ACHP 564 BDP Once Around The Bridge w/ Matt Booth

Episode Summary
Room 101 founder Matt Booth takes over the host's chair for episode 564 of A Cigar Hustler's Podcast, joined by Mike "BDP" Palmer in full Fourth of July overalls and Mike S. behind the board. The first half is classic Cigar Hustler detour territory: listener comments on tobacco-sniffing dogs (including a listener's research showing a U.S./Canada tobacco-detection dog program was funded and then quietly folded), international cigar excise taxes in New Zealand and Australia running roughly $1.15–$1.30 USD per cigar gram, LeBron James leaving the Lakers and whether the move is about another ring or the money, Joby Aviation's air-taxi joint venture with Toyota, Sam's Club's Americana Sundae, and a Palm Coast, Florida contractor arrested for taking $40,000 in renovation money and spending it on signed baseball cards.
In cigar news, the guys cover Scandinavian Tobacco Group's new Mr. Punch by Punch — an Ecuadorian Sumatra–wrapped, Jalapa seco-bound, Nicaraguan-filler regular production line made at STG Estelí, with tasting notes of wood, cream and spice — which sparks a long, very Matt Booth riff on the Punch and Judy puppet origins of the brand's mascot and whether a cigar company can keep a domestic-violence puppet as its face. They then dig into the Montecristo Espada Conquistador from Altadis USA, an all-Nicaraguan blend (Jalapa wrapper, Ometepe binder, Condega and Estelí fillers) made by Plasencia in Estelí, and the retailer politics of it landing at Casa de Montecristo's own online store before other shops — including sister retailer JR Cigar — and what that means for small brick-and-mortars. Finally, Ohio's annual cigar tax adjustment bumps the per-cigar cap from 65 to 67 cents, prompting a running joke about the tax on the tax and the fee on the fee.
The episode closes with "What's the Score?", the show's guessing game built around Half-wheel reviews. The cigar is Charlie Minato's review of the Espinosa 601 Blue 20th Anniversary — a 6 3/4 x 56 box-pressed Nicaraguan puro with a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, made at La Zona. Clues point to a rich, smooth, remarkably consistent smoke with wood, leather, earth, cream and pepper, held back only by a lack of evolution and occasional combustion touch-ups. Booth and Palmer bounce between 87, 88 and 89; the final score is 89. Booth also plugs his upcoming appearances: Club Humidor in San Antonio on the Fourth of July and Creekside in Ohio on July 9.

On today's show: "Hey, coach, I'm out. Forget the robot cars. I'm flying. What's more American than Sam's Club?
" Question mark. Then in cigars, the inflection was off. It felt so much like a statement when I was saying it, though. Then in Cigars, We're Getting Punchy Back, Another Monty Cigar, and Ohio Gets Their Two Cents?
No, that's exclamation. My inflections are completely off. That's okay. You're doing great.
Then it tightens education of what's the score. But first, Mikey, how do we get some of that CH Pod swag? Well, thank you, Matt. Thank you for asking.

If we switch it to CHPod, are we still going to do the 10% off paying for the whole thing? Of course, of course, we save more money, we save more money, everybody save money, we're all about the money saved. I feel like CHPod swag is kind of a continuous theme.
It is. I feel like every time I've done this, there's this mention of CHPod swag. Yes. So I feel like we couldn't mention it enough.
Correct. Basically. So we need to make sure they understand, Mikey, how do they get some of that CHPod swag. com and check out the CHPod swag.
There's a new one that's about to drop. There's a new shirt that is about to drop. Is there a drop? Yes.
Is there any, like, foreshadowing of this? I can give you some foreshadowing. Actually, go ahead. Give us some foreshadowing, Palmer.
Tell us. Say what you say. Oh, you went the wrong way. You went the wrong way.
Which apparently is very popular. Yes. Oh, is that a thing? " Oh, you say it.
I say it, yes. Oh, it's your thing. Yes. And now it's a piece of CH-Pod swag.
Correct. That is correct. Oh, my gracious. Isn't that...
Look at that. The cohesive nature of the spoken word and the transactable merchandise? Yeah, right there, right there. Apparel.
I love that. It's apparel. CH Pot Swag. Yes.
Let's not, you know, it's CH Pot Swag. That's correct. Yeah. Now for the news.
Wait, hold on. Wait, no, is it not time? Wait, wait, wait. Comments, I gotta guess.
Hold on, relax, relax. Comments, comments, comments. He's still doing his bit. Oh, yeah, okay.
Slow it down, okay? We know your cigars are AIDS-free. Aids-free, Aids-free. What?
Aids-free cigars. Aids-free cigars. And Dolphin Safe. And Dolphin Safe.
Who comes up with that shit? Oh, yeah. Do you remember that? Yeah.
That was just off the rip. That was fantastic. That was great. We say it all the time.
It felt right. It was hilarious. Dude. It was hilarious.
I want to go into more environmental initiatives. I like when you went from the Aids to the Dolphin Safe. Yeah. Just covering everything at that point.
Yeah. Yep. They cut a wide swath, as the farmers would say. Yes.
So, at Cigar Smoking Arborists, sorry, I foresee a Blondhound mask for Phil sniffing out the truth. Uh, what truth did he, what, what, what, what, what? It had to be the last show, I don't know. Oh, he was gonna find something out, I forget what it was.
Ah. Yes, indeed you will. Uh, was it the, the dog stuff? Yes, okay.
The dog stuff? What, if the, uh, dogs and military could sniff tobacco. Ah, yes, indeed. Indeed.
You were in the military, Mr. Booth. I was, Matt. Can the dogs in the military sniff for tobacco?
I mean, I don't like having dogs sniff on any of my packages. Yeah. I understand. Any of my packages.
Whether they have tobacco or otherwise, I prefer no dogs sniffing. Matt was on Team Freedom. He wasn't on Team Arrested. There we go.
You know what I mean? Good point. Thank you. You were an actual soldier where Phil was a- Master at Arms.
