ACHP 418 Cousin Walk, WNBA II, Home Depot

Episode Summary
Episode 418 of A Cigar Hustler's Podcast opens with hosts Mike Palmer, Michael Stepankevich and Boots riffing on "Green Wednesday" — the pre-Thanksgiving cannabis sales spike — and the double standard between how weed is now socially celebrated while cigar smokers are still stigmatized. That rolls into a broader economic conversation sparked by Home Depot's third consecutive earnings miss, with the crew arguing that Amazon and Temu are eating big-box market share while consumers pull back overall, and that the cigar industry serves as a leading indicator for discretionary spending. They also break down Project B, the proposed international women's basketball league offering multi-million-dollar salaries and equity, its Saudi-linked event partner Sela, and whether the WNBA's growing ratings can support a rival league.
The cigar news block starts with Guy Fieri's torn quad and emergency surgery mid-filming of his new show, then moves to the return of RoMa Craft Tobac's Intemperance BA XXI after roughly three years out of production — a Brazilian Arapiraca–wrapped blend that had been shelved because the factory couldn't source enough quality leaf. That leads into Boots recounting his recent trip to Estelí, where he went through "tobacco school" at Skip Martin's RoMa Craft operation with Carlos, learned the sorting and pilón process from Alex, and blended his own medium-to-full 5 1/2 x 52 Habano-wrapped robusto (20 made so far). Palmer explains why he avoids building blends around scarce leaf like Brazilian Arapiraca, contrasting it with his push for Pennsylvania broadleaf as a binder.
Next up: HVC's Hot Cake Fresh Out of the Oven Broadleaf adds a Figurado Box Press (6 1/2 x 52, Connecticut broadleaf over Nicaraguan binder and Estelí/Jalapa fillers) from Reinier Lorenzo's factory, which Boots got to smoke in Nicaragua — plus a detour into Pan Caliente and a bathroom mishap at the tobacco facility. The crew then covers Duran Cigars' return to the U.S. market with the Robert Duran Reserva, blended by Roberto Pelayo Duran and his son, using an Ecuadorian Habano Corojo wrapper, Indonesian Besuki binder and Nicaraguan fillers, in three regular-production sizes — and riffs on fathers working with sons in the business. The episode closes with a genuine highlight: Matt Booth naming the Powstanie Connecticut "Justice" he smoked on the Cigar Hustlers podcast as his notable smokable on How About That Cigar.

Nice. Bing bong. Bing bong. Okay.
He hasn't said bing bong in like two episodes. No, he said it yesterday. Oh, did he? Yeah.
You okay over there, Palmer? No, I think I had a stroke. You look stressed. I had a stroke earlier today.
He didn't take his vitamins. Now, today's first story. Pre-Thanksgiving strolls are firing up weed sales. The once stigmatized cousin walks have helped create Green Wednesday.
Are you guys familiar with cousin walks? I don't know. I don't even know what that is. You never heard that term before?
No. I'm going to go for a walk with my cousin. So, like, because you guys, the weed, you go out. "The tradition of sneaking off to blaze up with cousins before Thanksgiving dinner is losing its stigma and translating it into big money for the marijuana industry.
With recreational weed now legal in 24 states and medical use allowed in 40, there's less reason to hide that edible before the turkey comes out of the oven. " Oh, very fancy. It's the second biggest day for legal weed sales behind April 20th, AKA 420, per Cannabis Market Tracker BDSA. There's a cannabis tracker.
BDSA. Wow. Really. The firm says that overall the cannabis industry was worth more than $30 billion in US last year.
That's legal sales. Legal tender. More weed, less booze per Bloomberg. Bloomberg, the total value of the world's leading beer, wine, and spirit makers has dropped 830 million over the past four years, plus his attitudes change around weed and the adverse health effects of alcohol, walking the line, snack companies are also becoming more comfortable marketing to stoners.
Last year, Jif posted an ad to Instagram invoking the Cousin Walk, while a Taco Bell/Hidden Valley collaboration also referenced a similar stroll before Christmas dinner. Well, yeah, they actually have a pizza, new pizza place that just opened up in Deltona called Stoner's Joint. I saw that. The mayor was there cutting the ribbon.
Yeah. Really? Yeah. I thought there was a weed leaf on their logo.
It's a tomato. And then the green thing on top of the tomato is weed leaf shaped. Wow. It's basil.
It's just a big bay leaf. Right. Yeah. Meanwhile, the New York dispensary has an ad out now for pre-rolled joints for a It's a secret society that meets once a year.
Oh, a secret weed society? Yes, they meet once a year on Green Wednesday. And they get high. Yes.
Once a year. Wouldn't you do it Thursday? No. The actual day of Thanksgiving?
Wouldn't you want to do it day of? Yeah. Yeah, I mean, if they're talking about doing it so that you can deal with the awkward conversations, I'd want to do it the day of. Right.
Like right before dinner. Isn't it wild to think that this is socially acceptable at this point, but we are bastardized Thanks for smoking cigars. Yes, and we are terrible people. Isn't that crazy?
Yeah. Hey, I'm going to go sit on the patio on Thanksgiving and I'm going to smoke a cigar. Right. And I'm going to hang out with whoever else wants to smoke a cigar of me.
Right. And I'm looking forward to that. Tobacco Thursday. Tobacco.
It's Tobacco Thursday. Right? Right. And I'm going to be not impaired by many means, but I'm going to be relaxed.
I'm going to enjoy the conversation. Right. And that's going to be fantastic. I mean, are you going to go for a cousin walk on Wednesday?
No, I don't plan on it. You don't smoke a lot of weed? I don't smoke any weed. No?
I've had an edible or two in my life, but I've never smoked one. I can't inhale. Yeah? It's like paranoia for you, or what?
No, it burns. I mean... It burns? No.
I'm supposed to just cigars. I don't, you know, we don't inhale, so... It burns your lungs? It burns my lungs.
My fresh, virgin lungs. What about you, Booty? Cousin walk? I don't like my cousins.
Cousins. Big, big pothead. Booty's a big pothead. Booty's a big pothead?
Part of the syndicate. I mean, hey, listen, to eat their own. Whatever you do, whatever you want to do, whatever makes you happy. Sure, whatever makes you happy.
