ACHP 419 Holiday Travel, Black Friday

Episode Summary
Episode 419 of A Cigar Hustler's Podcast is a holiday-week roundtable with Mike Palmer, Mikey Stepankavich and "Blackjack" Boots Delgado. The crew opens with off-beat news — a Palm Coast petition to carve a "Trump County" out of Flagler County, record-setting Thanksgiving travel numbers (81.8 million Americans on the move, 360,000+ flights, 17.8 million TSA screenings), and a Campbell's Soup IT VP placed on leave after a secretly recorded rant about "soup for poor people" and 3D-printed chicken.
The retail conversation is the meat of the episode: September U.S. retail sales barely moved (+0.2%), value retailers like Walmart, TJ Maxx and Best Buy are winning, and consumers are cutting splurges while still spending on dining out. That leads into a practical Black Friday discussion — how the big one-day doorbuster has been replaced by month-long online promotions at Amazon, Target and Nike, why brick-and-mortar isn't going away, and how customer service is the differentiator that keeps people walking into shops. The hosts also compare their own brick-and-mortar business to online cigar sales, arguing the shop is the more consistent, service-driven side of the business.
On the cigar news side, the guys cover Tatuaje's Sextooth — a new regular-production, price-conscious line named for Los Angeles musician/poet Andres Stefan (who performs as Sextooth), a longtime friend of Pete Johnson. The blend uses an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with Nicaraguan binder and filler, is made at My Father Cigars in Nicaragua, and ships in four sizes named after his songs: Fast and Slow, Holiday, William Blake and Vampire. They also break down Cigars International's new 5,700-square-foot Newport, Kentucky store on the Ohio River, its December 6 grand opening, and Scandinavian Tobacco Group's broader retail portfolio (Thompson Cigar, CigarBid, Cigar.com, Pipes & Cigars, Club Macanudo).
The show closes with a mini "What's the Score" game guessing Charlie Minato's halfwheel rating for the Costa Rican-made, $45 Atabey Black Delirious (Ecuadorian wrapper, Dominican and Peruvian filler) — plus Thanksgiving trivia covering the first three-day feast, Ben Franklin's turkey campaign, the birth of the TV dinner, and the Butterball hotline.

Well, it's all tight. I got to fix around 11. Oh, okay. Well, that one worked.

Okay, our first story. Petition pushes for new Trump County in Central Florida. Here's where it be proposal would be. What was it?
What was it? I don't know. Stroke? Stroke?
I love that. I love that. I love that. High hole silver.
Here's where it be proposed. Here's where it be proposed. Wow, check. GPD needs to check their jammer.
Wow. Their jammer. Their grammar. I had a stroke.
Are you okay? I don't know. Two days now. I need to take my medicine barely.
The cocaine is not worn up. No. The proposal would impact Coastal. We'll just skip that first line altogether.
Too much podcasting for him. Yeah. Yeah. Every day, just the batteries won't stay charged.
J5 alive. I will have no disassemble. Proposal would impact Coastal Center Florida. Palm Coast woman is petitioning to add yet another county to the Sunshine State.
This one named after the nation's 47th president. The petition urges lawmakers and Governor Ron DeSantis to redesignate a portion of Flagler County as Trump County. According to the petitioner who identified herself as Jen Harold, the county would extend throughout the coastal barrier islands off Flagler, St. John's, and Belushi counties.
This range spans from the northern point of Anastasia Island through the southern end of Ponce Inlet, being separated by the Mainland by the Manzana and Halifax Rivers. For the reason segment of the petition, Harold wrote the following: President Trump is a once-in-a-generation leader, a master dealmaker, real estate titan, and the greatest president of our time. As the first president to call Florida home, it's time we honor his extraordinary legacy by establishing Florida's 68th county, Trump County, a lasting testament to the impact on our state and nation. The new county demands an extraordinary canvas, so we're proposing a stunning 60-mile stretch of Northeast Florida's pristine coastline.
This jewel boasts breathtaking state parks, a world-class coastal golf resort, charming old Florida towns, and the world's most famous beach. With vast potential for growth and redevelopment, it's the perfect stage for future Trump-inspired projects that will shine as brightly as his legacy. He's the 68th president, correct? Or was the 68th?
Serious? Yeah, seriously. Thank you so much. No, she said 68th county.
He's the 47th president. Okay, I was just trying to figure out. 45 and 47. Why they would do it in this county and not like one down south where he's at.
I would imagine because this lady lives in this county, he's the 60th president. We're so advanced. We're in the future. He said 68.
Well, 68. He said 68? He said 68. Oh my God, I heard 60th.
No, I was just wondering because she said it was the 68th county. He thought it coincided with the number of counties in Florida. We have as many counties as we have presidents. This is going to line up.
I'm just trying to figure out why they would do that. She lives in that area. She wants her county to be Trump County. Going down in Trump County.
Why would she want to go down? She can't, I don't know if you could do a petition for a county you don't live in. I guess you could, but... Is there an Obama county?
Does she want a... No. He doesn't have the legacy, apparently, that Mr. Trump has, where they'll start Trump land and...
Is there a George Washington county? Maybe. Here's where you lost me on the Trump county. She said, like, there was golf course and all this other stuff.
Nothing was mentioned about like a designated monster truck area, there's just solely monster trucks going on, I think that that would be... You think Trump likes monster trucks? I think that a lot of his followers do. Oh.
That's the catch. Yeah. I think she's trying to embody the Trump personality, not his followers. Because there was nothing mentioned about a guy with a horned hat either.
There's gonna be a horned hat boulevard? Yes, horned hat boulevard. Warren Hatton Boulevard. Anyway, the petition was launched on November 17th.
January 6th Street. Has a target of 500 signatures. You only need 500 to get a new county? That's it?
We need Cigar Hustler Boulevard or something. I mean, we could do that overnight. Yeah, 500? That's something.
I could whip that together. Thoughts? Thought as of Tuesday evening, she only had 70 signatures. Well, you can have one in Deltona.
Right, that's where we're going. You can have Cigar Hustler County? No, you can have Cigar Hustler Boulevard. And change the one up front.