I don't know, like a glorified cruise director on the land. Pretty much, yeah, a Navy guy that never saw a boat. Right, a Navy guy that never got on a boat. That's correct.
He saw them as they left. Correct. He was a landlocked seaman. Yes.
Yes. Interesting. Which is the name of his new movie. Landlocked Seaman.
Landlocked Seaman. Amazing. A maritime adventure. Yes.
You're texting? What are you texting? No. Oh, he's taking pictures and videos.
Mike's taking pictures of the setup, man. It's exciting to be a part of it. He wants to copy it in his studio. Yeah.
The haphazard way where you put the wires everywhere so you can't walk through the roof. David Hasselhoffman4725 said, "You missed the Hasselhoffman's birthday. I forgive you. Listen, we record the day before.
So, today, as we're recording, is officially your birthday. " Now, you're going to be seeing this late. So, happy belated birthday. I don't know what else to tell you, but I covered your day.
I just messaged you today, alright? This is the movie magic, alright? So calm your tits. Now for the news!
No! No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, man. He's getting bored over there, quick. No, no, it's fine, I'm excited about that.
Yeah, me too, me too. I'm not even reading ahead, I'm gonna let it surprise me. There you go. Oh, that's the best way.
Off the cuff. Go pre-read. Off the cuff. It drives him crazy.
Nobody likes to pre-read. S. and Canada spent a ton of money on a pilot program to train dogs on tobacco detection. It failed miserably and was folded.
More than likely, the dog alerted to a different smell, like drugs or money, and the cigars found were by happenstance. Yeah, that's probably the case when it comes to this Canadian... You have to get a fresh dog. Start with the tobacco, then go drugs and money.
" He added a Hasselhoffman back, yeah, you're gonna have to elaborate on that one for me, you have to talk to me like I'm a five-year-old, okay? And that's how I'll figure out what that means, Hasselhoffman back. Hmm. S.
15 per cigar gram. Ouch. This also includes sales tax. Yes, that's right.
The import excise tax has a tax. We're taxing the tax. You got to have a tax tax, you got to have a key tax. Yeah, yeah.
Makes sense. That was our first international comment. You know, he actually reached out to me and I sent him the site to look at and play with. 15 US per gram.
Yeah. And wait. Yep. Yeah.
That's crazy. That's wild. Yeah. There are several places that they weigh the product and somehow deduce, you know, the tax.
There's that one that would be really good there, then. Uh, yeah. That's true. You can't say that, but you have to be nice.
I knew you would know, though. Yeah. I know exactly who you're talking about. Yes.
I'm not allowed to say. However, you know. Well, you could say, but let's just not. Let's just not.
Okay. 30 per cigar gram. So there you go. That's a shout out to my guy Dave Burke, Cigar Jukebox, who pays the premium.
Oh yeah, man. Cigar Jukebox. Dave, that's my man. I heart BDP, the fake account for Mike Palmer.
It's not me. It's definitely you. It's not me. You're going to say lovely things about your outfit today, I'm sure.
This show will fall apart without BDP. We shall see what happens when BDP takes a holiday. I'm not here for the next two days. There's an account, iHeartBDP?
Yes. Amazing. It is new recently, and it loves me. It's recently appeared.
Fuck. I need to get more active in this chattosphere. Yes. There's one that's Mikey's mom.
She comments on the show, too. Yeah, we call her. Yes. Sharon.
Yeah. We could say that it's my mother. She hasn't commented in a while. And her name is Ruckus Unchained.
That's her handle. And the last one for today is going to be: At the Buzzinator 19, did Triple G find the cookie in the garbage? Oh. Because you got a cookie too.
No, because you got you a cookie. Oh, oh. You know, he was supposed to bring one today, and he has not. That didn't happen?
Nope. I even told him he didn't have to. He goes, "No, no. I insist.
Cookies every day. " Oh, it's a little confused. Last Friday, he got cookies for everybody upstairs, but me. Yeah, I didn't get one.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. How does this happen? He said he thought I wasn't here, but I'd already seen him that day. They keep me down here, and then I go upstairs periodically.
First of all, this isn't a they keep you down here. It's not a dungeon. I like being down here. You choose to be down here.
It's quiet and stuff making phone calls and things, but it sounds better if I say you keep me down here. No, because I don't keep you anywhere. I actually prefer you up there with me working with me. Too busy.
Yeah. Too busy up there. You and Steve laughing. You're yelling at Claude.
Yeah. Greg's trying to figure out what tobacco is. This is insane. I am going to say this last comment because it is Matt Booth is mentioned in it, ironically enough.
Wow. Yeah. Yeah. At Texas Southpaw 4202 says, "After the Arby story, I now know why Matt Booth advertises that his cigars are AIDS-free.
" Right. So there you go. Look, man, I'm just trying to bring the information to the people. Right.
To Make them feel confident in their purchase and understand that we are looking at this prismatically. Right. There is no issue that does not impact cigar making, nor an issue that cigar making does not impact if you allow it to be so in your mind. It's a practical approach.
I get it. I get it. Or that. Yeah.
Yeah. AIDS-free. If you want to hear your comment read aloud on the show, just simply comment below. Tomorrow will be the last day to enter to win the Postana Wings Hazars hat.
It is something that you cannot purchase. It was acquired only at PCA for media people as well as retailers. So, if you want the opportunity, just comment below and you'll be answered to win. Could be any of you.
Maybe iHeartBDP. Who knows? I'll just have to hand it to him. It's not mine.
He hates when people like me. He hates when people like me. Wow. He likes when they say bad things about me.
He doesn't like it when they say nice things. There's a dynamic afoot here. Yes. I'm noticing.
Indeed. Indeed. Okay. Oh, can I do the thing?
Yes. Oh, shit. Now the news. There you go.
Get your remote. Okay, hold on. I got the thing. LeBron James will return for an unprecedented 24th season in the NBA, but it won't be with the LA Lakers.
James has informed the Lakers the franchise can move on without him because he will play elsewhere. Yes. Do we know where? Well, if we read further.