No judge here. I just don't want to be bastardized for the industry that... Right. Like, how is one okay, and one is, like, completely...
And you have to inhale. So, I mean, is it bad for your lungs, like regular cigarettes? I'm sure it is. You would think it would be.
You would think. Right. Yeah, smoking lung, probably not good. No.
Mm-hmm. Okay. I have no idea. So when was the last time you smoked weed, Boots?
Never wearing? You've never smoked weed? No. Not a single time in your life?
No. No edibles? No nothing? No.
Just heroin? Are you? No. No heroin either.
Are you lying right now? No. Is there like a reason? Do we need to edit this out?
Yeah. No, why? You've never smoked weed. I've seen the people you hang out with.
Your probation officer get mad if he finds out? I've seen the people you hang out with. I do not smoke. A lot of them partake.
No. I have one blocked on my phone of his friends because he always wants someone to go with him and that's why he would call you. Oh, for the cousin walk? Yes.
Who? I remember his face, not his name. Oh, okay. He was always looking for you to smoke weed?
That's what Chet said. Chet goes, if he calls you, this is what he wants. So I went, oh, well, he's got my number, I'll block him. He wants to smoke weed with you?
Yeah, there's, I mean, I grew up, you know, with a lot of people that did that, but I never did. You never smoked weed? No. Wow.
I've smelled it, like, because I used to do, use scent logics for the dogs. Right. In the Navy, but. Well, I mean, you can walk down the street and smell it.
You can sit in your backyard and smell it from one of the neighbors. Oh, dude, if you drive around in Orlando, downtown Orlando. Yeah, yeah. With the windows down, you can smell it.
Oh, yeah. Definitely during an Orlando City game. Friday night on I-4, you can smell it on I-4. For a magic game, or whatever.
Magic inside? Well, now they're going to have NFL, too. No, just as you're pulling up. Oh.
Now they're going to have smoking weed in the NFL? Well, NFL games are going to be down there. Oh, because of the Jaguars? Yeah.
Oh, did that happen? Are they moving to Orlando? Just, it's a temporary. It's for one year or something.
But it's 27. You know, the cool thing is that they're redoing Camping World to do it, so maybe this could be a trial run for an expansion. Yeah, but they're not doing much to the camping world. No?
They're just making it look fancy. Fresh coat of paint? Yeah, pretty much. New urinal cakes in bathrooms?
Yes, new urinal cakes. Okay, well, hey, enjoy your, what's it, wacky Wednesday? Enjoy your cousin? Green Wednesday.
Green Wednesday. Enjoy your green Wednesday for all of you that partake. Because I will not judge you for doing these things. Yeah, so stop judging us.
And I hope that you start to understand what is so cool about this. Oh. California. California.
Oh no, we're not smoking flavored stuff. Bullshit. Alright, Home Depot isn't doing so hot. The company missed earning expectations for the third quarter in a row due to a persisting renovation rut.
Mmm. The roof is leaking and the walls are starting to smell like mold at the Disney World for dads. Home Depot released Q3 earnings yesterday that showed sales stagnant, which attributed to high interest rates, shaky consumer confidence, And fewer than usual fall storms that thwarted and anticipated rebound and renovations. The lackluster report marked the third consecutive quarter of missed earnings expectations.
The retailer's stock closed down 6% last week. S. 4 analysts expected. Yeah, I have noted, I mean, I frequent Home Depot all the time, but I have noticed that there is a low amount of people in there now, but you know, the thing is, is that you can buy, you know, say somebody wants to go build a fireplace, or you know, whatever, right, they get two by fours to build these things, you can buy that shit on Amazon now, pre-done, or Timu, or, you know, whatever, you know, and it's cheaper than what you're, that if you built it yourself?
Yeah. Can you order a deck on Timu? Yeah. You can order everything.
Really? Dude, you can order a car on Timo. I have seen the cars, but the unboxing is a little concerning because it's not really a car. Or like, you know, you may not know this, but even Home Depot, they sell homes.
Yeah, kits, don't they? They sell like a kit? Yep, Amazon sells them, Timo sells them. I mean, they sell everything, but the difference is Amazon and Timo have it 30% less Because, you know, big box stores like Home Depot market up 30 percent.
They got overhead. So do you think that the buyer still exists or the people are spending less? I think the buyer still exists. I think they're just going elsewhere because I don't think Home Depot is evolving and moving their prices where the market's at.
Okay. And do you think the buyer still exists or do you think consumers are spending less? I'm not in that industry anymore. I don't know.
I know, but I just want to hear your opinion. I know that you're not an analyst. I've noticed when my few trips to Home Depot for odds and ends that there are less people. Well, we've already established that.
But the question was, do you think that the buyer still exists or are they- Are home sales up or down at the moment? I have no idea. You would think they would renovate instead of buying a new home because it would be cheaper. Right.
But then if, like he said, they're getting the parts and pieces in other places, so there's got to be a market for it if Timu and Amazon is selling the stuff. I mean, Palmer, you go to Home Depot like you just said, right? What do you go for, like your odds and ends? I got an ant killer last time I went.
Yeah, I mean, that's something you would probably go for there for. But, like, if you want to get a power cord for your house or something, where do you buy it? The tool place up on... Harbor Freight.
Harbor Freight, yeah. I go to Home Depot. Do you? For everything?
I just go for odds and ends. Like, if I need one piece of lumber or something, I don't, I'm not a... Yeah, I go to Home Depot for a lot of stuff. Yeah.
We put a big shade cloth in the backyard. We bought the shade cloth on Amazon, but not the poles. Yeah, I mean, but I could tell you that I honestly think that people are pulling back, man. I think that, you know, the economy isn't great.
And, you know, what's really kind of funny is I think the cigar industry is a leading indicator for that. Because this is an item that people don't necessarily need to consume. That's a luxury. Yeah, and they usually have more of it.
And we've been experiencing erratic buying. Things have been all over the place this entire year. I mean, the work and effort that we put in to sustain numbers or to try and grow has been 10x. Now, like, that's been kind of natural for us just because of our overall drive and our aspect of things.
But when you look back, you think, okay, if I had figured these things out and added these things five years ago, what would the numbers have been like then? They would have been, you know, I would assume at least two or three times what they were. And now they're implementing all those things. It just makes it okay.
