ACHP Episode 410 Cyber Spies and Games Crashing

Episode Summary
Episode 410 of A Cigar Hustler's Podcast opens with housekeeping — upcoming guest appearances on How About That Cigar and The Real Smoke Podcast, plus details on the November 14 Hustler Experience wine tasting with Tatuaje's Pete Johnson (24 tickets, $150, a $35 Tatuaje credit, a Tatuaje sampler and a live podcast interview). The crew also runs through CH Pod merch, the Blackout hoodie, and the weekly listener giveaway before diving into trending news: the death of former Buccaneers and Raiders running back Doug Martin in Oakland police custody, the massive Amazon Web Services outage that knocked out Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Duolingo and Canva, China's accusation that the NSA hacked its National Time Service Center, and a rapid-fire NFL Week 7 recap.
The centerpiece is a long interview with Greg Szczepankiewicz of Powstanie Cigars, recapping a week in Nicaragua with Skip Martin — from Skip's house in San Juan del Sur to the six-and-a-half-hour drive to Estelí and the NACSA/Nica Sueño factory. Greg details a planned Catador-style 5x60 sampler featuring all four Powstanie core blends, the upcoming Powstanie Sumatra (formerly tied to the Catastrophic Failure line, now box-pressed in 7x48, 6¼x54, 5½x52 and 4¾x50 with a silver P), and the new SBC, which is a Sumatra/San Andrés barber pole released in two versions that differ only by binder. The hosts smoke both side by side on air and compare pepper and heat. Greg also covers packaging and cliché changes, the winged hussar insignia, the War Chicken and War Bear branding, a new 7x48 box-pressed War Bear, the upcoming War Bear of Mass Destruction Gran Perfecto, factory growth at Nica Sueño, tobacco buyer Alex moving on to his own sourcing company, and how California's regulations may squeeze small brands out of big catalog retailers' portfolios.
Cigar news covers Tiburon, California's first reading of an ordinance banning all tobacco sales; South Hadley, Massachusetts passing a generational tobacco ban for anyone born after January 1, 2005; Fable's return to market with Fourth Prime production moving from Nica Sueño to Cordoba & Morales (distributed by Pospiech); the Tobacconist of Greenwich Opus Exodus charity event that raised $500,000 for the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation, with Fuente Fuente OpusX 25 Rare Finds samplers at $2,400; and the debut of the Eiroa Aviator Series, a $114-per-cigar Toro sold only in $20,064 trunks of 176 cigars.
The episode closes with "What's the Score?", where the hosts guess halfwheel review scores for the Luciano The Resilient (73) and, in a historic low, the 2012 My Father Baseball Bat (25) — plus listener and shop of the week shout-outs.

Welcome to Cigar Houser podcast episode 410 from shocking headlines to Sunday heroics this week's stories hit hard on the field and online and when the smoke Mike Settles. We're lighting up what really matters. This is a Cigar Hustler Podcast Episode 410. Bing bong.
Say hello, Michael. Hello, Michael. Hello, listeners and viewers across the world. Bright, new, beautiful world.
Boots is sitting on the board this week. Hello. This week. Every week.
Well, last week we had Ryan for half a show. On October 27th, Mike and I will be on How About That Cigar? , right? m.?
m. m. Eastern Standard Time. Now on November 14th, right here in this very room, it's a Hustler Experience ticketed event, a wine tasting with Mr.
Pete Johnson. Ah, yes. Mike, tell the people all about the wine tasting. It's a private event.
Yes. It's going to be held downstairs in the private lounge. Yes. Tickets are 150.
Tell them something I haven't already told them. I'm working on that. Okay. I mean, I got two sentences in before you cut me off.
It's the shirt. It's the shirt. I'm even wearing your shirt. Oh, you are wearing my shirt.
I didn't even notice. Thank you very much. Yeah. Sorry, I forgot it's your show.
I apologize. Yeah, exactly. You forgot. There's going to be a $35 credit towards any Tatuaje purchase that night.