Oh, is there a thing? Well, hold on. Is that a thing? You can do that?
You can just go, I'm done. Well, I think that the way that his contract is that he's at the point or something like that? Oh, 24 years and then like... No, no.
He hasn't been there for 24 years. Oh, not that particular one. No, yeah. He had a contract and I think that it's expiring and he's not extending or anything like that.
Oh, okay. So it's not like he's got three years left. He's just going, eh, I'm done. No, I don't think so.
Gotcha. I mean, do you want him to read on? Do you want me to tell you what I know? No, no, he can read on.
There's more information. I had pulled this. I think there's information here. I feel like there's information.
Yes, you guys could Sporty and I could just smoke and drink over there, but I'm trying to fill in now. Go ahead, please. Read the thing. See, this is what happens when you remove him from his chair.
He feels like he needs to... I just... there's a whole screen of it. Yeah, yeah.
Go ahead. LeBron James finishes his Lakers career ranked in the top 10 in franchise history in points, assists, field goals, and three-pointers, pick six. " Can you do his voice? I don't know how to do it.
Okay, never mind. How do I do that? I don't know. I don't watch it again.
Just make something up. We don't know. He doesn't really have a distinct voice, LeBron. No.
He doesn't, does he? No. If he did, I'd probably know. Yeah.
Yeah. It's not like Tyson or something like that. After taking time to decompress and undergo some self-assessment, James came to the conclusion that he wanted to continue playing meaningful, competitive basketball. A source familiar with James thinking told SBN, "Daves McMiniman, James has instructed Agent Rich Paul to talk to everyone around the league who is interested and come back to him with what the options are so he can make his decision," the source says.
He's not kind of curious. He's like, "Hey, fuck this Laker bit. " Right, exactly. Is this his last year, Mikey?
Is he getting there at that age? Okay, so here's what I think. I honestly think that that's not the case. My son is my news source when it comes to basketball.
Well, you really don't read anything, do you? No. Pick six. No, I don't even know.
I can't read. I'm unedumacated. So I think that what is happening with LeBron James He wants another ring. He wants a championship.
He doesn't care about... he wants a ring? The guy is worth half a billion dollars at least, if not more. Does he not have a ring of any kind?
He does. Oh, he has one. He wants more. But I think he wants another one.
That's what I think is what's going on. You should have Room 101 make him a ring, bro. Right? com?
Los Angeles? There you go. Made in the USA? 100, Room 100.
Oh, that's right. No, it's 102. No, you want to be before. You don't want to be the one if you come after.
Oh my God. You want to be before they started. Well, listen, but the jewelry thing is not the cigar thing. No.
Oh, so it's a different industry. So you can still use it? That's correct. Oh, well then, please, continue.
Okay. For the love of God, let them pitch LeBron James for a ring. Sources told... You can't read over there, be quiet.
Shrania? What is that? What does it say? Shran...
Shrania? You just have to be close. m. Eastern Standard Time.
I also heard the Timberwolves Timberwolves Is that who they are? The Minnesota It's two teams I'm not a sport either, I don't know It's a hybridized team You'll learn about that later So the Minnesota Timberwolves have Anthony Edwards, Ant-Man I like his movies I like Rudd, he's funny So he could go well there, I think Where he understands that he's no longer he's no longer the guy he's the assistant like he's the supporting cast right like he's powerful yeah he's 45 years old or something i don't you know i don't know a lot about him but i don't see him being the backup guy uh it happens progressively over time like oh it happens everybody yeah is that just how that works yeah yeah realistically yeah i never knew yeah the future's here are we Are we still on James? What are we doing? We're still on James.
Oh, we're still on James. So Shaq came to the Heat to support Wade when Wade was young at his time, right? Yeah. And then as Wade got older, then LeBron joined, right?
And, like, Wade is no longer the guy. He was supposed to be Shaq. Like, that's how it kind of operates, right? So you need that veteran.
Right. And if he's a, you know, veteran superstar. Even better. Yeah, so I think that that, from what I'm understanding from what my son is saying, that this is about him trying to get another ring.
If not, I just go back to Cleveland and I take one more year there and I'm done. I set sail as a Cavalier. That's where he started. Oh.
Oh, so it'll be in and out the same way. Uh, well, yeah, yeah. You think he would go there if they paid, if they weren't the highest? He's, I believe he's already stated he does not care about the money.
Well, that's what you say. It's always about the money. Yeah, that's what you say. You always say it's not about the money, but it's about the money.
I mean, he's worth a ridiculous amount of money. It's never enough. Okay, well, do you know who Tom Brady is? Yeah, I know who Tom Brady is.
You want to know one of the reasons why he's so great? He's in like Hertz rental car commercials. Yeah, he's a Hertz rental car guy? Because he made all the wide receivers spend summers at his home and they train there by themselves?
No. He did do that, I read that the other day. Yeah, we did, maybe, but no. How do you guys know all this shit about these jocks, man?
I have to read a lot of stuff for the shows. Oh, wow. You know, one of the big things that he did was he took a pay cut to make sure that there was enough people around him so that he had a solid team. But we're not talking about him.
No, but we're talking about the fact that it's always about the money, correct? That was the topic of discussion? Yes, but did he say-- But, bro, that was an investment into more money. Right.
He took a little debit to have the right people around him because the success of the team meant he would make more. Correct. Right, he would make it on the back end. Which could be the exact same scenario here.
LeBron goes to a team that's already kind of capped out money-wise, take a small check, so he can be that final piece to push them over to a championship. So he can further solidify legacy. We need a sneaker deal, bro. That's what you need for CH Pod Swag.
Who do you think is going to do it? Pump? Um, Skechers. Skechers?
Yeah. Okay. Yeah, Skechers. That's cool.
I just kicked the camera, did the camera over just to lay? We have a 45 to 55 demographic. With the thick soles, you're going to do it with a BDP shoes for the old people? Right.
Walkers? Like the Hoka. Yeah, yeah. The Hoka.
Okay, you can move on now. The future is here. The race to bring air travel to the sky is... Wait, okay.