You know what I mean? So I think that a lot of people, I think that people are feeling it, man. I think other people aren't spending as much as they were in the past. I just think that it's just not out there right now.
There's a guy on my street that's been putting a deck on the side of his house ever since I moved in in April, and he's still not done. Because it cost, or because he's lazy? I don't know him personally, so I don't know, but it's just random occurrences. You'll hear hammers going that he's doing something.
Right. Maybe that's when he's smoking a cigar. Could be. I mean, it feels like from the, you know, the randomness of the thing, like he goes and buys a handful of stuff and then does another section, and then, you know, so it could be a cost issue.
Right, when he has extra cash. Right. Yeah, I think, honestly, I think that's what's kind of going on, man. Granted, you know, I will give you Timu and Amazon, all these things, they're definitely taking a piece of the pie.
I don't know how big that pie is, though, because I don't consider me, like, I don't think, oh, I need to buy my wood from Amazon, or what, you know, like, I just want to go up the street, get, I got to make my three trips for Home Depot for that day, for whatever I'm working on. Every project is, I say two and a half trips, but yeah. Right, you got to go, you got to buy the first set, and then you got to realize that you screwed up and you got the wrong number, you got to go back and get the second set. Right.
And then you got to go do it again and you realize that you forgot specific materials to finish the job. The half trip is when I go and return something I bought on the second trip because I bought too much. I don't need this anymore. Oh, I bought too many.
Yeah. Which you would probably have to compare with this story though, is you probably have to compare Lowe's numbers, Because sometimes, each year, what happens is, in different quarters is, your numbers go up and down based upon those two big box stores. Right. Well, they're targeted to different customers.
Lowe's is more female-friendly, the stores are cleaner, they're nicer, they're set up different, where Home Depot is more the contractor guy store. Is it? I'm a Home Depot guy. I prefer Home Depot too.
It's an easier setup, and I'm just more familiar with it. Right. Okay. Okay.
But I don't know, I couldn't buy stuff at Timu and Amazon, because if you're doing a project, you don't want to wait another three days. Yeah, I wanna go get it. Yeah. " Right, I'm not doing that.
No, I'm gonna pick up the boards. I'm gonna pick up the boards, I'm gonna scratch my car, bang things up in the process, but it's getting done that day. Right, yeah. Exactly.
Okay. Yeah, 'cause I shopped Aunt Killer on Amazon. Did you? " Right.
And I'm into a new week. But it was cheaper. It was cheaper. Yeah, it was a couple dollars cheaper.
There's some of these people that are just like shopaholics, though, with those type of things, right? Yeah. Like, Amazon, like, they just have to buy 10 items today. Mm-hmm.
You know, and they know the Amazon guy that comes all the time. They have milk and cookies with them or whatever. You know, it's just a thing. Okay, but what's weird is that, like, what's going on as far as the economy is being reported is that people aren't hiring.
No. You can't find a job. Right. right now so that tells you that something's up because if you need the help you hire the person you don't say well i'm gonna wait and see how this works out how all this shakes out yeah so i'm telling you i you know hopefully this is the tail end of it because i think that this is something that we've experienced throughout the entire year and now you're kind of seeing Let's make it ripple into some of these other industries, but yeah, something there's some fuckery about.
Something is afoot. Hopefully we all get our checks soon and the economy gets flushed. That solves every problem. You just get your money early is all it is, isn't it?
I mean, when they get that stuff out, it's just what you would get back in your taxes? Is that what they're doing? Yeah, because it shows up on your taxes. Well, you have to pay taxes on it.
I don't even know what's going on. I don't even know what's going on. Well, no, but like if you're going to get $500 back in your return and they have already given you $500, you get nothing. Okay, so to bring you up to speed.
Supposedly, there's supposed to be a $2,000 check that is to be returned to all Americans who are not making a lot every year. There was not a specific amount on that based off of the tariffs. Oh. Did you see that on Facebook or something?
No, no, that was on the news. Okay, that stuff usually ends up being faked, all the stories lately. Yeah, I don't buy that for a second. I don't either.
It was on the news. And I got news for you. 2K doesn't solve a single one of my problems. Yeah, right.
Not a single one. Oh, 2000, yeah. Yeah. It doesn't?
Yeah, no, it doesn't. It's not enough. I'm not buying a jet ski with it. No.
I'm not buying a jet ski, right? Not even the trailer. All right, now moving to sports, a proposed new International Women's Basketball League, currently called Project B, promises players multi-million-dollar salaries in league equity. And more betting for the money makers.
Oh. It's set to tip off next fall. Fall goes according to plan. It could upend the sports and the B.
And the B. And the B. Yeah, it most likely stands for basketball. Founded by tech mogul Jeff Prentice, co-founder of Skype and Gray Burnett, former Facebook executive of the 5-on-5 Pro League, will play seven two-week tournaments across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
The Founders believe Project B is capable of delivering tech-like returns. Earlier this year, Project B set out to raise $5 billion, according to Bloomberg. 1 maximum salary cap under negotiations with the WNBA. Oh, much better pay over there.
Are the Saudis getting involved with the Saudi money? Because they usually buy everything. Yeah, I mean, that would be smart for that league. Are they running up against, this is like the league thing for golf?
Running up to female basketball players? Project B signed its first four players this month, former WNBA MVP, Nanika Ogwomike. Oh yes, please go. Ogwomike, their last name is M-I-K-A, O-G-W-U-M-I-K-A.
Ogwomike. Ogwomike. Okay. Phoenix, Mercury, Ford, Alyssa Thomas, New York, Liberty, Power Forward, Junquale Jones, and Las Vegas, This is guard Jewel Lloyd.
On Friday, Project B announced its first international acquisition, Camila Cardoso of Brazil, Janelle Salamoum of France, and Li Ming of China. All got equity-laden deals, according to Sports Business Journal. Some observers have raised concerns about the league partnering with Sela, an entertainment company that's a subsidiary of the Saudi Royal Family Sovereign Wealth Fund. There it is.
I knew it. The public, Burnett told Front Office Sports, Sella is one event partner that we pay money to. We do not have any dollars coming from them. It's a wholly owned subsidiary based in London that has done tons of events globally.