We should... Yeah? Yeah. As an icon in this...
Right. As a major... 16-year icon in this dilapidated city. As a major staple in the city.
The petition has... Well, yeah, you are the best retailer. That's right. That's right.
Best small business or whatever. That's right, it's confirmed. Right. The petition has until May 16th to gather the remaining signatures.
Even if the petition reaches its goal, however, there is no information about what that would entail. So nobody knows what the next step is. But it made the news. It made the news.
How obnoxious. How obnoxious. It made the local list. Because his name was in it.
This was submitted by our rover reporter, Paul Carlson. Oh. Did you read it in the paper? All right, next story.
The chaos of Thanksgiving travel begins today. A record number of people will be on the move for the holiday. And the police are out. Oh, yeah.
If you're traveling for Thanksgiving, the best advice we can offer you today is that you should have left yesterday. That makes sense. S. between today and December 1st, according to AAA, straining all modes of transportation.
All modes strained. What, what, what? They get their stat from that? Is that their stat place?
All modes strained? What? What is he talking about? How does AAA get their stats for this?
I don't know. They take pictures of cars moving. I have no idea. It's probably based on broken down vehicles.
Because, like, say, like, Mikey, you're traveling somewhere tomorrow. Like, do you report that somewhere? No. Oh, I do.
I call in AAA. I don't know. I'm going out to Sorento. It's about 45 minutes.
Just checking in. I'll let you know when I'm there. Wait, do they have an app that tracks everybody? Well, they do have an app, and I imagine it's some type of map type app where you can get directions or something.
So maybe they go from that. Number of people that log into their thing. Or maybe they ask chat GPT. Or maybe they just use the statistics from where they get their stats and then we moved on from that.
Yes. You drive and blah, blah, blah. I love that. I can tell you one thing, again, that on the way to work today, I saw three people pulled over.
Did you really? Yeah. I saw no traffic on the way here this morning. Were they taking bribes?
What time did you get here? m.? No, I got here at 5:00 to 8:00. Normally there's traffic, obviously there's no school traffic, but the work traffic seem to be lighter too, unless the way I go is all work or school people.
No, I think a lot of people at this point are not working, they're off, or half a day at best, you know? Yeah. Not here though. Not here.
Or they went to work late today. I heard a lot of people were going in late today, and then also having an early day today. Which I don't know when that became a thing. Early day?
Yeah, like an early day before Thanksgiving. No, not early day, I'm having an early day today. You're already getting a four-day weekend. I'm also having an early day.
Well, we're different, right? We own our own businesses and stuff, right? We're built different. But I've never understood the- We're bad for the industry.
Yes, we're bad for the industry. You're already getting a four-day weekend. Now you want four and a half. You need five.
Paul's going up the back stairs. The FAA is bracing for the busiest Thanksgiving week in 15 years, with more than 360,000 flights scheduled between yesterday and next Tuesday. 8 million people. Thank God they opened the government just in time.
Right. Many of whom will be dressed comfortably, despite Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy's attempt at pajama shaming flyers last week. That's not nice. Do you want to travel in your pajamas?
No. I don't like that when they travel in their pajamas. I don't care. Yeah, it's their prerogative.
They paid for the ticket? Yeah. I don't want to see your dirty socked feet. Well, they're not like putting those in your face.
I mean, those are on the ground. No, not always! I recommend you make more money and start flying private. You know?
Michael, I need a raise. Okay, no problem. Will you take a post-dated third-party out-of-state check? Only if my private plane will to.
I'll just sign the check over to them. You're gonna have to talk to them. Other options may be equally hectic, per AAA, that we don't know how to get their information. 8% increase over last year.
According to the transportation analytics from NREX, so they get their information from NREX, the worst time to hit the road in major metro areas in the afternoon today and tomorrow. That makes sense. Hmm, my son and his new wife are coming over in the afternoon. Oh, so they're part of the statistics.
Apparently that's a bad time. Apparently that doesn't bother. 5% compared to last year. S.
will likely get some sort of troubling weather over the next week, all good, including severe storms across the south and snow in the northern Rockies that could impact road safety. This is us telling you we're implanting the clouds right now. Yeah, we are now controlling the weather. Bad weather for everyone.
This is very interesting, man. Very interesting stuff we're talking about. Traveling, transportation. This sounds horrible.
Like, tomorrow's supposed to be a great day, right? Thanksgiving, you spend time with people you like. I'm not going to say family, because not everybody likes spending time with family. But people you like, you know, eat good food, you watch football, sleep.
Yeah, I got to tell you, my neighbors have this all figured out. They are brilliant with this. Turn the lights off, close the curtains, and they're hiding on the floor. No, on Sunday, they leave, and they go to- Last Sunday?
Yes. Okay. They go to like a log cabin for the week. They're away from everybody, they don't have to deal with a single in-law or outlaw or any of that sort of thing, they just go.
And they've done this for a couple of years, they've actually invited us and… Oh, they're those people. Yes. And I'm like, man, I would love to go there. This sounds amazing.
Take me with you. Because I gotta tell you, the pressure that goes on in your house for Thanksgiving is atrocious. like the amount of kids yeah the cooking that's going on oh yeah the preparation for the cooking plus children get out of the kitchen exactly exactly the kids are running around like you know and like to add insult to injury for us like the garbage disposal started leaking last night oh there goes it's already began that was miserable our ac's broken oh and you gotta cook With the AC broken. Boots, can you get the door?
Yeah. He's going to the other door. Like, these things are crazy. There you go.
You know, I know that I'm going to get yelled at as soon as I get home. As I've already screwed up a couple things. I'm like, oh God. Oh, I'm getting yelled at for sure.
Well, on holidays, the husband can never do anything right. Is that how that works? Yeah, it's just a thing. It's a thing.
Just expect it. That's why I try to fall asleep all the time. And that works? Yeah.
You're not getting yelled at going, you're sleeping, I needed help. You needed help. What could I have done? No.
What could I have really have done wrong while my eyes were closed? You could have been watching the children. You could have helped wash the dishes. No.