The race to bring air travel to the sky? Yes. Okay. We're going with it.
Keep going. We're going with it. The race to bring air travel to the sky is heating up as Santa Cruz-based Joby Aviation, And Toyota launch a joint venture to commercially produce air taxis. Oh, nice.
The company said in a news release Tuesday, they will work together on productivity, quality, and cost, and move forward mass production of Joby's electric vertical takeoff aircraft. Joby and Toyota were first linked when Toyota made a nearly $400 million investment in the company in 2020. " The future mobility society. Joby, all electric vertical takeoff vehicles are designed to hold four passengers and a pilot and can travel at up to 200 miles per hour.
The vehicle uses six tilting propellers to achieve vertical takeoff, sounds dangerous as fuck, before switching to forward flight. In February, Joby announced a partnership with Uber to start service in the United Arab Emirates, tested over there first, this year bringing on demand air taxi rides to the country. S. after completion of its final stage of Federal Aviation Administration testing.
Prior to its full FAA certification, Joby is hoping to launch early flight operations later this year as part of a White House program that will bring flights to several states, including New York, Texas, and Arizona. This sounds lovely. It sounds actually quite, uh, pretty dope and terrifying. I cannot wait.
Yes, I cannot wait. 200 miles an hour and get me to work in like five seconds? Uber, Uber, bro. Flights in California will not begin until after obtaining FAA certification.
The 3055, the year 3055. Yeah, they won't let them do it there. Well, you know, we got to go through the regulation and then regulate the regulators. They look like a giant drone.
Have you seen this new, this Blade app? Have you seen Blade? Blade? No, I'm not familiar.
It's basically helicopter Uber. Really? It's not everywhere, but you can take it like from JFK into the city. You would know.
So you've been leasing your helicopters, is what you're saying? No, no, no, no, no, no. I don't, I don't. The gold helicopter?
I cannot lease my 22-karat gold, uh, Muammar Qaddafi, uh, helicopter. Okay. Yeah, good. I'm so happy he remembers exactly what we call it.
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah, man, so Blade is like a helicopter Uber. Oh.
Basically. Do you have to get picked up at an airport, or can they, like, land out back? Uh, I want to, there are specific spots, like, heli pads for them. Right, right, okay.
I believe. How dope would it be if you could just put it down there? Yeah, put it down back there. Nice.
Crush one of those four cars. Maybe that's what Joby will do. That's like some Back to the Future 2 shit, man. Joby, it's like a Harrier jet, man.
It seems like they go up and then they can tilt. It looks like a giant drone. It's got the things on it, and then they tilt up, and then it takes off, and then they turn forward, and yep, just like that one plane that the Air Force has. I love this.
The Harrier. No, the Harrier is the jet. That's a jet. That's a jet.
The Air Force has a plane with two propellers on its side. It was in one of the Transformers movies. One of the Transformers movies. Transformers?
Same idea, but they only had two propellers, one on either side. But yeah, this is much smaller and pretty cool. It's in the thumbnail for the show. Oh, I saw Call of Duty: Black Ops.
There's one with like six. We need to figure out what the root of this naming convention is with Joby. Who's Joby? Joby?
There's an acronym? Yeah, probably. Joby? Has some sneaky underlining.
Is it J-O-B-E? J-O-B-Y. Joby. Joby.
Joby, bro. Hmm. If you turned your mic slightly more towards your mouth, that'd probably be better. Well, I'm limited with the...
There's not a lot of real estate, fabric real estate. You can make this work. There's a lot of flesh real estate from what I'm saying. A little twist, oh, there you go, there you go.
Oh, now it tickles. A lot of landscape. Now it tickles. Now it tickles.
A manscape. Yes. Yeah. Well, we're...
That's right. I mean, you just got me all flustered. The robot cars aren't working out, so we might as well fly now. I thought those were working out.
No, they just recalled all of them because they can't, if there's no power and the street lights go out, they just stop, the stop lights and stuff. Now, they can't go to construction sites, they can't do roads that are washed out, they don't know what to do. The Waymo ones. Oh, yeah, the Waymo ones.
Dude, but when Musk takes the field on that, it's a wrap. It's a wrap. Like, they've already seen the gold taxis have popped up. Yeah, I've seen one in Orlando.
There's one in Orlando, yes. Is there just the one in Orlando? I don't know. I believe so.
Yes. Yes. You should live in Central or West Florida, sir. Yes.
You. Do I do the thing? No, no. He wants you to move into Central or West Florida.
Oh, yeah. We can just drive down south. You know what I mean? You don't have to live in the chaos.
You can take a Joby. 200 miles an hour. I could take a Joby, bro. I could be there in 45 minutes.
Yeah. Or the train, the train runs from here to Miami. Or you can play, oh yeah, remember the death toll? The right line.
That keeps climbing, by the way. Of course. Well, not for people inside the train. Correct.
So you'll be okay. Yet. Yet. Yet.
We'll see. Okay. All right, moving on. What's more American than apple pie?
Sam's Club, new dessert, that's what the membership store is gearing up for the 4th of July, and Celebration of America's 250th birthday with a new dessert. The American Sunday takes apple pie a la mode to a whole new level. The Sunday features vanilla frozen yogurt with real pieces of Sam's members, Mark Honeycrisp, Apple Latisse pie? Lattice.
Lattice? What's Lattice? Lattice is that crisscross pattern they put over the top, like the white things you can get to put up around your head. Oh yeah, that's what I was saying.
Lattice for the house. Yeah, yeah, same idea. This is the thing. They're a little twistology here.
Lattice pie and is finished off with a healthy dollop, a dollop of whipped topping. S. through the end of July. The good news is that even though the Sunday will only be around for a short period of time, the price is equally small.
The Sunday will cost less than two American dollars. America. m. Pokemon drop that is coming, as I am now aware of through my song.
Your boy will be there ready. Oh, you could get one. That's right. Mostly, the pie is award-winning.
Is it? It's famous, yeah. I cut that out of the article so we can talk about it. Oh.