Women's basketball is exploding. The only option for elite athletes in the sport used to be playing in the WNBA during the summer, and then heading to the EuroLeague in the off season, but now opportunities are raising the stakes. Athletes Unlimited, a four-week playoff intensity competition, held in Nashville each winter, debuted in 2022, and unrivaled a three-on-three professional league founded by NBA stars. Oh, that's all these names.
Yeah, go ahead. Now, Preece Collier and Brianna Stewart ran its inaugural season from January to March this year, but don't count the old guard out. 2 billion media rights deal in 2024. Okay.
So, Boots, do you think that this is, this league is going to work? I mean, yeah. Yeah? I think if they pump enough money into women's basketball, I think you can do things with it.
Really? I think the biggest issue with women's basketball is there's just no money. You know, nobody wants to invest. You know, Tom Brady was trying, right, by using his stardom, right?
And, Also partnering with a gentleman from the Raiders, Mark, whatever his last name is. Davis? Yeah, Mark Davis, which they won, right? They won the championship by pumping money in and getting certain players to come based off of them.
Okay. The Saudis have way more money than these guys. They just said they're not really involved. Yeah, bullshit.
Yeah, why would they pay them money? Bullshit. The Saudis are going to be involved. Okay.
Just like, I mean, why wouldn't they? They've been buying everything. Okay. So I think if you pump enough money into it, yeah.
They will come. Do you think this is going to be a big sports guy, but it seems reasonable. It does? Sure.
Why not? Why? WNBA is very popular right now. Why not spin off another one?
Hmm. It is more popular than it's ever been. Right. Okay.
Okay. I don't think that's saying much though. Well, I I mean, yeah. Yeah.
If you put it on a scale, it's gone up two points. I'm going to look up what the more popular doesn't really mean a whole lot. WNBA ratings. I mean, I will say, you know, what's the girl's name?
Kaelin Clark? Kaelin Clark's jersey sales were up top with some of the top NBA guys. Right? That was a big thing.
Other than that. Are they pretty colors, like pinks and purples and stuff? No. They're funny.
They're not Barbie colors. They're not Barbie colors? Don't get the Barbie AI, it tells you to do bad things. All of her, so she was on the Indiana Fever, all their games were sold out, even though she was hurt and wasn't playing.
Now, will it happen again this year? Coming up? Probably not, because she did get injured and that's not good for sales, right? Like, everybody bought all these tickets in advance, and then all of a sudden, now she's not playing, and that's the only reason why you're buying the tickets.
Oh. Okay. I like the blonde that fights. Oh.
Yeah. Sidekick or whatever it is. That's Trailer Barbie. I'll forget her name.
Trailer Barbie. Yeah. Trailer. No, she grew up in a trailer park.
Trailer. Oh. She's a brawler. Yeah.
Oh, you knock Galen Clark down? Kick in the head. Yeah. Okay.
Okay, so... What'd you find, Michael? 56 million. The WNBA was 794,000.
53 million, down from the year prior, and the WNBA is up 969,000. Oh, so closer. So, you know, is there potential for something like that? I guess, but I don't know.
I don't think that it's there yet. I don't think that it's even close. I think the WNBA has to continue to do things to continue to grow ratings and, you know, before it's even be sustainable. I hope it becomes sustainable, but I don't think it's there yet.
Has there ever been a second football league that has ever sustained itself? I mean, you hear about all of them that happened, but they usually end up... No, like they've merged, XFL merged with the FFL or whatever, and now they're coming back to Orlando. Um, you know, look, I think they just need to lower the hoop.
I think if you lower the hoop a foot. Yeah, for the girls. Yeah. So they can dunk.
Yeah. You need that. You need dunking. You need some type of energy, some kind of fancy, you know, what's it called when you toss the ball up and they Alley Oop.
Alley Oop. Jumbo. Alley Oop. Yeah, you need something.
Maybe if they wore nicer clothes. No, I don't want you to go that direction. They have a league like that, first of all. Do they?
Oh, do they? Yeah, it's called the LFL. Oh, the football league, the ladies in the laundry. Oh, the laundry.
Is that still alive? That's got to be. That's still alive. How do you know that?
Because it's all over the internet. Did you watch it? Of course. Moneymakers, Michael, they bet on everything.
Yeah, we bet on those. Yeah, you bet on LFL. No, I don't even know one of those girls' names. I don't think anybody knows one of those girls names.
Well, there's Big Boob in the brown shirt. There's Tight Ass in the green. It took her for 200 yards rushing. Did they play in a whole field?
I always thought it was a smaller stadium. It's like Arena Football League. Ah, I gotcha. A lot of turf burns in that league.
No, I mean, I don't know. I don't know. This sounds like a lot. A lot of money in this thing.
I think there's more potential for you to buy a WNBA team and kind of invest in that and help that grow and develop than trying to build something else at this point. I don't think it's there yet. I don't think that they're ready for that. Ice Cube was trying to do a thing with 3v3.
Yeah, 3v3 league. Yeah. Three on three? Well, it's big with the guys.
No, no, no. I mean, their rules are a little bit changed, but not much. Do they play inside or outside? Inside.
But it's, you know, it's ex-players, right, ex-NBA players and stuff like that. I saw the story, we covered the story, I think, about him trying to get a team. Yeah, I feel like that's sustaining. Yeah, they got a guy in there, Coutinho Mobley, he's been out of the league for 20 years.
Yeah? Yeah, and he's still playing with them, so he's got to be in his 50s. Oh, on the over for 20 points? No, no, they don't let you bet on the, uh...
On a 3v3? On Hard Rock on 3v3. All right, we got a video, Michael? I do.
So. Is there music? I don't think so. So.
Anybody watch the game last night? Other than myself? Was there a game on last night? Absolutely not.
No? That fucking game started out so trashy. With three interceptions? Yeah.
Three, San Francisco 49ers, Brock Purdy threw three picks, they still won the game. Yeah. They still won the game. But there was a situation with your boy, who you like to call Juan Jennings.
Oh, Juan. Juan was involved. Yes. Oh, Juan.
However, it's Jawan, but Juan Jennings, watch this video. Oh, was that him that punched? No, he got punched. He got punched.