We used paper plates, bro. First of all, you got to get on that level because- Get on the paper plate train. I'm done. Yeah, you got to do the, maybe the upscale paper plates because it's a holiday, but yeah, paper plates.
Paper plates, foil pans. Right. Everything goes in the trash. Yeah.
Maybe a new garbage can. Yeah. I got to tell you, shout out to the guy at Home Depot yesterday because I was going and buying the gas, And he's like, maybe the pipe's broken, why don't you buy the pipe, too? That guy was right.
Oh, he up-sailed you. The pipe was broken. No, no. Yeah, the pipe was broken.
Yeah. He didn't up-sail me. You were going in for the gasket. It was actually the last pipe, the last elbow pipe, and it didn't have a scan thing.
" Oh. " What type of pipe, what type of sound was it? " Like that? Yeah.
What kind of noises garbage disposal making, sir? Here's the pipe. Oh, my God. You need this pipe right here.
There's no tag on it. It's a special pipe. Well, thanks, Steve, at Home Depot for the free pipe. Oh.
Excellent. Your brother's leaving. Okay. S.
retail spending sagged in September. S. retailers. Oh.
The government finally dropped its retail data after all the shutdown delays and the big reveal. Retail sales in September barely budged. Womp. 6% pop.
3%, so everyone's a little disappointed. Yeah, of course. You always want more. What's wild in the wrap-up?
A pretty solid Q3 overall. 65%, but now it looks like shoppers are pulling back on the fun stuff. Clothes, cars, anything that feels like a splurge. Yeah, we were talking about this.
We were talking about that yesterday. They are still buying personal care items, furniture, and, of course, going out to eat and drink, because apparently we give up new jeans before we'll give up a night at the bar. Or cigars. On the corporate side, the value kings are winning Walmart-crushed expectations and even raised its profit outlook again.
TJ Maxx and Marshall, the land of chaotic treasure hunting, bumped their yearly numbers up too, and Best Buy actually had its biggest same-store sale gain in four years. Well, have you seen what's going on at Best Buy? No, what is going on at Best Buy? They are, they're, so it used to be, when you go to Best Buy, they had like the cooler looking stuff, and it was super expensive.
Right. Right, and then they started doing price matching, right? That was a thing. And then, but when you did price matching, it's like, no, it has to be like for like, and they never had like for like, right?
The number was different by one number or whatever. " Really? So if you go to Best Buy, like, let's say, like, right now the big thing is the 98 inch screen TV. Yeah.
Right. Sam's has it for $2,000. They have it for $1,800. Oh.
But, and it's a little different brand, but nobody gives a fuck about that anymore. Right. Well, I do want to talk about Black Friday deals and all those other things, but before we kind of get into that, you know, you did mention that dinners and people going out to eat are still, I know you said bar, but I don't think that that's exactly what's going on. I think that look when you work your ass off and you know and things aren't going right and you're stressed out of your mind and you still got to feed the kids and all of this other shit like dinner going out to dinner is more of a relief you get to kind of sit down you don't have to deal with the cooking or any of that other stuff you get served and I think that's why that's still doing well yeah it's that time of year to you know people are out shopping for Christmas you only got so many more days well that's that's ramping up as for the time but this is Q3 The Q3.
Oh, the Q3. Yeah, they just ended. So, I think that that's why that works, because, I mean, I feel that way. I'm like, okay, yeah, you know, whatever.
Let's go sit down. Right. Yeah, let's not have to cook tonight. Let's not deal with it.
We'll order in before we'll go out. Yeah. That's even less work. I don't know.
I have a lot of frustration with ordering in. I think that people just still want to feel some type of service, you know? Yeah, I want someone to refill my Coke. Yeah.
I don't want to move. I want to get my soda refilled. More ice, please. Do you want to drive to the restaurant and have to wait for a table?
Yeah, but then- I don't go to those fancy rooms. I don't have to wait. There's usually tables available. Well, if they're waiting on you, where do you go?
There's a Mexican place right by our house that we go to all the time. Taco Bell? Torchy's Tacos? Torchy's Tacos.
No, not Torchy's. This show brought to you by Torchy's Tacos. I wish. The hottest tacos in Central Florida.
We could have had that. We were so close. We're so close. Yeah, I wish.
So close to Torchy's Tacos. We could be eating tacos every Monday. We eat tacos every Monday. Okay.
These are the best tacos in the world. All right, so I do want to talk about Black Friday, though. Yes, Black Friday. Because Black Friday is right around the corner.
Day after tomorrow. It's practically upon us. Well, actually, when this comes out, this will be on Black Friday. This will be on Black Friday.
It will be on Black Friday. So. Watch this in the morning. Where do you think the best Black Friday is?
Like, what is your strategy for buying for Christmas? Boots, go ahead. I know you're talking briefly about Christmas. Oh, I have no strategy for buying for Christmas.
I'm not surprised. Well, you have no strategy. So, when it comes to the kids, my job is to pry out of the children what they want. That's my job.
Tell daddy what you want. And then Tia figures out where to go get it and she acquires it. The strategy to obtain these things. Does she look for Black Friday deals?
She does probably 99% on Amazon, so I think, yeah, she does like the pre, like, Amazon has Black Friday the whole month, right? It's not just one day, yeah. So that's where she buys most of her stuff. But no, we don't have like a certain spot outside of that, I guess.
I mean, maybe like Kohl's, Walmart, like if it's closed Kohl's. What about online? Like, do you look for the Black Friday deals on Amazon? Yeah, that's, no, no, no, she does that on Amazon, yeah.
Yeah, okay. Sorry. Yeah, yeah. And what about you?
Are there, the, it seems like the days of the huge Black Friday deals are past. It starts earlier now. Oh, I think, I mean, I haven't really seen anything other than on Amazon. Well, it starts like on Thursday night, right?
I, well, I don't think, and they're already, they've already kind of popped up. Well, I mean, I've gone to Target and see the stuff already stacked in the aisles and stuff where they station it, but you don't see the big sales like you used to, I don't think. I mean, the big, like when I was growing up working at Kmart, I remember one, one year I was sitting on a, A mound of microwaves, writing them up as fast as I could, and people are just taking them out from underneath them. Right.