It's got lattice game, though. The lattice game is strong. Yeah, the crust is criss-crust on the top. Yeah.
Mm-hmm. Are you going to go to Sam's and get the pie? Well, I mean, you're going to be there July 15th? I'm going to be there July 15th.
I might have to get the pie. So things go sideways. If you get the Pokemon, you don't get the Pokemon, it's still a dub if you get the pie. I'm going to cop the drop and the lattice.
There you go. I'm going to get both. Why not? Yeah.
Oh, there's one just on the other side of the bridge? Limit two per customer. Oh, no, that's a, they're, no, there's Sam's over there. Yep.
Nice. It's only at Sam's, I hear. Only at Sam's. Only at Sam's.
Right. Only at Sam's, bro. Same place, isn't it, where that's the hot dog thing too, right? That's Costco.
Oh, is that Costco? Get it right. Well, now they are competing with the apple pie a la mode. They have thrown their hat into the ring.
But nobody, nobody can compete with the Costco Glizzy. Like that is a tried-and-true standard, unfuck-with-a-bolt. I agree. Absolutely.
And that makes me want one. Wait, is it time? Do I do a thing? Yes.
A Palm Coast couple wired $40,000 to a contractor for home renovations, oh dear, that were supposed to be finished in three months. Detectives say the work barely started, and the money went elsewhere, including signed baseball No card purchases, probably some Pokemon drops, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office said Michael Struhar, 43 of Palm Coast, owner of Sunshine State Contractor Services, signed an agreement with the homeowners in December of 2025 to do work on their home. Investigators say that Struhar showed up once, removed and painted a single wall, then never returned. The couple's calls and...
Never returned the couple's calls? Well, I don't know because here there's a period he never returned the couple's calls and texts went unanswered and a certified letter demanding refund was ignored the agency said after the victims reported the case to the FCSO in April the general assignment unit began investigating record showing record showed that within days of the wire transfer the account reflected about eleven thousand five hundred in cash and debit withdrawals and more than thirty three thousand five hundred in sell payments with no evidence the The funds were ever used to buy materials for the Palm Coast job, according to the sheriff's office. Detectives also found reoccurring charges to an online auction site where Struhar allegedly collected signed baseball cards. By the end of December, the account was negative, stayed there for almost months afterwards, a deputy said, until my man found another couple to, air quotes, remodel their bathroom, and then he was back up and running.
Struhar's ex-wife told detectives she'd been contacted by unpaid subcontractors and said, "Struhar, brush off the certified letter texting her," air quotes, "all good, already taken care of," end quote. The state attorney's office approved an arrest warrant for grand theft over $20,000 with bonds set at 50 G's. Struhar was arrested Friday and later released on bond. " This happens too often.
It's tragically a tale commonly told. Do people know not to pay that much in advance? Apparently not. Well, maybe for the size of the job, that was a realistic deposit.
You never know. Yeah. He's 80,000 and then he's 14. He'll pay half now, half a day.
Damn, man. Wild, wild. So, have you ever had anything done fancily in your house or something, in your McMansion up in Washington? I have.
I have, and I've actually had the great pleasure of working with people from the trades that actually didn't fuck me over. Isn't that great? Oh, that's great. I've actually been honest transactions and work exchange, you know, service exchange for the cheddar and so on.
It's actually worked out for me so far. How did you find these people? Through friends. So not Facebook Marketplace?
No, sir. Not Craigslist? No, I did not. Okay.
What was the other one? Need your bathroom repaired? Call me. Give us a call now!
And his logo is him on a baseball card? Damn, I wonder if he got Pete Rose's rookie though. We should find out. We should find out what cards he bought.
I wonder what he bought, yeah. Probably in the evidence locker at the police department. When did this go down? I don't know.
Recently? Recently. If this is recent, it was probably basketball, like NBA Finals type stuff, you know what I mean? Could be, could be FIFA.
Some Wembeys, a couple Wembe cards, now they're not worth as much, you know? Oh. Yeah, that was when- So he not only stole the money, he made a bad investment. Correct.
Damn. I got news for you that, you know, that guy is probably the guy that continuously makes bad investments. I would imagine. Yeah.
You know? But somehow. You think he thought, I'll buy a couple of cards, I'll flip 'em? Yeah.
I'll make enough money. And I'll be good, yeah. And I'll be good, and I'll get the job done. And then- And then no.
Right. Nobody wants a Pete Rose card anymore. Damn. Hmm.
Wow. It was the only sports guy's name I could think of off the top of my head real quick. Pete Rose? Pete Rose, rookie career?
Pete Rose, bro. Pete Rose. You know who he is? Baseball?
Yeah. Way back? Never made the Hall of Fame because he was a gambler? I just don't know what they say.
Yeah, but they've kind of forgiven him now, his cards are worth more again, I believe. Yeah, I believe you're correct. Well, but that's not the Hall of Fame forgiving him, that's just the people acknowledging that he was a stud. There's always a whisper that he might get in every time they do it and then it doesn't happen.
He should be acknowledged. He should be. Yeah, it's been enough time. He should be, bro.
He asked him to win. Right. And then he didn't win, I don't believe, did he? I don't know.
I don't follow baseball. I don't follow sports. Man, Stallone bet on himself and over the top. Don't forget.
He bet everything on himself and over the top. That's right. And when the hat went backwards, you knew he was all business. All business.
All in. Flip the switch. All in, baby. That's right.
Okay. Cigar News? Are you ready for Cigar News, Palmer? I'm ready for Cigar News, unless you have something to share.
I do not. It's Cigar News, my friend. Cigar News! A few cigar brands have mascots, but STG's Punch brand does.
Wait, wait. Yeah, I guess that makes sense. But STG's Punch brand does, and the company is celebrating the iconic character with a new cigar line called Mr. Punch.
Buy Punch cigars that will begin shipping to stores on July 1st. It was today. Yeah. Is that today?
Today. That starts shipping to stores today. Are we getting numbers, Michael? Yesterday.
It was yesterday. Oh, today's the second? Oh, it releases on the second. It releases tomorrow.