We're going to have a private wine pairing with four different wines that I guarantee you've never, ever experienced before in your life and you're going to love them you're going to get to hang out with pete johnson we're going to do a live podcast interview with pete and as you already know if you listen to some of our other interviews they're not like your other quintessential cigar interviews so no they are not and they are great yeah we're going to have a big charcuterie board and i think palmer just farted no oh yeah it certainly sounded like it you're right over there He didn't fart. Oh, he's gotten to the age. He can't hear it. Yeah, he can't hear it.
It's just releasing. I could feel it, I'm sure. Yeah. Maybe.
It's diaper time. It's diaper time. Diaper time. Look, you changed my diaper once.
We're not doing it again. Oh, that word. So if you want to join, if you want to sign up on the private lounge, you want to be part of the event, check out the site or call the store. I can't say the site.
Oh, I was waiting to say again. I was waiting. Is there a limited number of tickets? Yep.
There's only 24 tickets available total, and we've already sold through some of them. Do I get a cigar sampler? Yes. Thank you so much.
See? That's why I need you. Even after you shit yourself. You get a cigar.
That's a Twihei Cigar Sampler as well. Perfect. All right. Now, how do we get some of that sweet, sweet CH Pod swag, Michael?
Uh-oh. com for all of our swag. We have recently released our chpod blackout hoodie, which is doing extremely well. Shout out to my guy Corey Davis, John Smith, the one and only Mark Palmer, the best Palmer ever in the entire world, and David Hoffman for your purchases this week.
com, also, I quietly turned on the Man of Smoke shirt, so it's up there, but we haven't really talked about it yet, so, Man of Smoke. And what's that beautiful shirt you're wearing today? Oh, I'm wearing, I'm wearing my hero, my mentor. I do have one question.
My guided light. The diaper king. The diaper king. In the cigar industry, who I'd be lost without with a BDP shirt.
Now that we have shirts of different value, let's say, you get 40% off the cheapest one if you buy two? It's supposed to be the lowest value, but it's broken right now, so it's actually higher than 40% off, but I'm going to fix it. Quick order now. But yeah, it's actually a little bit higher than what it is.
Also, we have to do one more giveaway, I believe. Ooh. Let's see who has commented. Do comment on the short count as well?
No. It's just on the main show. Like and comment and subscribe to us. Comment on the main show, and you have a chance to win something from us.
Did the gentleman last week claim his bride? He did. Nice. He did.
And Bryce, I got you. I'm sorry I sent you the wrong shirt. I'm going to send you another one. Nice.
Oh. But now, being as smart as I am moving forward, I won't disclose exactly what I'm sending. That way, I can't screw it up. I didn't know you disclosed.
I thought... I did for the first one. Yeah, he did. For the first one.
And that's not what we sent him? No, I messed it up. All right, so let's see. So we need you to send that back, Bryce?
No. No, look at us, just customer service and people on this show. We're going to send you what you should have. Okay.
It's looking like 10 comments. Boots, give me a number one through 10. Six. I think you picked six last week.
No, I picked last week, I picked four. There were five. Oh, Mr. Corey Davis.
Look at that, he loves me. I picked six. Hot Ticket Podcast. Formerly, I think.
I don't know if they're still doing it. But, Corey Davis, congratulations. You won a t-shirt. And he's got an idea for a Christmas shirt as well.
But it's Palmer as Santa, which is kind of what we thought. And the rule, does he have to reach out to you, or do we just send it? com. Bing bong.
All right. Bing bong. Uh, Greg's got, Greg's gonna come on also, before we move into Cigar News, Greg's gonna come on and talk about his adventures in Esteli. So, uh, Palmer's going to interview him as well.
So, I say all that to simply say that Greg has, like, some new SBCs. And I haven't had them yet, so I'd like him to just give me one now so I can smoke it. That would be fantastic. Yes.
He likes if you throw over his head and way past him. No, they're on cello. Do not throw them. Oh, there's Greg.
Oh, there's Greg's hand. He doesn't need one. Why are you getting two? What is this?
There's two versions? Two for Mikey. Oh, I see that. What do things look like, Mikey?
Cigars. The cigar. Oh. One of them looks kind of rugged.
Oh. Rugged. Pachaw, can you see that? Pachaw!
No shine on that, because there's no band. There it is. All right. Okay.
All right, now with the trending news. Ex-NFL star Doug Martin identified as suspect who died in Oakland police custody. I can't believe that, man. This is a sad story.