You got punched in the nuts. Punched in the nuts there. In the no-no square. Oh.
Yeah. Did you hear about that? No, but that's funny. Dude, that's so crazy.
I mean, it's obvious. It's not like he, you know, didn't plan to do it. That was extremely blatant. Right.
Can't believe your name's not Juan, I'm punting you. How did they get it? Yeah, and then they got it on camera? Yeah.
That's awesome. Isn't that insane? It's my favorite new video. It's your favorite new video?
Yeah. Boom. So. So.
Well, at least he was upper. He didn't go for the. Dude, that was a whole nut. That was.
No, that was no good. Oh, you think he punched him in the fupa? Yeah. He punched him in the fupa.
Don't they wear cups? No. No? It's not a thing anymore?
I don't think you have to. I don't think it's required. Well, if I was him, I would now. You know, it would still hurt.
Yeah. Well, yeah, but not as bad. Yeah. So then, you know, they get off the field, 'cause that was like the last play of the game, I think, and then everybody's going around congratulating, and then Jawan Jennings decks this guy in the face when he's got a lid on.
Oh, did he really? Yeah, he's got a lid on, yeah. Nice. Don't you think that that's justifiable?
Yeah. Yeah, but I don't think it's how the rules work, though. I mean, this guy blatantly hit him in the nuts. I mean, yeah, it's definitely not in the NFL rules where you're like, hey, if you get socked in the dick, bro, you can go punch him afterwards.
Was there a penalty call? The game was over and nobody saw that at the first time, but the NFL is definitely gonna find this guy. Yeah. Oh, so that was at the end of the game where he punched him in the wiener.
Oh. Yeah. Yeah. So, did you take Juan Jennings getting punched in the nuts through the money makers?
No. There wasn't, I don't know what those kind of bets are coming from. What was your bet last night? Duncan Robinson, ten and a half.
Did he? Did he? Nope. You didn't make money?
Nine. So it was an L? So let me tell you about that. I'm glad that you brought it up.
Yeah, yeah. He went two for eight for field goals, and he went one for seven from three point. Do you think he did it on purpose? He is normally a 40% shooter.
Do you think he did it on purpose? I don't know, man. You know, maybe. He took a dive type thing?
Yeah. Oh. Maybe. He was the most bet on prop.
Prop. Prop bet. That's what I'm thinking of. Yeah.
So there wasn't a prop bet that Quine. Makes you wonder. It punched in a wiener? No prop bet for that?
No, I already asked that. And you couldn't bet less than nine. So if you bet nine, it canceled out. Like, you still didn't win any money.
But you could have took the under at ten and a half. You could have took the under in one. Yeah. Which, you would be crazy to do that.
That's how that works. That's why I worry about your moneymaker gambling, because the bets have to not make sense in order for you to make money. Uh, sometimes, yeah. I like to bet, normally, I bet on nobodies.
Right. Because they're not getting a phone call. Right. They're not looked at.
Um, but yeah. Jawan Jennings punched in the nuts, and so did Boots. Cigars for Podcast does not endorse betting by any means. If you have a problem betting, please call, what's that number?
888-ADMIT-IT. 888-ADMIT-IT. Yes. Hopefully one day Boots will call.
Oh. Okay. All right, let's light up some cigar news. Hey.
Guy Fieri was rushed to emergency surgery after missing a set of steps and tearing his quad muscle in half. This is after the video in the plane? Yes, this happened yesterday. Oh my God.
During an interview with Fox News Digital, the Food Network star explained that he is currently in a wheelchair and using crutches. But still smoking cigars. Yes, slipped down a set of steps, and one foot went forward, and the other foot got caught on the threshold. So, you know, it extended me out.
I looked like I was probably doing the splits, but when my right leg compressed into itself, the giveaway point, and the doctor said it's never been, you know, in 20 years. He hasn't seen a tear this big. It's the biggest tear. It's the biggest tear.
It's a big tear. Beautiful tear. Beautiful tear. It's the thickest part of your quad in half.
Yeah, it sucked, Fieri said. Oh, sorry. Fieri. Fieri.
Fieri. I don't want to get a phone call. He explained that he was rushed to surgery after the fall to ensure his muscles didn't recede. I got a phone call this morning.
From Guy Fieri? No. From Jack Tarana. What did he, what did we do wrong now?
Oh, we were talking about the mic thing. The what thing? Him being mic'd, not being mic'd up. Oh, yeah, yeah.
Yeah. What was he, this is a story we covered yesterday. What was the reason he wasn't mic'd? He was upset about the fact that we addressed it.
Everybody loved the video when we're negative. Oh. Well, we like the We're terrible for the industry. We just want things to be better.
Just trying to make everybody better. Yeah, we didn't say it was a bad video. Yeah. We just critiqued the video.
It was a critique. It's a beautiful video. It was a great video. It has three guys who do videos daily.
Yeah, we loved the clanking in the background. We thought that was epic. Yeah, that was nice. We do not have clanking in the background.
No. Minimal clanking. Yeah, minimal. The occasional phone call.
Sometimes. You normally tear that muscle at your tendon or the tendon tears off the bone, the bone but this was right in the center of the whole quad muscle and it exploded that's kind of the chef explained that he was in the middle of filming his new show flavor town food fight when the fall and surgery the fall and surgery happened the surgery at the same time apparently he fell and they were working on him right there right away on the ground right away so right in the middle of filming then we've got everybody in town and all the chefs there and 125 people on I said, and everybody's ready to go, and I'm in surgery. Oh. So, we figured out how to pivot through it and to have some creative filming techniques, but it's been a run, and now I'm up here at the ranch where it's always about hiking and outdoors and, you know, beautiful.
I don't think he's hiking. He's not moving. He's not moving. Is he hiking with Mickey Pegg?
The guy's gotta be... Yeah, right? Oh, he made a comment on Skip's Facebook the other day. Yeah.
Oh, he's alive. He asked if anybody wanted to go hiking is actually what he did. Did he really? Yes.
He has a hiking cigar group now. He's in a cigar group now. Right. He wanted to go on a smoking, hiking, herf thing.
How are we not covering this on the cigars? It was just one random comment. Explain that his injury has been a damper. Yeah, no kidding.