It releases tomorrow. Oh, right. Yesterday. I get confused with it.
Before. But recently. Yes. The line uses Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, a Seco binder from Nicaragua's Jalapa region, and Nicaraguan fillers, which, a press release says, offers tasting notes of wood, cream, and spice.
The cigars are made at STG's Esteli factory in Nicaragua. Boom. So, uh, have you ever met the Punch mascot? You, you were close with us.
I've, I've seen him about. Yeah. Yeah. He's an elusive, uh, gentleman.
You know who he is, Michael? What he's from? No. From the old Punch and Judy.
He was a puppet. What's a, what's the Punch and Judy? Punch and Judy was a TV show back when everything was black and white and he would punch Judy. Really?
They were, they were like marionette puppets. So, okay, so let me just, let me just regroup here real quick. cycle of violence so don't get ahead of yourself so first of all he was a puppet yes not a real person so we have no problem with puppets being on cigars well back then oh now you know like because you know we get mad about everything we get in an uproar I guess it's okay we're okay with we're okay punch gets a pass yes punch gets a pass it was an adult puppet does that make a difference okay an adult puppet yeah I mean what kind of puppet are we talking about and I think it was an adult themed show because he would This is a little puppet play here. And now we're condoning domestic violence.
Well, Judy's not on the cigars. Yeah. They broke up. They separated.
Yeah. Amical. She's running around now with Bozo the Clown. Dang.
Did the punch guy do hard time or what? No, there was no, no. No? She didn't press charges.
She didn't press charges? Oh, you know, he said he would change. I love him. This was back in the day.
So like when the police came, you're just like, hey, you know, you know what happens. You know what happens, you gotta get out of line. I asked for a sandwich, they give you the sandwich. Sometimes you gotta smack them around a little bit.
In the before times. Right, in the before times. Not acceptable now. We do not condone that type of violence.
No, not at all. No. So, perfectly fine. Back then?
I moved to have the punch person removed. The puppet's gotta go. Well, he's not a puppet anymore. He's embodied in some sort of gremlin-like leprechaun-type figure.
Yeah, a little statue-y. Terrifying, almost. Yeah, it is a little scary. It's a little disconcerting.
Yeah, if you had it in your house, and you came in at night, and the light hits him just right, he might shoot it. It'd be scary? Yeah, he's not very friendly looking. All I'm saying.
That's probably why Judy left him. Because he was ugly? Not the most attractive man. Sorry, you would like to read on.
Please. He's not that attractive. I mean, I'm not trying to, you know. He's not a looker.
Right, we're not body shaming the man by any means, no, not at all, but even though he's a little punchy, but yeah, really thank you for turning the air on, I'm getting cold, I was sweating over here, I didn't, I didn't think about, well maybe you should put on some overalls, I didn't think about the overalls of you going rogue over here, all right, please, yeah, there's full flow through on that, yeah, it's nice, yeah, there's, there's, yeah, it's, it's nice, I have a full, a full view over here, yeah, according to a press release, the big slapper is the biggest size that a We know it's going to be a hit, air quotes, end quote. Pop culture, he's been a hit, get it, he's gonna be a big hit. The character, a jester, or a punchinello, was inspired by the Punch and Judy pop culture. The character of a Jester, or a punchinello, was inspired by the Punch and Judy pop culture.
The character of a punchinello, was inspired by the Punch and Judy pop culture. The character of a punchinello was inspired by the Punch and Judy pop culture. And has been featured on both the Cuban and non-Cuban versions of the brand's packaging dating back to the mid-1800s. The Mr.
Punch by Punch Cigars is a regular production, full-time release. So if I find a vintage puppet, I can put it on and no one's gonna give me a hard time? Is that what you're saying? I guess.
You think they had to get permission to use them back in the, uh, 1900s? No, no. 1800s. We don't acknowledge trademarks.
S. Well, you don't, I mean, they say it was on... Okay. But I think it's on American cigars now, so they would have to, you would think.
Maybe that's expired. None of it was Cuban-based. But if it was Cuban-based... Well, it said it has appeared on Cuban cigars also.
Right. That's where it started. It did say that. And then we took it.
It's kind of like this country. I'm not saying we had to ask Cuba, but there was a TV show. Somebody had to own the TV show Punch and Judy. " No, no, do STG here, when they tried to do it.
So you're messing up the timeline a little bit, buddy. That's the problem, right? So, Cuba makes cigar, right? Okay, and they call it Punch.
" Right, okay, fair enough. Then they make them in America. And then eventually, like a hundred years later, the cigar is then replicated in the US. Punch guy is long gone.
Well, he's got family. No, he already lost to Cuba. He can't use Elvis Presley because of his daughter. What if this is like, you know, the great-great-great-grandson?
Right, exactly. Of Mr. Punchinello. Right.
Files a claim. That was my grandfather. He used to dress up like that and hit my grandmother. My great-great-grandfather.
He was a puppet? Great-great-great-grandfather. No, no. They took the puppet from a real-life man, I'm assuming.
The clown guy would come home and realize that he was fat, ugly, and miserable, hated his life, The man who hated his life, so he'd come home and tee off on his life, the slapper. I mean, they're pretty much embracing the whole "we're gonna beat somebody up" thing. So, pretty much, if you buy STG products, you're condoning domestic violence. Where do you sell your cigars, Mr.
Matt? Oh, look at this! And just like that, oh my god, oh my god. Now we'll get Justin on the phone.
See, see what happens, Matt? You gotta do your research before you get into bed with these people, my goodness. No, you're right, you're right. Oh my lord.
All right, well, I'll just walk. Room 101 Cigar, The Puncher. Fine, I'll just walk it all back. I guess it's not true.
Whatever. Wow, I'm glad you said it. Now I don't get in trouble. That was all in.
I know, 100%. Yeesh. The newest installment in Altadas USA's Monte Cristo Espada line has begun shipping with the first round of shipments of the Conquistador. Also domestic violence.