That guy's a stud. He was a stud. Yeah. That was one of the first times we were season ticket holders.
We saw Doug Martin. Oh, keep going. Sorry. Oakland, California, former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and Oakland Raiders star running back Doug Martin has been identified as the suspect who died in the Oakland Police Department custody on Saturday after suffering an unspecified medical emergency.
Sources confirmed to KTVU on Sunday evening that Martin, 36, died in a hospital after he became unresponsive following his arrest. By OPD officers who were responding to reports of a possible break-in. m. on Saturday to the home, to a home in the 11,000 block of Ettrick Street on reports of a break-in.
At the same time, the department received reports of a person experiencing a medical emergency. At the same location, the OPD told KTVU, the department said officers found the suspect later identified as Martin inside. However, when they tried to detain him, he allegedly briefed Chiefly resisted. OPD officers managed to take him into custody, where he became unresponsive and was taken by paramedics to a hospital.
The OPD did not specify why Martin had been taken into custody. The nature of Martin's medical emergency was not known, and the OPD said its homicide section and Internal Affairs Bureau, as well as the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office will be conducting an investigation into his death. The officers who were involved in the arrest leading up to the death were placed on paid administrative leave. So he's a suspect.
He was found inside a home where there were reports of a break-in and entry. But we don't know the details. Don't know the details. We'll keep an eye on this story.
We'll follow as more information becomes available. That's sad. Regardless if he's a suspect or not. Yeah, he's so young, man.
Obviously, he's not playing anymore. No. Eddie, Falling on hard time. Why is he not playing?
Let's start there. He's just older. 36? Yeah, running back?
I mean. Oh, okay, running back. Yeah, he was definitely in the age of where running backs were only like, you know, three, four years. They were cycling through pretty heavily.
I think that we still have that. You still cycle through them pretty heavily. I mean, Christian McCaffrey is like the one anomaly. Well, Josh Jacobs.
Who? Josh Jacobs. Yeah, what has he done? He's a good running back, but he's been around for a while.
Has he had a hundred rushing yards at all this season? I'm not sure. Exactly. He's apparently old, Mike.
Exactly. That's kind of my point. Right? I mean...
Derrick Henry's old. Yeah. He's on the struggle bus all season. Right now.
Yeah. It'd be nice if he turned it on. It'd be nice if he turned it on. Okay.
For those of us who drafted him. Right. Um... Yeah, man.
I don't know. This is... It seems like there's a lot of questions and nothing has really come out. And reports have been falling on hard times, drug problems, anything.
The sad part is that with NFL, a lot of NFL players, a lot of them go broke. I don't know if that's the case with him, but it could have been, it's very possible. You know, it's sad. You don't want to see that happen to anybody.
And like, that was one of the first guys that we got to see. The Bucks used to do like rookie training camp and stuff. And it was more intimate than what it is now, and that's kind of why I'm kind of done with it, but we got to go out, go on the field, and there's probably like 50 or 60 of us, and there were players doing drills and stuff, and Doug Barton was one of them, and he was as close to me as you and as we are. Yeah, it was incredible.
Great experience for the kids. And it kind of sucks to hear that, you know, he's gone. Because he's so young. Yeah, 36, he's young.
Yeah. Was that the year when Cadillac was there? No, I don't think Cadillac was there anymore. The car?
No, those have been around for a long time. No, it was gone. The car was not there. No, the Cadillac's been around for a long time.
I'm sure there's plenty of Cadillacs in the parking lot. Why are you saying that? That's an expensive car. Is he sliding into racist territory over there?
All right, don't try to, don't try to veer it off on me. He was getting close there. All right, moving on. Snapchat, Ring, Roblox, Fortnite, and more go down in a huge Amazon internet outage.
It just happened this morning. Many of the world's biggest apps and websites have suddenly stopped working properly. Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Duolingo, and Canva were all suffering problems, According to the tracking down, tracking website, DownDetector. Even Duolingo?
Even Canva. I used Canva this morning. Mi Español? Yes.
Is a problema? Si bueno. No bueno. No bueno.
You use Duolingo. I only got to less than one. Yeah, I use Duolingo. m.
in the UK, or on, oh, it's just in the UK, or midnight Pacific time. You legitimately do not read these articles. No, I don't read these. No, it's more fun.