The area is in for a long recovery. After eight weeks of no weight on his leg, he will have to go into a cast and then rehab his quad. This is perfect for us. He cannot come do an interview.
Well, we can't get here. We'd have to Zoom call him. The guy still has to do Triple D and all these other things, so you think you're going to tell me he's going to do this in a wheelchair with a cast with his legs straight out? No, that's why he can come do our interview.
He can't put any weight on it, so I think he's bedridden for eight weeks. There's no way. And then you get the cast. There's no way that Guy Fieri does not go out.
Well, they'll have a... Oh, he's going to have his look-alike. Yeah, they'll have a look-alike. A doppelganger?
Yeah. T-Mu guy? T-Mu guy. It's great for a team move.
Maybe they have Jack do it. Hi, I'm Guy Fury. Hi, I'm Guy Fury. Man, if he would spike his hair, he's just a little taller.
Yeah, he can make it work. Sure, he can do it. I'd be convinced. I would.
I'd love to see that. Okay, so I think that realistically, he's not gonna be down for long. Like, he figures it out. He's gotta be off his feet for eight weeks.
There's no way. There's no way. You don't think there's a clause in his contract, but if he gets injured, there's gotta be something. No way.
That guy still shows up to work. I don't think there's a clause either. Do you know who the guy is? I know he is.
The guy works his ass off. Yes, he works his ass off. But he wants to be able to walk again. Yeah, he'll figure it out.
I'm willing to bet. Maybe Jack carries him. Yeah. See, now you're talking.
Yeah. Be like Master Blaster. You know, he gets on Jack's back. Right.
Master Blaster runs Flavortown. Right. Who run Flavortown? Who run Flavortown?
Master Blaster. Master Blaster runs Flavortown. Guy Fieri run Flavortown. Guy Fieri.
Maybe he does a show from inside his home. Oh, yeah. Cooking with Guy. Cooking with Guy in the wheelchair.
Definitely getting a phone call. We're getting a phone call, just so you know. We're getting a phone call. Definitely getting a phone call on this one.
Okay. All right. So, moving on. Next article.
Roma Craft Intemperance BA-21 returns the show. Yes. For the first time in three years, Roma Craft Tobac is shipping its Intemperance BA-21, Introduced in 2012 as one of the first two Intemperance blends, the BA-21, is it 21 or XXI? How do they want it said?
I think it's 21. 21? Right. You can say XXI, I think that's funny.
It's not supposed to be a limited production line. However, Romo Craft Tobac has issues finding enough Brazilian Adaparaca? Adaparaca. Adaparaca?
Adaparaca. That meets its standards, so the line has been out of production for a few years. Blend-wise, underneath that, Ataparaca Wrapper, is a Nicaraguan binder and fillers from Nicaragua and at least one other undisclosed country. Boots, what's the undisclosed country?
Yeah, you were there. You were just there. Um, probably, I don't know. Hey, how'd that go, by the way?
The what? The trip? Yeah, you never talked about it. Oh, we'll talk about it.
Let's talk about it. Well, he's asking you now. Oh, you want to talk about it now? Yeah.
Oh, it was great. Yeah, it was a great trip. Okay, good job. You recently went to Esteli.
Yes. You went to the Roma factory. I did. And you hung out with Skip.
Yes. And Carlos was there as well. Yes. I love Carlos.
And what else happened? We went through tobacco school. Yeah. That was like a two, two and a half day ordeal.
Okay. He showed us absolutely everything with the tobacco from when they receive it. Alex was trying to, because we didn't get to go to like a farm or anything like that, personally, but he was trying to tell us how he would buy the tobacco and what he was looking for and stuff, and then we got to see it in the pallones, we got to see him flip all the pallones, we got to see the sorting processes, which is amazing how they sort it, we got to see the difference of when it's in the pallone on how the leaves should look with all the blending of the veins and everything. Did you work on a blend?
Yeah. You did? Yep. Okay.
What'd you make? I made a medium to full. Okay. You made a medium to full?
Yeah. What was the wrapper? The wrapper is... You're catching me off guard right now.
I know. I mean, this is a pretty simple question. It was a Habano wrapper. It was a Habano wrapper?
Yeah. Okay. What was the size? It was a five and a half by 52.
Okay. So like a Robusto? A Robusto. Okay.
All right, are you, are you, how many did you make? Um, well, right now I just made the 20. Yeah, okay. Yeah, to see, cause we didn't, we only got to smoke, uh, a couple of them while we were, uh, sitting there the next day.
How many more are you gonna make? Uh, not sure yet. No? No.
No idea? Uh, me and Skip had talked about some different things, but no, nothing yet. No? Okay.
All right. This was your opportunity. I was trying to, I was helping you bring it out. You didn't want to bring it out.
Yeah, no, I, it's something that I would like to do. It was, it was super interesting, you know, smelling all the different tobaccos and stuff and the stuff that really goes into making a cigar, it is kind of crazy, the price of a cigar. But, you know, I mean, Carlos is making one as well. Skip loved them.
They were good. So we'll see. He said something about like a Kraft Marquette at some point. Yeah.
We'll see. Okay. Very nice. Moving on.
Yeah, so the Brazilian out of Padaca is finally out again. Shippings from its Nicosuena factory, its Austin headquarters, includes six different Vitolas, one of which is new. Who is it? Have you smoked this, Palmer?
Do you remember smoking it? I don't remember. I don't know. I think at one time I've smoked everything they've made, so.
Yeah, I mean, fortunate. For us, that they found good Brazilian Araparaca to produce these cigars, because they haven't been in production for a long time. Do you use any of that leaf? The BA?
No. No? Uh-uh. No, I remember it was here a long time ago.
Yeah, but you got to remember also, you know, if something is very scarce, I'm not leaning towards that. I'm not going to say, hey, I really... Yeah, just longevity. Yeah, well, not only that, but I also want to help with what's good for the factory, right?
Right. Unless I have a particular leaf that I think, hey, this would be really good, and we should go out and kind of, like, can we find this? Like, with the Pennsylvania Broadleaf, I loved it, and I wanted to do a binder for it, and that wasn't something that they had readily available at that time. So, yeah, no, you know, if there's something that's scary, then who am I?