I love that name. Seemingly landing at Casa de Monte Cristo's online store ahead of other retailers. Whoops. The line is described...
That's really fucking smooth right there. The line is... I mean, I'm just reading the thing. You're just reading the news.
The line is described as a medium to full-bodied, all Nicaraguan blend, with a wrapper from Jalapa, a binder from the volcanic island of Ometepe, and fillers from Condega and Esteli. Plasencia is making the cigars at its factory in Esteli. Plasencia has made the previous releases in the Espada, By Monte Cristo Line, which includes the original line that debuted in 2014 and was notable for being the first all-Nicaraguan Monte Cristo release. Nice!
It was followed by the Estoke from 2015, the Oscuro from 2019, and the Signature from 2021. Casa de Monte Cristo and Altadas USA are both part of Tabacalera USA. The cigars have not yet gone on sale at JR Cigar, another retailer under the Tabacalera USA umbrella. So, to kind of give full context here, what we're talking about is you're talking about a brand that has its own retail position and also sells to other retailers and has decided to release this brand to its retailer.
Its own retailer. Right. Right. And it's not even both of its retailers.
It's just the one. Just the one. Right. So, there's like zero protection for small brick and mortars there at all.
Yes. Zero. R. Cigars is like the redhead stepchild of Altidus apparently.
Like, hey, what about us? We would like it too. Yeah, well, that's not nice. You get it after they do.
Yeah, no, no. One at a time. One at a time. One at a time, kids.
You get back in line. Yeah. How do you feel about that, Matt? An email sent to Altadas USA representatives regarding when the cigars will ship to other stores has not yet been returned.
Who sent the email? You sent the email? Half-wheel, Charlie. com, nobody answered my email.
We give Halfwheel all the credit they deserve, man, they do all the hard work. Understood. They do the heavy lifting, and then you guys just... And then we just take it from them.
So if you want real up-to-date news, go to Halfwheel, if you want it satired. Well, if you wait till the... I mean, ours is just a day later. Well, if you want to tread it apart and humorous, then come see us.
We're like the... we're the SNL of... There you go. Of Half-Wheels, this is the media division?
This is the weekly news. Yes, exactly. Daily. Daily, weekly news.
Daily, weekly. Yeah, the daily weekly. All right. And finally, can I, is this, are we good?
Yes. Or we want to chat about that more? We're always, I think, I think I kind of delivered that nicely, you know? I think.
Yeah. I, look, man, I, I have to commend every delivery you've performed on this show, man. Thank you. It's been fantastic.
It's been very nice. Thank you. Well, it's much, it's very easy, it's very easy when you two fine gentlemen are here in the room. Thanks, bro.
Thanks, bro. You're doing a great job with the switchy-switchy. Oh, look at you. Look at you.
Saying nice things about me. And finally, Ohio's annual cigar tax adjustment goes into effect today, with this year's change increasing the tax rate by two cents, from 65 cents to 67 cents per cigar. While Ohio taxes, while Ohio has a tax rate of 17% of a cigar's wholesale price, the state also has a statutory cap of 50 cents. However, by state law, the Ohio Tax Commissioner must also compute an annual tax adjustment factor to the cap.
This year that factor is 17 cents, 2 cents more than the previous rate of 15. The rate will be in effect until June 30th of 2027. Now it's time for the industry's... Oh my god.
Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on.
Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on.
Hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Hold on.
Hold on. I gotta put pauses in there. Yeah. So yeah, you do.
Yeah. Yeah. The rate will be in effect until June 30th, 2027, go. So there's a tax on top of the tax.
Tax on a tax. Did I read that right? Additional two cents. No, yeah, but it's capped at 50 or whatever, and then they throw an extra fee on top of that.
Yeah, the fee for the fee. There's the fee fee. The fee fee. The fee fee and the tax tax.
The tax tax and the fee fee. The fee fee and the tax tax, right. A penny for each one, so it's two cents. Like, I don't, you can't, you can't make this shit up.
No. It's just comical to me. You know? And they all get away with it on every avenue.
It had to be some sort of vote, I would imagine. Yeah, wait, wait, we gotta charge a fee for this. " Okay, just do it, I don't know how it works. Yeah, just do that one.
Yeah, just do that one. I choose A. You're not sure what it is. If we put, let me just get my abacus out here real quick.
Okay, if we just add an extra two cents on that, Ferrari, perfect. Yes, Ferraris for everyone. Yeah. Drinking Ferraris for, you know, the House of Representatives.
Joby Ferraris. Joby Ferraris. In Ohio, debuting first. Flying Ferrari.
The two-cent tax has resulted in flying cars. We are going to be the first. We have zero FAA regulations. Ohio state representatives have all bought their own Joby.
They've all bought their own Joby with the two-cent tax additional on top of the cap. It's capped, but we raised the price. Right. Right.
Do you think the FAA is going to clear those things? Because that's what they're waiting on in America. Yeah, 100%. That's why they started in the other country that has less regulations.
It goes back to the same thing. It goes back to the same thing every time. What's that? What is that, Matt?
Cheddar. That's right. It's all about the cheddar. Correct.
Correct. Correct. Correct. So, you know, just got to figure out who you got to pay.
And then, boom, we will have the Joby's. Joby's for everyone. Joby for you. Joby for you.
Joby for me. Yeah. Oh, yes. Yeah.
I want to get all robot cars still. I'll try it. Yeah, I will definitely ride it. Steve Smith was in one the other day.
An Ajobi? No, no, the robot cars. The robot, the Waymo? I don't know which brand it was.
I don't think he said. Oh. But he put up a video of the steering wheel just. Just doing it?
Driving by him and his wife and his son around the backseat. He was napping? No, they were, are you going to fall asleep in a robot car? Absolutely.
That way you don't tense up when they hit something. That way you won't get hurt. No, no, I don't care. I'm just, this is a good time to nap.
Oh. Palmer, you got your phone on you? Yeah? You got to take a little video of me doing the thing.
Oh, okay. They could be doing the thing, yeah, when I do the thing, but when I do the next thing, not like just now, but like when I'm doing the thing. No, the next thing is very short. Yeah, we're getting close to the end here.