Then I'll get pronunciation right and everything. Is it the berating afterwards? Is it fun? Oh, nobody says anything to me, but it's fun to watch the clips.
When you realize that the shutdown is in the UK and not in the US. There was one last week where it happened in the UK, not in the US. Since it's only in the UK, you should have to use a UK accent. The problems appear to be related...
It would appear as though! It would appear to be related to an issue on Amazon Web Services, which offers infrastructure that underpines much of the modern internet. BBC, here we come. The company was seeing increased error rates and delays with multiple AWS services instead of a service status page.
Amazon Web Service provides a host of internet infrastructure services that allow companies to hire computers and servers to run their apps and websites. As such, any problem at AWS can quickly affect much of the rest of the internet, bringing down websites that might have no apparent connection to Amazon itself. It is now the most popular provider of such cloud services in the world. It's, uh, it may be, it may be, it may be, it may be 108 billion last year and now accounts for the majority of Amazon's profits.
Amazon Web Services says it's still looking for the cause of the problems. The outage has now been going on for more than 90 minutes as of this morning. Amazon has posted a range of updates to its status pages, but they make clear that it's still not entirely clear what the problem is. The engineers were immediately engaged and are actively working on both mitigating issues and fully understanding the root cause, the latest update reads.
Okay, so, what is the one site or app that if it went down, you would absolutely lose your mind? I don't know, I'd lose my mind, but one of the biggest problems would be Facebook, I would imagine. You would lose, if you had Facebook. I wouldn't lose my mind, but it would be distracting or something, distraught or something, I don't know.
You would be stressed out? That's not the right word. Would you be disappointed? I'd be disappointed.
Be disappointed. Yeah. Why? It's the one I use the most.
It's the one you talk to your people? But as far as work-related, it would be Canva, YouTube, ChatGPT. So personally though? So personally, if I catch you on Facebook when you're supposed to be working, you're just screwing around?
No, because I represent all of our stuff on Facebook also. Interesting. Very interesting. So there's the shop, the brand.
So we've mingled business and pleasure is what you're saying. Certainly. Certainly. Can't help it.
They're all on the same thing. So if Facebook goes down, you're not happy. I'm not happy. I'm not panicking or anything.
It's not like the world is over. Yeah. Boots? I would not twitch.
You okay? What's the one app or site that if it went down, you would be stressed out? Only fans for him. Well, if I'm streaming stuff, YouTube TV, YouTube, yeah, especially if it's like FSU game, when they run in a touchdown and it doesn't get called as a touchdown, we all held it, I mean, dude, that was bullshit.
Like there was this one time actually on YouTube TV that right now, you know, the baseball's going on for the playoffs, there was a game that it kept like fluttering out. Yeah. I was losing my shit. Okay.
So, if YouTube TV goes down, what do you do? Cry? Look for another, no, look for another way. Okay.
What's the, what's the, what's the, what's plan B? Tell me the plan B. Download NBA app, MLB app. Yeah.
Are sports not on regular TV anymore? Can you, like, go to ABC and watch it? Yeah, can you just rabbit ear that shit? I think there's an antenna that you can do on your TV still.
Yeah, you see it online all the time, the thing you plug in, all of a sudden you get 750 channels from around the world. Yeah. But I don't know if any of those are sports things. So to really mess up Bootsdale, all I gotta do is just kind of stroll in on a Sunday, go to the backyard and just cut the wire.
There you go. Stress him out. Oh my God, does that work? Well, first he'll go to his phone, he'll just watch it on his phone.
Yeah, that's true. Yeah, immediately. Yeah, he'll adapt quickly. Yes.
Does anybody have regular TV? I mean, anybody in this room, anybody have cable? Does that even exist now? It's still a thing.
I think that we've all kind of gradually moved away from it. I honestly think that what the cable companies have done, too, is they've raised their prices to get you off of it. Yeah. My mom still has cable just because she can't figure out streaming.
It's just easier. But, yeah, it's way expensive. Yeah. Well, the cable companies probably like it better if they have a deal I mean, if they deal with like a whole subdivision or, you know, like the old people's 55 plus communities and stuff, they probably like those deals better, probably keep them, yeah, they keep them on cable, we're gonna charge you $25, but they probably don't like sprinkling, you know, inside of a city, yeah, you know, they can't be bothered, right, is this one?