Yeah, yeah, well, that was when it first started, right? Right, yeah, that was the big microwave push, I understand, but there's got to be something out that, the equivalent of it now. I think it's just watered down. Some type of all-encompassing video game that you stick your leg in or something?
Well, what's kind of happened is it's all online now. Yeah. Right, yeah. So, you know, like, we have a tendency to do Target.
Right. And Target's, they got these deals that they're kind of ongoing, so we were looking at different things that are- Online, right? Yeah, this one's 50% off, you know, this one's 30% off, you know, even like Nike, the Nike store, everything's an additional 25% off to get those early purchases in, so you no longer have to wait in line like you used to, and then run for the four TVs. Pile to pile.
Exactly. You just kind of, you just say, oh, yeah, click. Yeah, like Jax is of the age where the gifts for him, I want to make sure that they're apparel that he likes. So he went on Nike last night, and he said, I would like this, this, this, this, because it's all 25% off.
Boom. Done, right? So the headache of the run, run, run isn't as apparent. Do you think the brick-and-mortar shopping goes away eventually?
No. No, because I think people always want to touch something. Yeah, I don't think the brick and mortar goes away in its entirety. I think that the experience is still important.
Now, what you will see, though, is that customer service should have a resurgence, because customer service is what changes all of that. Right, that's the only way you're going to get people in. Yeah, like, hey, that was a great experience. Right.
I will do that again, right? Sure. If you go in and nobody cares that you're there and no one's paying attention to you and you need help. And I mean, that happened to me the other day.
You just I just walked out. I was like, OK, well, we're not getting anywhere here. You know, so let's just leave. Right.
So if somebody greeted me and said, hey, how are you? You know, what are you looking for today? Oh, let me let me try and, you know, let me help put that together for you. You're like, oh, this is awesome.
Right. It's a service. Yeah, which kind of takes me back to why I think that restaurants are still doing okay, because people need that, they need that contact, they need that experience, you know? Yeah.
So, okay, moving on. I should have fast-forwarded. Damn! I thought something was wrong here.
And looking ahead, despite all the things are too expensive, anxiety, wait, things are too expensive. The anxiety of the holidays might still be strong for retailers. 6% bump in seasonal spending, not because people are buying more stuff, but because everything costs more. Hmm.
It's the holiday season. All right, Campbell's Soup, mm-mm, good. Mm-mm, poor people. If you're poor people.
Campbell's Soup VP is on leave after secret recording appears to show him mocking poor customers and 3D-printed chicken. A secret 3D-printed? Secret recording? What is going on?
Secret recording. Campbell's Soup just put one of their execs on ice after a lawsuit claimed he was privately thrashing the company and its customers. The guy is Martin Bally, VP of IT, allegedly went on a full-blown rant saying Campbell sells shit for fucking poor people. Maybe that was the end of the sentence.
Nice. And branded, oh, and bragged, "I don't buy fucking Campbell's products barely anymore. " There's also an auto-recording, Campbell's hasn't authenticated yet, where he supposedly calls the soup bioengineered and says, I don't want to eat a fucking piece of chicken that came from a 3D printer, do you? Oh, he's done.
Wow. He lost it. According to the lawsuit, he also insulted the intelligence of his Indian co-workers and blamed Indians in an expletive-filled triad for a tech issue not getting fixed. Oh, man.
He's, I mean... I don't think he's working at Campbell's Soup anymore. This guy just tried, you think he was just trying to get fired? Campbell suspended him immediately and said the comments were unacceptable and patently absurd, especially the 3D printed chicken nonsense.
They reminded everyone that their chicken comes from long trusted USDA approved US suppliers. And maybe the best part they noted is the guy works in IT and has nothing to do with how we make our food. Yeah, I was wondering because you had said that his title... Yes, he's an IT guy.
I was like, who is this guy? How does, I just don't, what is this, Watergate, what are we doing here? Gay house in the Campbell kitchen, except the guy yelling wasn't even in the kitchen. Okay, now, it does go on to say, the reason he was being recorded is because he was making racial slurs against Indian people, and a guy got fired when he brought it to the attention of higher-ups, apparently, or something.
Oh, nice. So, tampering with the witness. He went and had a lunch with this guy and recorded him going on one of his triads, and the soup for poor people in the 3D chicken wasn't what he was after, but he got some extra stuff. He got that as well.
Hey man, guess what? Hey, I know we're here at lunch, but I'd like to really do a podcast about how much we hate the Indians. Let me tell you about this. How about them Indians, huh, there, Bob?
Yeah, I hate them. You know what else? I hate that 3D printed chicken. " of the day and like soup of the day soup of the day i look like i'm kimball what am i poor i don't want no damn soup of the day i like progresso progresso sorry oh rich people progressive progressive it's progresso it's progresso yeah progressive is interns oh yeah that's progressive that's what i just said oh all right mike you got a video for us today no i do not have a video today that's fine because i don't want to edit it in anyway all All right, perfect, in honor of our 68th president, Donald Trump from the new Trump County.
Yes, Trump County 68. Okay. What are you doing now? Are we pausing again?
No. Now onto Cigar News. That was it on regular news? That was it on regular news.
That was four stories. What do you want? Man, you didn't even pull the one from Deltona that happened yesterday? Please tell us.
Oh. Put the camera on Mikey and tell us. Bing. And there was a guy sitting outside his driveway lying shit on fire with a long rifle and the cops had to hit him with SIM rounds and everything.
Really? Oh, yeah. The helicopter was out. I was hanging out with Carlos in the evening time and we saw this helicopter like going around, going around, going around.
I was like, oh, they're definitely looking for somebody. This guy's circled like 20 times at this point. Right. And he's like, well, let me look on the call list.
So he looked in, he's like, there's something going on in Deltona. so it didn't like specifically say but then the news clipping came out i have it i can send it to you yeah um it's on facebook okay uh but yeah the guy was just sitting out there he's an ex-veteran i think he was having some issues right but he had a bulletproof vest on he had uh m16 across his chest right loaded ready to go and he was putting stuff in the driveway line it all on fire they had There's like 30 cops in front of his house. Yeah, he went Rambo First Blood in Deltona. " And he came, came like near him, the guy lit him up with all the sim rounds.
Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. Like the rubber bullets or whatever? Oh, yeah. Ah.
And it shows like in the video, them lining him up. Really? Oh, yeah. Oh, that sucks.
Well, I mean, thank God nobody got hurt. Yeah. I can't believe you didn't pull that star. No, you know what you should do?
Here's this crazy concept, okay, you're not gonna believe this, but if only we had like a group text of the three of us, and like you mentioned something, that hey, this would be good, we could totally just put it in. It's wild, I know. So, maybe think about it. We should start that.
Yeah, we should get that done. We should do that. What are we doing? Sorry?
We're gonna start a group text of the three of us. Yeah. And that way, when there's something that we want to bring up on the show, we just put it in there. Oh, just put it in there.
Wow, what a great idea. Isn't that a great, crazy concept? You know, I'm glad I'm leveling up here. This is, yeah, I never knew I could pull the stories as well, so I will suggest some stories to you.
There you go. Great, you could be a bunch of stupid stories. Oh, you don't have to cover them. Oh, great.
At least he's putting in input. There you go, it's true, at least he's trying. Oh, do you have a gambling pick for the, for, wait, this will be Friday. Yeah, it's only for the weekend.
He only does it on Monday. Oh, on Monday? Okay, that's fine. Tatuaje is shipping Sex Tooth next week.
I'm sorry, what's the name of the cigar? Sex Tooth. Sex? Sex, as in ee, ee, ee, sex?
Oh, wow. Tooth, like in your mouth. Wow. Go ahead.
So, Room 101 gets in trouble for the Rocket Dog. Dog Rocket. Dog Rocket. Who'd they get in trouble with?
Well, everybody was just kind of commenting on it, remember? Yeah, okay. When the concept came out. Now we have a sex tooth?
Yes. Shaped like a tooth. At the 2025 PCA Convention and Trade Show, Tatuaje was teasing a new project called Sex Tooth, described as a possible upcoming release, but one that wasn't being talked about as a confirmed new project. Now the Sex Tooth project is ready to head to stores as a new regular production, price conscious addition to the Tatuaje family.
Sex Tooth is the name under which Andres Stefan, Steffi? Yeah. Steffi? Sure.
A Los Angeles based musician, poet, and actor performs. He has also been a longtime friend of Pete Johnson, who we are now also friends of. Owner of Tatuaje. The blend features an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with Nicaraguan binders and fillers and is offered in four sizes.
Yeah. The Sex Tooth Fast and Slow. Oh my Lord. Is that the real name?
Yeah, it's the real name. Oh wow. Sex Tooth Holiday. Sextooth, William Blake, and Sextooth, Vampire.
I think these are all songs, by the way. Go ahead. The cigars are made at My Father's Cigars SA and SLI Nicaragua. Each cigar is in the series inspired by and named after one of his songs.
Boom. Great move, Michael. Does it say the size of the... Yes, but I didn't read those.
I'm not going back to that. Yeah. I've been writing songs and smoking cigars for a long time, said Sextooth in a press release. Oh, that is his name.
Oh, that's the guy's name. Oh, the project with Tatuaje feels like the best gig I've gotten a chance to play. A representative said that the first shipment is arriving this week and will be shipping to retailers next week. Yeah, so I got to meet the guy.
He was at PCA. Nice. He was cool. I like this guy.
I like this sex tooth. Oh. He, uh, cut and, uh, print that one. That's a new shirt.
If you're, uh, I like the sex tooth. Listen, I have an abundance of shirts coming out. I just wanted to know, like, some of these things I can't, I just, you know, I don't know what to tell you. It's crazy.
I can't make shit up. It's just, you know. Maybe start making crock pens. Bad, what are we, what are we?
Bad. Bad for the industry. Bad for the industry. We are bad for the industry.
I mean, my God. According to a media insider. According. You know that media, you know that media insider once called us media.
But now we're bad for the industry. Now we're bad. How the tides have turned. You know what?
I'm glad that he said that. Because now he gave us a great title. Oh, we have embraced it. We don't care.
Right. Yeah, we don't run from anything. Yeah. You know what?
I need to look up, I need to find where he said that to us, that you guys are cigar media. It's on one of these. Oh, it's on one of the shows. Yeah.
He's only been on twice. Probably the first one. Was it on our show? I think it was on our show.
Oh, really? Okay. I'll check our shows. So, because that'll be good for us.
You guys are cigar media. But we're bad for the industry. You put that on the back. Oh, yeah, like mix that together.
You guys are cigar media on the front and the back, but now you're bad for the industry. But you're bad for the industry. And then like when you did that one video, he's like da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da. We're probably not considered media anymore.
So anyways, getting back to the story though. Oh, yes, back to the story. No, Sextooth, he's a good guy. What kind of music does he play?
Rock. So, I think. So whenever- Sextooth, what do you think he- Opera. - I don't know, bro.
- Smooth jazz. - I couldn't tell by the name. - Smooth jazz. - He sings the blues.
- There's Kenny G, and then there's Sex Tooth. - Oh, that's it. - Yep. There was Songbird.
- Yeah, you should see the shape of his flute. - Songbird, and then Fast and Slow, you know what I mean? - The shape of his flute, wow. - No, but he was really cool.
- We, you know, I hit it off well with him. - He was, well, a guy like Sex Tooth, he wouldn't hit it off with him. - Yeah, I guess you're right. So, I've had several of these sex tooths, these cigars.
Yes. Which one is the best? I had the Vampire, I think, because mine was pointed. I think the Vampire was pretty good.
I think there was another one that I thought was even better, though. Fast and slow. But they're good, they're good cigars, especially for the price point. Well, it says budgeted.
Yeah, that's crazy that it says that in there, because his cigars are already pretty cheap. He's done a good job not raising his prices. Yeah. Like you said in the interview, he's out of Miami.
Some of it. Some of it. So no tariffs. Yeah, that's awesome.
Miami's practically competitive at this point. Oh, do you think maybe more cigar companies, I know this is off kilter, but do you think maybe more cigar companies do that? Start making stuff here? I don't know.