Close to the end. Oh no. Yeah. Should I go?
Hold on, wait, he's gotta hit the record button. I hit the record button. Okay, go ahead. Now it's time for the industry's favorite game on a podcast.
Okay. What is it called? Oh, is there more? " Oh, I see.
Dot, dot, dot, dot. I see. Okay. I see that.
We'll work on that. We'll work on that. Oh, I said what? Dot, dot, dot.
Dot, dot, dot, dot. Score. This is how we know you're not a, you don't watch the show. He watches the shorts like everybody else.
Yeah, you don't watch the show. Players hear clues from a half-wheel cigar review and try to predict the score before it's revealed. As more details are shared, the challenge gets easier, or does it? The closest guess to the actual score wins the round.
Can you read between the lines and predict the score? I don't have my remote. It's there on the table somewhere, isn't it? Is it?
Let's see what happens next. Maybe it's over there on that table. It is not here. It's on that table.
It's here somewhere. I see it. I see it. Okay.
Go ahead. I will switch to you. To me? Yeah.
Pause for Mikey. I have to change glasses to do it so you guys can play. There's no idea what just happened. Oh.
Nope. Now I, okay, now, yeah, read the next line. Okay. Hold on, hold on, hold on.
Okay, now read the next line. Let's play what's the score. Palmer, what's the cigar for the day? All right, today's cigar is June 30th, 2026.
Charlie Minato is the reviewer. Espinosa, limited edition, Nicaraguan review, the 601 blue, 20th anniversary. Have you seen this review? I have not.
Okay. I will go first, since you are our guest. I'm going to say 88. Damn!
I was gonna say that. So go ahead. Say it. 88.
Okay. I think 88. Alright. The cigar is a 601 Blue 20th Anniversary.
It's from Nicaragua Factory, San Latino. Wrapper is Connecticut Broadleaf. Binder is Nicaraguan Filler. Nicaraguan length, 6 3/4 by 56.
It is pressed. They smoked three cigars for the review. I don't want to be on the same number as you. I'm gonna move to 87.
Unless you move to 87. I'm sticking with 88. Okay. Okay.
Clue number one. The review praises the 601 Blue 20th anniversary for delivering a rich, smooth, full-flavored smoking experience with impressive consistency from start to finish. The reviewer even concludes that rich, smooth, and consistent are the three best words to describe the cigar. He half-assed this one.
You can tell. What? 89. Yeah, I'm going 89.
89? Where are you going? 89? 89.
89. You and I, we are the same. We are the same. Clue number two.
Construction and flavor balance earn strong marks overall. The cigar offers classic notes of wood, leather, earth, creaminess, and pepper without becoming harsh or overly sweet, making an excellent choice for smokers who enjoy traditional full body profiles. 89. 89.
89. Clue number three. The biggest criticism is the lack of evolution throughout the smoke. While consistency is a strength, the reviewer wanted more flavor, transitions, or a unique twist, and the occasional combustion issues that required touch-ups prevented it from being a flawless experience.
Fuck. 87. 88. Alright, this is the final thought.
"The 601 Blue 20th Anniversary is right near the edge between good and very good, with perhaps its most unique trait holding it back. The cigar's overall flavor was an extremely well-executed version of the sum of its parts, but this was a cigar that more or less had one singular flavor profile, presented in a way that I'm unsure leaves much room for any sort of improvement. If you like the profile, you're going to love this cigar, at least in its relatively fresh flavor of the cigar, at least in its relatively fresh taste of the cigar. However, it's so consistent that I think it holds the cigar back from some depth required to be considered for the next level.
Mmm. Damn. They're just playing with us, Matt. Yes.
Just playing with us. It's a rough one. 88 feels like a good number. " But...
Right. Right. So you're... Pretty much.
It's a little game of cats and mouse we play. I'm going to go... I'm going to stick 87. I'm going 88.
He went the right way. 89. Oh, 89! It was 89.
Now listen. Nice. Normally, I only do this when I win. However, your son is in the room.
Are you ready? Check this out. Ready? Nice.
I like that. The only podcast with Pryotechnics. Pryotechnics? Pyrotechnics?
Pyrotechnics. Pyrotechnics. I like that. Leave me alone.
I got close. I can't leave you alone. That's my job. Leave me alone.
iHeartBDP will leave you alone. He'll correct you. Don't worry. Oh, it's a he?
I don't know. I'm assuming. We can go to this. We don't have...
You know, telling ourselves. Uh-huh. Oh, okay. They?
I mean, I don't know their pronouns. So, Mr. Booth, do you have anything else to add today? Are you going to be anywhere?
Tell me. Tell me. Any parents? Fourth of July, I will be at Club Humidor in San Antonio to celebrate Independence Day with our friends at Club Humidor, their big annual extravaganza.
I will be there in person. Excellent. July 9th, I will be in Ohio where there's a new tax. Yes.
At Creekside. That's right. Oh, shit. Yeah.
Oh, nice. Everything's going up two dollars. I'm gonna, I'll, I'll, I'll season, uh, some of the furniture fugues. I'm gonna pop in and see those guys.
Oh, a little surprise. A little, a little, a little pre-Sazone. I like it, as it were. I like it.
No, no, no, no, they listen to the show. Yeah. com for your chpod swag. Buy one, get one, get the second one, 40% off.

Indeed. And Mr. Palmer, we wish you well on your vacation. Thank you.
Thank you very much. I hope you never change from that outfit for the next four days. The next four days. Yes.
Yes. Wouldn't that be tight? That would be amazing. Where are you going?
North Carolina. Yeah, rock that, bro. Everywhere. Shirtless.
Yeah. But I'll wear the BDP tank top underneath. No, no, no, no, no. It takes away.
We are going on a boat on 4th of July, so I will not wear it on the boat. Okay. But you'll wear the overalls? Yeah, it's not in salt water.
Okay, perfect. Perfect. Perfect. I love it.
All right, thanks everybody. Goodbye.