Okay. All right. Carrying on, next. China claims the NSA hacked their national time system.
That's right. That's how we get them. We mess up the clocks. That's it.
Now they're all flashing and they don't know how to set them up. They're all flashing. S. National Security Agency, NSA, of carrying out a premeditated cyber attack targeting the National Time Service Center.
You know what? We'll go after the clocks. S. and the Hacker Empire, oh, it describes us as Hacker Empire, I thought they were Hacker Empire, and the greatest source of chaos in cyberspace, well, it depends on the propaganda that you believe, you know what I mean?
The Ministry of State Security, the MSS, in a WeChat post, because they're not allowed anything but WeChat, and refutable evidence of the agency's involvement in the intrusion that dated back to March 2022. It took them three years to figure this out. Three years later? Three years later, China just figured out we messed up their clocks three years ago.
Three years later. Well, we had to come back from the COVID stuff. You know, we had to do something. So we got the clock.
Screw up their time! The clock was away. The attack was ultimately foiled, it added. We got them.
Established in, oh, in 1966, under the jurisdiction of the Chinese Academy of Science, NTSC is responsible for generating, maintaining, and transmitting the National Standard of Time, or Beijing Time. Any cyber-attack damaging these facilities would jeopardize and secure the stable operation of Beijing's time, triggering severe consequences such as network communication failures, financial system distributions, power supply interruptions, transportation paralysis, and space launch failures, and everyone would be late, the MSSA said. No one would be on time. No one would be on time.
S. attempts to steal secrets and conduct sabotage through cyberattacks, fully safeguarding the security of Beijing time. According to the details shared in the WeChat post, the NSA is said to have exploited security flaws and an unnamed foreign brand SMS service to stealthily compromise mobile devices belonging to several staff members at NTSC, resulting in the theft of sensitive data. It did not disclose the nature of the vulnerabilities used to conduct the attack.
On April 18, the following year, the MSS claimed that the agency repeatedly used the stolen logon credentials to break into the computers at the center to probe the infrastructure, followed by deploying a new cyber warfare platform, so they didn't change the passwords a year later and we got back in again. Aha! No update. So you're saying that when Apple tells me to update my password, I should probably be updating that?
Or it could be the Chinese trying to mess up your Glock. between august 2023 and june 2024 the platform activated what described as 42 specialized tools to mount high intensity attacks aimed at multiple internal network systems of ntsc all right the attacks also involve attempts to conduct we gotta get out of this well i gotta get the end we're almost done okay we get it now and this is sabotaged this interests palmer yeah i mean everything that we could do and we went for the clock you gotta know when to cut it unless you Let's get some joke at the end. You got it. Uh, ooh, Europe and Asia were messed up too.
We know what time it is. We don't know the time no more. You mess up our time for the last time. You mess up our time for the last time.
Everyone, chain password. No more password one two. Oh, this is great. I heart China one two.
Make password three four. Make password three four. Ministry said China's national security agencies neutralize it. I'm trying to get the attack and inflated additional security measures.
So now there's two... Two passwords. Two passwords. This is just like...
You must log into your YouTube. You must scan the bar and see what you do. Who did that? Who messed with our time?
Oh, it was the NSA. Oh, the American. It was probably some guy in the office, you know, probably didn't do his job, screwed up, and then, you know, blamed the Americans. Stupid Americans.
You think? America. Totally. That's what I would do.
It's probably a 12-year-old. A 12-year-old in America? That works for the NSA? No, it's a 12-year-old in China.
Keep up with the jokes. Yeah, come on, fella. Oh, I was reading, so I get past the end. So your ears are closed?
This is just like an episode of Bad Friends. Do you watch the podcast, Bad Friends? No. You have to watch this podcast.
Yeah? Yeah. It's great. Bobby Lee's in it.
Okay. And the redhead, the comedian. Oh, nice. Oh, I think I've seen clips.
It's hilarious. clips. Okay. NFL week seven in two minutes.
Okay. Let's see it. The big story and perhaps the wildest game of the week. The Denver Broncos pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat the New York Giants 33 to 32 after trailing by 19 points in the fourth quarter.