Maybe some people start making stuff here. There's gotta be a way to do it that is still price conscious because people are doing it. Right. I just think that you might struggle to find the employees.
Yeah. Well, everybody's looking to leave the third world, so you bring them over. America? When I come to America.
Through the proper channels, of course. Obviously, through the proper channels. Yeah. Yeah.
The proper channels would be large cigar boxes with holes in them. Oh. Wow. Okay.
All right. Cigars International is opening their Newport, Kentucky store. Who knew they had another one ready to go? Fired up.
Cigars International, the world's largest seller of cigars, has announced that it has opened its newest store. This location is One Levy Way, P106 in Newport, Kentucky, located in Newport on the Levy District, obviously by the address. Right. The store is on the banks of the Ohio River in its minutes from Cincinnati.
Cigars International Newport is a 5,700 square feet and includes a full-service bar, a walk-in humidor, indoor lounge, two levels of outdoor seating, and a partridge in a pear tree. There's a pear tree? Yes. Wow.
Unlike most of Cigars International stores, this is not a standalone new construction build. We are thrilled to bring the Cigars International experience to Newport on the Levy. It must be a fancy place or something. Said Scott Vasco, VP of Retail for Cigars International in a press release, this store is not just about buying great cigars, it's about community, it's about relaxation, and it's about creating memories.
Is it maybe Levy, not Levy? Potato, potato. Yeah, I think you're right. I think it's Levy.
Down by the Levy? Not down by the Levy? Throw the Chevy to the Levy. Levy is like a dam or something.
So that makes sense, it's on the river. The Levy was dry? Levy was dry, yeah. Yes.
Went down to the Levy? Right. Yeah, you and I. Our team has created a space where you can discover your next favorite cigar, unwind with friends, and enjoy the company of fellow cigar enthusiasts.
While the store is already open, a grand opening party is scheduled before Saturday, December 6th. Boots, are you going? To where? This grand opening.
Are you cutting the ribbon or something? Sure. Maybe doing DJ Booty Booter or whatever? DJ Boots.
Yep, I'll be there. Meet me there. Cigars International says the first 500 attendees will receive a curated gift pack. Oh, a curated, oh, of cigars that we can't sell.
Very, left, left very vague. Yes, left very vague. Unbanded. Unbanded.
m. The new location is less than a mile from the party source, a third, 113,000 square foot liquor store. Ooh, that also sells a large volume of cigars. Dear God.
Wow, that's a big ass liquor store. Cigars International is the world's largest retail of cigars and is part of a massive omni-channel retail operation owned by Scandinavian Tobacco Group. It is best known for its mail order business, which includes a website and catalog, but has long operated retail stores. In the last decade, STG has ramped up investment in its physical stores.
, ranging from non-Cuban versions of Cohiba and Partagas to Alec Bradley, CAO, Macanudo, Room 101, and others. The company splits its portfolio of brands between two separate sales teams, General Cigar and Ford Cigar Company. I was unaware that they owned Cigars International. STG?
Yeah. Seriously? Yeah, I was completely unaware. He didn't know the 68th president had made that arrangement.
Yeah. It was under the 68th president. It was an executive order by the 68th president. Yeah, he put it together.
That way, they can't get a monopoly. Why would they be investing in these buildings as the industry is saying people are pulling back on brick and mortar, right? You think the industry is saying that? Well, I mean, all the new stuff that we're talking about that's kind of indicators are leading towards that.
I think in the online, in the cigar world, the online reports we've heard is that online sales are down. And we've actually talked about that. And I think that the reason why that's happening is because your cigar consumer isn't smoking, isn't buying as much. So they don't mind walking in and buying a cigar at your local brick and mortar.
I know you're saying that they're down, but like, okay, you do both businesses, right? Yeah. Like, which one's better for you? Brick and mortar.
Really? Yeah. Brick-and-Mortar is a better business for me. It's more established, it's more consistent.
And the guys that are upstairs now come in almost every single day. Yeah. There's not guys that buy online every single day. Online isn't as big for us as it is for a lot of these other guys, you know?
Because we offer a service. Yeah, we provide customer service, even online, so... Okay. Yeah.
Didn't you have a guy buy one cigar online the other day? Yeah. That just seems odd. One?
That seems more expensive to buy one. That's more occurring. I think you see more of that. You know, I think in three to five days, I'd like to have a cigar.
I'm going to buy one online. Well, he probably thought about Thanksgiving. Was there something unusual? Yeah, he was probably looking for something specific, and he saw that we still had it.
Ah, gotcha. Wasn't like he just ordered a Monte Cristo or something? No. Gotcha.
No. More often than not, you see what works, what tracks is like something that's sold out by other people that are above you in SEOs. Right? Or something that those guys don't have.
Hmm. You know? So. All right.
All right. Now we got a quick... I'm sorry. We got a quick What's the Score minigame.
Oh, okay. Because we need some time. All right. Was there any update on the Guy Fieri thing?
Any phone calls? No, but I did see he has an event on December 9th that he is planning to go to. Oh. Big shocker.
Walker. Is that here? Several people commented that, oh, this isn't happening because he's not going to be there. But the rep said, no, he says he's coming.
He's going to be there. Is that the Asheville one in North Carolina? It's Gavin. So I don't think Gavin does North Carolina.
It's more, I think it's in Alabama. Okay. Okay. I messaged Gavin for a comment and he refused.
He didn't answer anything back. We've been told out here at Espinosa that we're not allowed to call it. You know, Richie Wright is probably one of the only Espinosa guys that's not on the Patreon. Really?
Yeah. Oh, they're all on the Patreon. Espinosa's one of our biggest supporters for Patreon. Nice.
Actually, I'm sorry. Espinosa is our biggest supporter for Patreon. They're great. At this point, they've surpassed the computer that we got five years ago or six years ago from Skip.
Oh. Oh, with money that they've contributed to the show? Yeah, they had to. Sorry, Skip, I don't know what I'm telling you.
No, they're great guys, man. I was watching an interview with Richie at Lizona Palooza with Dropped Ash, I think it was, this guy's name. It was a great, it was a good interview. He had a lot of, you know, great things to say about their customers and clients and stuff.