You know, I'm not helping the factory at all at that point. If anything, I'm putting a hindrance on things. Okay. Because now not only are you focusing on your own factory, your own operations, I'm going to swoop in there and then make things even more complicated as far as finding other stuff, right?
Right. Especially something that's that scarce, right? Now, if I wanted a San Andreas and they didn't have it, okay, maybe. If I need a Habano, obviously Sumatra, you know.
But, like, those are all common things that they have available in that factory, so. Right. Okay. Okay.
All right, HVC hot cake, fresh out of the oven, The Broadleaf, Figurado, Box Press, shipping next week. Oh, yeah, me and Carlos, we got to smoke this. Did you? Yeah, we saw, uh, uh, Rainier, right?
Yeah. Yeah, we saw him at, uh, the Oliva, where they get all the tobacco in. Yeah? I forgot what it was called.
Pre-Industry? Yeah, it was called, like, uh, Puro or something. Okay. Nicopiro.
Yeah, it was, it's, uh, yes. Nicopiro, Nicoprosa. Nicoprosa. Oh, that was a funny story with that place.
It's actually not called that, by the way, anymore, but. So funny stories, like, so the bathroom thing that's over there, right? They don't have toilet paper in the bathrooms, right? Well, at Skip's Place, it's there, right?
So it's a normal bathroom. So I went there, and I was talking to Rainier, and I was like, man, I really gotta go to the bathroom. Hold on, I'll be right back. I go to the bathroom, and we're, and Carlos is sitting there talking to him, and I go inside, and there's a lady, right?
So I thought I was in the wrong bathroom, 'cause there's a lady in there. And she's like speaking Spanish to me, and she's like throwing things at me, like take the, you know, like I was, I'm like, you know what, I'm just gonna hold it, I'm just gonna, you know, leave, I'm good. You didn't know what she was saying? No, yeah, I was like, I'm good.
I was like, is this a women's bathroom? Quidado. So I left. Quidado.
Quidado. The one Spanish word he knows with the bathroom. Yeah, that was, yeah. So you freaked out and you left.
Yeah, Carlos is like, hey, you didn't go to the bathroom? I was like, "Nah, I'm good, bro. " There's some lady in there. Freak me out.
I'll wait till I go get back to Skips. Like a Seinfeld episode. Right. What all was she throwing at you?
Like mints? And was it like the bathroom attendant? No, they have like toilet paper. Like they give you like a square and...
A square. A square? A square, yeah. Ugh.
Yeah, look here and say, mas. Yeah. Mas papel. Oh, good.
I didn't want no part. Mucho. Mucho square. Mucho squareo.
Mucho Esquero, por favor. Zepato. Zepato. Zepato.
Shoe? Just running out words now. All right. You know what?
I don't need the toilet paper. Do you have a shoe? I want to shit in the shoe. Really would like to...
Can I borrow your shoe? Right. Very nice. Zepato.
Okay. Bueno Zepato. She starts taking off her shoe and you taking it to the bathroom. You give her two $1 bills, American money, she'd probably give you the shoe.
the show oh it might give you more than that easy oh god that's not nice i don't know i wasn't there next week's hvc's hot cake fresh out of the oven broadleaf will line will be getting its third new vitola for 2025 the company has announced that it's ready to release the hot cake fresh out of the oven broadleaf figurado box press a box press six and a half by 52 vitola that the rest of the line uses a connecticut broadleaf wrapper over in nicaraguan binder and fillers from sdly and Jalapa regions of Nicaragua. The line is made at the company's Fabrica de Tobacco's HVCSA de Renier Lorenzo's factory in Nicaragua. Each cigar is an MSRP of Figueroa. Hmm.
This price has been a little bit higher lately. I'm going to say $16. Yeah, I was about right there. $15.
40. Oh, that's not bad. Out of the oven, Broadleaf debuted Two Vitolas, two more were added in February, fresh out of the oven, Broadleaf is part of the company's Pan Caliente family of lines. Oh, I like Pan Caliente.
Bello is fresh out of the oven, fresh out of the oven, Bello, Bello, Bello, Bello, Bello, Bello. Okay, so you've had the cigar, what'd you think of it? I thought it was good. Yeah?
Yeah. Would you buy more of it? Yeah, I thought it was very smooth. It had a little bit of power, not, you know, his stuff that's not super strong, like Skip stuff, but it was good.
I like it. Yeah, I like it. Okay. Are you interested?
Are you excited about Fresh Out of the Oven? Do you want to try that? I'll try anything. I like the Pan Caliente, so maybe it's from that line.
Sure. I think that was the first one Palmer ever turned me on to on HVC. Yeah, the Pan Caliente? Yeah.
That's my favorite from his line. Yeah. Okay. Like the Black Friday ones?
I've never liked any of those. Yeah. It's been a weird run. They were popular first and then they were kind of tapered off.
Right. All right. Duran Cigars releases a Duran Cigar. Jack Toronto's old stomping ground.
Yes, they're back. Duran Cigars. They're back. Jack, maybe they want to hire you.
Uh-oh. S. market after a several-year hiatus to focus on its growth in other countries, as well as its farming operations, has announced the launch of a new cigar blended by the father and son combination of Robert Pileo Duran and Robert Pileo Duran Jr. Oh, Duran Duran.
Duran Duran. The new line is called the Robert Duran Reserva, with the company saying it represents an elevated evolution of the brand's blending philosophy. The new cigar is called Come Undone. Duran Duran.
Duran Duran. 's modern palate and fresh perspective. Ooh, modern. So the best of both worlds.
Oh yeah, so old school, new school. Yeah, I get it. Oh, that's right. It's happening.
Younger Duran serves as the company's marketing and sales manager. The blend features an Ecuador and Habano Corojo over the 2024 harvest of Finca's Azan. Finca's Azan. Underneath that is an Indonesian besuki binder and filler that contains three-year-age viso and secco grown in Nicaragua, in the Nicaragua's Jalapa region, along with tobacco from the country's Esteli region.
The company calls the blend a medium-plus flavor-forward experience with progressive development throughout the smoke. It's from Junior. It's the marketing guy. It's the marketing guy.