Any names? High reports in two big blue view Giants had jumped out to 19 to no lead. No, no names apparently. I didn't ask you for no names though.
19 to zero lead and looked comfortable in the late third quarter but the Broncos It was roared back, capped by a game-winning 39-yard field goal. His time expired. Let's see. Quarterback Bo Nix sparked the comeback and a key pass.
Interference penalty helped set the stage mile high. Let's see. This game underscored how the NFL no lead to safe momentum can flip in the fourth quarter in dramatic fashion. Look at you pronouncing it improperly.
He's a bad coach. Bo Nix. How can I mess that up? The Giants are a mess.
Boo-boo picks. Are they? Yes. I mean, Denver's a really good team.
Okay. and i think jackson dart's doing a really good job i'm not disagreeing with that they the guy that left them saquon barkley got a championship well of course yeah if we go that far back that far back two years ago two years ago that was a horrible move let's talk about the one that we cut this year daniel jones who's arguably up for mvp i don't know man so look i I like Jackson Dart. I think he's got some swag, which is entertaining. Same with Scadaboo.
They're fun to watch. Scadaboo's great. They're fun to watch. However, I don't think that they're going to be able to sustain playing at the level that they're going to play at.
Let's just say this. Let's say it. I think they've already won one more game than they did last year, so they're improving. Let's just say this.
That's not saying much. I get what you said, but that's an improvement. You need to revamp. The coaching staff's got to go.
GM's got to... I'm firing everybody. You know what? I'm just selling the team.
I'm like, you know what? This isn't worth it. I think that owner just died like a couple years ago, didn't he? Well, it's time to move on.
He obviously can't get it together. Meanwhile, the owner of Indianapolis, she's got headphones on, she's down on the field. Like, that's the way to do it. Any given Sunday.
That's the way. She's just taking a clip from that. You got to watch the place. You got to know what's going on.
You want to know where your money's going. I like that. That's how you should run a business. Right?
We're moving on. Greg does. What else you got for week seven? Kansas City Chiefs remind everyone of their dominance by routing the Las Vegas Raiders 31-0.
Not impressive. Patrick Mahomes at the helm, and the receiving corps healthy, the Chiefs look like themselves again. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Rams dubbed the Jacksonville Jaguars in London 35-7, thanks to a four-touchdown day from Matthew Stafford. I thought he had five.
He had four? And three TDs by Devontae Adams. Adams had three. Are they on the same team?
Who else had some? Matthew Stafford. Higby. Yeah.
I thought he had five. No, he had one more. It was like a no-name. The star receiver, Puka Nakua?
Yeah. Good job. Thank you. Look at you.
He's out. Right. He was out, but his name's mentioned. I was making sure I got there right.
See, the Philadelphia Eagles edge the Minnesota Vikings 28-22. The quarterback, Jalen Hurts, throwing for 326 yards and three touchdowns. I must have said that name right. You just never know a Philly.
The Vikings simply couldn't capitalize in the red zone despite multiple trips inside. On the injury front, the New York Jets fell 13-6 to the Carolina Panthers. They came away with multiple key injuries and persistent offensive issues. If you're a Jets fan, I am so sorry.
I don't, you know, it's not even fun anymore to see you guys lose all. Don't they lose all the time? They haven't won a game yet. Were they 0-6 or 0-7 at this point?
That would be 0-6. They're 0-6? I mean, terrible. Absolutely.
Have Gary Vee buy that shit already. I mean, enough is enough. Like, take that over. I know that's one of his dreams.
So, it's a clean house. Hold on, Greg. Greg, you're about to be on. Okay, Greg, we'll be right back.
He'll be right back. He'll be right back. Oh, look, he's back. How is it?
You guys done talking about sports? Is there anything else to cover on this? On the Jets one? That's the latest in sports and what's trending around the world, now let's shift gears from headlines to the humidor and see what's burning in cigar news.
Now a special interview with Greg Szczepankewicz from Poshik Cigars. Oh. On his latest trip to Esteli. Oh.
With Skip Martin. Well, welcome, Greg. Hi, Mike Palmer. Nice to have you on the show again.
It's been a long time. Yeah, I don't know when was the last time I was on the show. See, the one of two things. It was the birthday episode where I squirted everybody with water guns and he almost killed me.