I thought you'd say they had a lot of great things to say about us. It's not all about us, buddy. I know it's not all about, but I was looking for another insult. I like the insults.
We're bad for the industry. Bad for the industry. That's the best insult of them all right there. " We got a cool nickname.
To go as our podcast, bad for the industry. Bad for the industry. On every weekday now. By the way, this ad space brought to you by, oh wait, we don't have that.
It's just one show all the way through. Yeah. All right, here's the main game. It's from November 25th, it's a recent cigar.
It was reviewed by Charlie Minato. Okay. Okay. It is a Costa Rican cigar, limited edition.
It is the Atabe Black Delirious. I think I've smoked one Atabe my whole life. 92. I'll go first.
Atabe, just right out of the box. Yeah. Atabe Black Delirious. This is serious.
I'm going to have to jump around, Mike, here, because I know nothing about Atabe, other than I didn't like the one I smoked. So go what do you think? Yeah, let's go 90. You said you didn't like it?
Yeah, I mean, I would rate it a 2. You probably had the regular one. This is the Black Delirious one. This will make you delirious.
Okay, it's from Costa Rica. The wrapper is from Ecuador. The binder is undisclosed. Fillers, Dominican Republic and Peru.
It's a 5 3/4 by 55. It is round. Sells for $45, and they smoked three of them. He smoked three of these?
74. For the review, he smoked three. Yeah, it's standard. 74.
74. Oh, because I'm going to jump around you. Jump around me. Bring it way down.
I mean, that price is a little high for a cigar. It's an Atabe cigar. And the tobacco sounded... It's from Peru, for God's sakes.
It's Peruvian. Oh. It's a little sprinkle-dinkle. And made in Costa Rica, so it's all over the place.
Oh. The roller's very tired gathering all the tobacco. This is Charlie, so I think a brand like this, he's going to be in the 80s, so let's go 87. Okay.
First clue. The aromas from the wrapper are medium plus and have a barnyard smell. It's neither as foul nor as fresh as some cigars. Instead, it smells more like that sensation would get used for a cologne.
Hmm. Eighty-eight. I don't know what the cologne sensation is. He must have been spraying himself with Michael Jordan or something.
He was at the mall earlier that day and he got right in the face. Maybe he feels like it's infused. Would you like to try? Maybe he feels like it's infused.
Booty? You said 87. Oh, did he? I'm sorry, I didn't hear him.
Next clue, the first two Atabe Black Delirious, it sounds like it's like a comedy show. Next Saturday at the, somewhere, the Atabe Black Delirious comedy show. Eddie Murphy's Delirious. Starts as if they are trying to mimic a Cuban cigar.
Oh! There's a dense, semi-sweet wood and tobacco flavor, but no real pepper. And it's plugged. Just a compact mixture of woods, caramel, and sugar around medium full.
The third cigar has a deeper wood flavor, a lot less sweetness, but more irritation due to some of the rye whiskey flavors, which also bring out the toastiness. Can you please not interrupt when I'm reading the clue? I apologize. It's distracting for Boots.
He has a hard enough trouble counting. 35. You know, the description to me sounds like a 1. Okay.
Rye whiskey, first of all, let me ask you, how many people in this room drink rye whiskey? Right, nobody in the world likes rye fucking whiskey. That is the worst whiskey of all time. Interesting.
Yeah, I'm sticking at 87. He said it had barnyard flavors, I've never eaten a barnyard either. He's probably doing this review in his barn. Charlie's got a barn now.
Yeah. Nice. He'd get that magnificent white jumpsuit he wears dirty that way. Yeah.
You mean jumpsuit? Sweatsuit. Sweatsuit, yeah. Sweatsuit.
Sorry. He was fancy. I was trying to make him sound, you know. Yeah.
Did you give a score? Yeah. Yeah, he said 30. I'm having my own show over here.
Yeah, what's going on over here? We got a lot of time to go. That's okay. It is what it is.
Just let it happen. There's more sharpness, third clue. There's more sharpness, but there's more of everything else, too. The nuttiness is the star of the show, ranging from a generic nuttiness On the third cigar, a softer macadamia nut on the first, and the second third, a distinct crushed peanut flavor, like the peanuts that are included in a McDonald's sundae.
Oh my God. Wow. For the five minutes it is present, the crushed peanut flavor is remarkably lifelike, tasting as if I actually just had those peanuts as opposed to reminding me of those peanuts. It's because you did, Charlie.
You're eating the ice cream from McDonald's right now. I don't think he is. Does anybody specifically remember a flavor of anything that they've ever eaten? Yes.
" Mm-hmm. The only flavor I could ever pick out is Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. We know how you feel about the Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. We know how you feel about those with the Cuadados and everything.
Yeah, with the Cuadados. Yeah. We got final thoughts after this one? Yes.
Of course. No, I've eliminated that part of the game. It's the mini game. Mini game.
Is this the last one or no? That was the last clue. There is a final thought. Okay.
But there's only one cigar we're doing today. That's the mini part. 65. I can't move from where I'm at because I know Charlie is going to say this is a great cigar because it's an Atabe.
Okay. And do they do, how much advertisement is in their stuff with Atabe? I don't know. That's David Garofalo distributes for it though.
I don't think it's for it, though. Oh, okay, so yeah, so 87. Okay, I already said 65. I would just, you were looking at something, I didn't know if you had something else to say.
After multiple reviews plagued by obvious construction issues, I was perhaps happier with this cigar's construction than I was with the flavor. However, it's not the right way to look at the Atabe Black Delirious. For a cigar that costs this much, construction should be an afterthought, and it should, and it mostly was. The flavor was impressive in so many ways.
Overall, it was very good to great. It's difficult to pick a singular high mark, but the flavor right before the transition to the second third was probably the absolute best. But I'm probably more impressed with how the flavors lope a point. The latter half of the second third was my least favorite, just too sharp in comparison to the rest of the cigar.
Though even that was enjoyable. Even more impressive, the final third reversed the sharpness. It's a sharpness and prevented a smoother, yet still quite full flavor. Yeah, they must be like the number one or number two advertiser.