Sounds like it. Adding that the cigar is notes of cedar, sweetness, cocoa, and coffee. It is produced at the company's Nika Tobacco Essay Factory in Nicaragua and offered in three sizes, which are all regular production offerings. There's a Big Robusto, a Toro, a Double Corona, these tobaccos represent some of the finest we've produced in recent years, said Robert Pellejo, Duran, founder and CEO of Duran Cigars.
This is the finest tobacco we have ever come across in our lives. Working on this blend with my son has been one of the most meaningful moments of my career. The Reserva shows who we are, our past, our present, our future of Duran Cigars. I mean, that's gotta be pretty cool.
Yeah, to work with your son? Yeah. So, you know, would you want to work with your son Boots? Yeah.
Yeah? If he'd call me. How old is he now? 18.
He'll be 19 here real soon. Yeah, he's got it all under control. I had a falling out with my son when he was at age two, the older one. Yeah.
I think they know everything. The golden child? Jake? Yeah.
He's not really the golden child. No? No. The other one is?
Connor? Yeah. Connor's good. I could see that now.
I could see that now. Connor calls you every day. Oh yeah, he calls every day. All the time?
At least once. Yeah. Is he still working at UPS? No.
No, he's working at a pool company. He doesn't clean anymore now. He puts in the pumps and stuff. There you go.
Nice. Okay. Well, as far as Duran, there's not really much to say about that. I mean, welcome back to the industry.
I like their music. Yeah. I got news for you. We're oversaturated.
So this just in. Good luck with that. We hope it works out for you. Wish you the best.
And it sounds like you have a finger on the pulse with the marketing department, so. Yeah. But all joking aside, it's cool to see a father and son working together. Right.
Nice. You and Jack's going to make a cigar together when he gets older? I don't think Jack's is the one that's compelled to really work with me. Doesn't want to pick up the helm of the company?
I think that if there's going to be anybody that's going to work with me, it'll be Justice. Justice will want to work with me. But who knows, man? I mean.
Maybe Teddy. We're still a few years away from screw you, dad. That's got to turn the corner eventually. You didn't.
I showed up to every game. What's he going to complain you didn't do? I coached. Oh, believe me, dude.
I'll tell you what. It's remarkable. You can't tell me that you can do a million things for your kid And your kid will still remember the one thing that you screwed up. Oh, sure, yeah.
Can't believe you didn't give me the... " Yeah, no shit. Like, "Okay, are you kidding me? She missed that one play?
And this is what we're doing? But she just looked the other way? I don't know. It's happened in an instant.
Yeah, exactly. And you know, what's funny is there are some parents that want to sit and socialize on the sidelines. Sure. That's not Brittany.
She is in it. She is watching the games. She's cheering you on. She's cheering on the friends in the team, like the whole thing.
She could have sneezed or swallowed a bug or something. Yeah, exactly. And shoot, I didn't even see. Or she had to, maybe she wasn't there that one time for something.
She had to go to the bathroom. She misses, she misses, or she makes 98% of the games, you know what I mean? And if she misses one, she's distraught about it, so. He remembers that one.
But those kids remember, kids remember that shit, you know? It's wild. Whatever. So I would, I would guess, if you were to ask me who would want to work with me and do something, I think it would be him.
I think Teddy's more of, Brittany's kind of like bestie. They're tight. They're tight as of late. Okay.
All right, but that's it. That's all you have for today? That's all we got. Do you have a listener of the week?
No, we can't do that daily. Do you have a listener of the day? That's just for the Monday show. Otherwise, we're just going to start, just pick a name.
Okay. Well, I can end with one other thing. All right, go ahead. Yeah, let's hear it.
And I'll send you the clip so you can throw it in there. But, uh, I watched How About That Cigar last night. Oh. Oh, who was on last night?
Matt Booth was on last night. Matt Booth was on. I saw the thing, but I didn't watch it. Yeah.
And at the end of the show, they always do Notable Smokables. Right. And my guy, Matt Booth, said, "You know what? " Oh, nice.
And that cigar was amazing. So I'll get the clip so you can add it. So that was incredible, man. That was a great feeling, right?
Like, it's awesome when your peers or, you know, people above you give you a nod on something. So I was like, hell, yeah, that was incredible. I don't know what anybody else was smoking. It was garbage in comparison, so.
Of course it was. Yes, obviously. That's all that matters. But, you know, that was a great experience.
So that was really cool. So I'm glad I got to watch and listen to that show. Yeah. And then they have Cigar Media coming up next week.
Oh, do they? Yeah. Yeah. They got Eric Gooders.
Yeah. And our Lord and Savior, Will Coop. Oh, yes. Lord and Savior.
I think McTavish is going to be on there as well. I'll watch him as soon as Coop comes on. We're not, but we're not on. No, we're not.
They already had us on. We're not on. We got our own show. We had our own episode.
We had our own. Yeah, we did. But I would love to slide in for Scar Media just to listen to Coop tell us how much of a... How much of a dredge on the industry?
Yeah, we're... We're bad for the industry. We're bad for the industry. That's it, yes.
We're bad for the industry. Was that his words? Yeah. Wow.
We're bad for the industry with all the ad space that we take and all the self-promoting... Oh, because we take ad space? No, we don't. That's the joke.
The self-promoting that we do, and all those other things, you know. Self-promoting on our own show? Yeah. Well, we don't.
Right. Right, that's what I'm saying. Hey, okay. Well, no, we do.
I put a little commercial at the end of each episode for the Warbear or the Warbear t-shirt. Okay. And then at the beginning, we always say what event is coming up for the shop. Okay, do you, okay, but broad markets, online access, do we talk about any of that?
No. Wow. Well, here's to you, Coop. From the Bad Influencers.
Yeah. Bad for the Industries. Sounds like a great band name. McTavish texted me last night.
He was doing research on the BCA. I guess maybe for that episode he's going to go on. " I was like, "Yes, I did. " Do you know who I am?
Right. Well, or at least you read the Half Wheel article. Uh, no, he found it somewhere else. No kidding.
Yeah. Man, you should have rolled with it. Okay. Of course I did.
What can I do for it? Yeah, of course I did. What's your problem? All right.
Well, this concludes the Daily Podcast. We got to get back to shipping out some War Bears. Yep. All right, guys.
Thank you very much. Thank you. We'll see you tomorrow. Appreciate you.
Goodbye. Bye. Bye. We'll be right back.