Oh, I remember that. Or the one where we interviewed Island Jim and he was on for about five minutes and then left the room. Yes, that was a disaster. But, yeah.
So, how long were you there? How long were you in Esteli? A week. Seven days.
And you stayed with the lovely Skip Martin? I did, yes. We drove down to San Juan del Sur where I got to see Skip's house for the first time. Oh, the mountain.
Got a tour of his home, saw his solar powered batteries and all that great stuff. That was a cool part, for sure. Very relaxing. They're relaxing.
Did you feed the monkeys? There were no monkeys that were seen, but Skip did say that there were monkeys. But the dog, did you see Buster? I saw the dog.
Good dog. Very, very needy dog. Did you spend the night at Skip's house? I did.
And then the next day we drove out to Esteli. Well, let's back up a little bit. How was the guest room? The guest room was perfect.
Was it a nice guest room? It was a good guest room, yes. Yeah, the bed was quite comfortable. Is the house air conditioned?
Yes, it is. C. C. in it, too.
The food was good? The food was good. Oh, no, Jeff Moutet is over here, so he didn't show up with any horrors or anything. No, Jeff didn't show up.
We drove through his neighborhood. I didn't get to see his house. Jeff Moutet's neighborhood? Yeah, he has a neighborhood.
He owns his own neighborhood. The whole neighborhood is his. Wow. Are there women on the corners and things?
It is the neighborhood in which his house is in. His cigar is doing great. Okay, so you fly in, you go to Skip's House, you have dinner, you stay up all night long. Did you go, oh, did you go swimming?
Went swimming. Oh, nice. Immediately. With clothes on?
Naked? No. Skinny dipping? Bathing suit inside five minutes.
So skinny dipping? No skinny dipping. Come on, Greg. Definitely not.
Come on. This is a real interview. Nobody listens to this show. Like raw.
He tells the truth. Nobody watches at all. We ate dinner inside Jeff's neighborhood, actually. It was a restaurant.
Oh, a restaurant. Yeah, it was a restaurant inside Jeff's neighborhood. He has a restaurant, is it named after him? I don't think so.
Moutes, tacos, and tequilas? No, no, no, no. No, definitely not. And pool.
And pool. Alright, so you wake up the next morning. Did Skip ever cook for you? He's an excellent cook.
He is an excellent cook. He did not cook for me this time around. I think last time I was there, he did cook. Not any of it?
None of it. So what'd you do for breakfast the next day? Uh, Arlen made eggs. Oh, Arlen cooked.
Yeah. It's just as good. Yeah. Well, Skip's a pretty good cook, though, too.
Well, yeah, but, I don't know. Still. Separate rooms. Separate rooms.
Big spoon. Oh, you and Skip in one room, Arlen in the other? No, no, no. That kind of separate room?
No, no, no. Oh. Arlen was with Skip. Arlen was in the same room with you guys?
Separate room. That's a whole other show. Totally different room. Oh.
All right, so then you got to drive down to the... Drive up. Yeah, to Estelle. Well, you drive it, whatever it is.
Oh, so it's north of where... Yeah, it took forever. It was like a six and a half hour car ride. Did he drive?
Skip did drive. How many cigars did you smoke on the way there? Wait, six hours? Six and a half, yeah.
Oh, my Lord. Yeah, it was far. It's like driving to Kansas almost. Kansas?
Right, it's not that it's far. It's the amount of time that it takes. The new speed limit, too, did you? Yeah, we were within parameters of law.
Yeah, we didn't break any rules, but it's just that there's a lot of crappy vehicles on the road and the occasional stop by the police. That was the next question. Any briberies that we had to take place? No, we were stopped on the way back, though.
Cavity search? No cavity search. Wait, you're jumping ahead. Now you're at the end of the story.
We'd like this to go... So no police on the way there. No police on the way there. Yeah, no police on the way there.
What kind of car does Skip drive there? So he's got a pickup, but he's also got a really cool scout in front of his house, which is like a... Are you familiar with it? Like an Indian scout?
No, not like an Indian scout. Oh, like a... Oh, a vehicle scout. That's a Chevy?
No, it's not. I can't recall. It's a Jeep, I think, isn't it? No.