Advertisers do not affect the voting there. They're not. I'm going to go 90. Have you smoked this ago?
No. I'll tell you, I had a baby like flurries. Have you smoked it? Me?
I can't afford those. $45 a cigar. 87. Michael wins a 91.
Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. What do we have for him, Johnny? An animated Black Delirious Cigar, previously smoked by Charlie Monado. Paul, show him what he's won.
I think that, honestly, what we should do for these shows is you can go all the way back since the dawn of time with Half Wheel, and you can always do an old one. You'll never run out. Yeah, no. Oh, you mean every single week, or every single episode.
Even if you did one every day. Yeah. If you go back, go all the way back. Yeah, because you've been doing it for how long?
And start reviewing all the old things. Yeah. Yeah. There you go.
Oh, because they keep adding new ones, too. Yeah. All right. You're never going to catch up.
Right. Unless they just stop. Can you imagine reaching-- Because we're bad for the industry. Can you imagine reaching the point where it's like, you've done all of them.
We've done all of them. Hey, Charlie, we need more info here. Like, work harder, Charlie. Yeah.
Work harder. All right, I have a little bit of Thanksgiving trivia game. Okay. Oh.
That's fine. All right. Great. The first Thanksgiving lasted how long?
Was that before or after we killed the people we brought there? Yeah, it was the first Thanksgiving. It was the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians. It lasted three days.
Boots? That was pretty good. Yeah. I think it was only a day.
It was three days, that's very good. I'm smart. I slept in that class. Turkey wasn't the star of the first...
Shit was wild, bro. Turkey, what, yeah, they had a three-day, through a week-long food festival. M&M was hosting, you know. Turkey wasn't the first, wasn't the star of the first feast.
What was? Turkey was not the star of the first feast. I'm gonna say, it had to be a bird. I'm gonna say it was probably like a hen or something.
Boots? Do you think it was a chicken? He said hen, he specifically meant the female version of the chicken. Or is it chicken?
Chicken's a female one. It's just another word for chicken. Yeah. So you could say rooster if you'd like.
Yeah. Duck. Deer, fish, and wild birds. Yeah, that makes sense.
The TV dinner exists because of Thanksgiving in 1953. There's no way to make this a question. In 1953, Swanson overestimated demand, it was left with 260 tons of leftover turkey, their solution, freeze it in trays, boom, TV dinners were born. Those guys are magical.
And then the microwave, and that was where you came into play in Kmart. Ben Franklin wanted what to be our national bird? The turkey. Yeah, I'm guessing that's the topic of this.
He said the bald eagle had bad moral character and the turkey was more respectable. Clearly, nobody listened to him. Could you imagine if it was our bird, this fucking bird just running around? This fat thing.
Yeah. Can't shoot 'em 'cause it's a national bird, they're just everywhere. Yeah. Really would've fucked up our Thanksgiving.
Yeah, the majestic eagles. Right, we'd be eating bald eagles. We'd be eating bald eagles. Yeah, this majestic eagle flying through the air with these huge talons was weaker.
I'm glad they went bald eagles. Than the turkey. I'm not gonna lie. Bald eagles, you see that thing in- It's impressive.
Yeah, it's like, okay. Yeah. Not the turkey. No.
Americans eat how much turkey on Thanksgiving? As a whole, as a country? Yes, as a number of, number of birds. Number of birds.
How many turkeys do we eat on Thanksgiving? Dun, dun, dun. I would say... Just in America.
We don't have any records from the food... Foods I want you to go first. Food selectors. 300 million.
300 million? Okay, Michael. I'm going to say, that's a good, that was a good, good line, I think, I'm going to say, 250 million. 46 million turkeys.
That's it? That's it. There must be a lot of ham eaters for Thanksgiving. A lot of people skip out on the turkey.
A lot of people skip out on the turkey. Are they counting the ones that get given away, or just the bought ones? It says eat. Okay.
Okay. He's so upset with how people get their information. Where do they get this data from? Where do they get the information from?
Yeah. What is the biggest Thanksgiving travel day? The day before Wednesday. Boots?
The day after. It's actually Sunday. Everyone goes home usually hungover and filled with a regret and pie. Because not everybody travels in on the same day, but everybody goes home on the same day.
Got it. All right. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade originally used what? I'm sorry, can you be more specific?
Well, this one, they originally used live animals. Oh, okay. For the balloons. Yeah, they would make them balloons.
They would take the live animals, and they would put strings on them. Nice. And then they would put them up in the air. Perfect.
Yeah. No dummy, they would walk around with the live animals. Oh, so was this John Smith and Pocahontas? Yes, they had lions, camels, elephants straight from the Central Park Zoo.
Nice. Balloons didn't show up until 1927. What famous Christmas song was originally a Thanksgiving song but then stolen by Christmas? But baby, it's cold outside.
That one we're not allowed to sing anymore. I love that song. Boats? I'm sure there's gotta be one about food, I don't know.
- Jingle Bells. - Really? - Yes. - How did it originally go?
- Thanksgiving Church Service in the 1850s Christmas stole it. - Did it always say Jingle Bells? - Yes. - They have to pay reparations for Thanksgiving.
- Black Friday is the busiest day for what industry? - Retail. - Are you saying more specific than retail, or we can just be vague? Be vague.
You could be talking about coffee. No, you can. Go ahead. I would guess gas.
I said retail. Plumbers. Shitter is full. Too much food, too many people home, destruction.
The shitter is full. Nice. Okay, and a little bit of trivia. " Oh, my God.
That's okay, and the answer is no, you can't. " It's a cooker. Are you? Yeah.
I was going in the oven. We're deep fryers. I'm not surprised. Have you ever had one?
A deep fried? Yes. It's phenomenal. Mm-hmm.
I'm sure it is. Okay. All right. This has been episode 418 of the Cigar Hustler Podcast.
I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving as this airs on Friday. So, yes. A bing bong. Bye-bye.
A bing bong. com, the churelli comes in black, bold, clean, and built for battle, available in multiple sizes for warriors of every shape and strength, and remember, the actual image does not dance or move, but it definitely makes a statement. com before they're gone!