I'll have to look it up. Super cool truck, though. It's a classic. Michael, would you like to yell out any brand names we haven't covered?
Toyota Scout? I don't think it's Toyota. No. That would sound correct.
Ooh, that sounds good. Could be an international. Excellent job, Michael. Oh, it's an international scout.
Nice. All right, six hours down to the factory. Of course. Oh, the fancy dinner was last night, so you didn't get to go to the fancy dinner.
Okay, so you get to the factory. What are you doing? What are you doing there? What was the reason for the trip, other than spooning with Skip at his house on the mountain with the monkeys?
Well, there was a fist full of reasons, right? We were going to attempt to do a new project, but that didn't happen. Instead, Skip suggested us doing our version of the Catedor, right? So, we are going to have- Version of the what, I'm sorry?
The Catedor. Oh, Catedor, okay. So, we are going to have a 5x60 made in all of our four core blends and put it into a sampler. Oh, yes.
Nice! That we're very excited about. It should be very, very cool. When is that estimated for completion?
So the blends were worked on while I was there, tasted, they seem like they're going to work out, don't know if they're going to need to be tweaked or not, but hopefully sometime in the beginning of next year it will come in with our next shipment. Oh, wow. It'll be in like January, February. Correct.
And within our next shipment will also be our Sumatra. The Catastrophic Failure Core Line. Correct, yeah. And what color is the P for that one?
The P? Yeah. The P will be silver for that one. Yes.
So it will not say CF, it will just be a P? Yeah, no, it won't have anything to do with the word catastrophic failure. It will just be Powstanie, Sumatra. Be on the lookout for that.
In odd sizes, sizes that we've never done before. Oh, really? Oh, that would be cool. Like what?
Well, my favorite, first of all, they're all box pressed. Okay. My favorite is the 7x48, which is Churchill, essentially. Oh.
And then, the other sizes are… 7x48, is that kind of like the cigar you used to smoke? It is exactly like the cigar that I used to smoke, correct, that they don't make anymore. 6 1/4x54, 5 1/2x52, and then 4 3/4x50. Oh, nice.
So, all different sizes than we've actually really done before. But five? Did you rig it off five or four? Four.
Four. Four different Vitolas, yeah. Nice. So, what else?
What else did you work on? Messed around with the new SBC, which you're smoking, and Mikey smoked one or started to smoke one of. There's basically two different versions. The wrappers on them are identical.
The fillers are identical. There's a difference in binder in between the two. Is it a, I mean, it's darker, I'm saying it doesn't look like a barber pole this time. It is a barber pole.
It is. We took Sumatra. Oh, there it is. You can see it when you turn it.
And San Andreas. So, two things from, in my opinion, our two best blends so far, which is the SA and the Sumatra. So, originally, your blend is for, this is the SBC, right? Mm-hmm.
Okay. Originally, that is not your blend of those two that you just said. What do you mean? What is the original blend of the SBC?
The SBC changes every time it comes out. Okay. We keep the size, we change the blend. So you're saying you took the two of the best ones?
I took the two wrappers from my two favorite from Marlines. Got it. Yeah, San Andreas and Sumatra. What is the other one?
The other one the same thing? So it's the... I know you said, but I wasn't listening. It's okay.
Same wrappers, same entrails, just a different binder. Different binder. Ah, gotcha. Okay.
So what I really wanted you to do is I wanted you to smoke both of them at the same time and kind of make a decision which one you liked better out of the two. Oh. In your opinion, Greg, would you change, or I'm sorry, in your opinion, how much of the taste is made up from the binder? Is there any taste?
So I think that you should actually smoke both of those cigars side by side, and you tell me the difference, because I know for a fact that it changes the cigar, without a doubt. So, it probably makes up a good portion. Well, all of it makes up a good portion, but like, so, there are ingredients in our cigars that there's only one variant leaf from Roma Craft stuff, and it tastes totally different. It still tastes like the factory, but it's definitely drastically different than their Maduro, right?
Mm-hmm. Or their Habano. Right. Oh, good, you're lighting them.
Yeah, well, since you said that, sure, I'm going to light them the other way. So, what else are you working on? There was some rumors of maybe a packaging change? Yes, yeah.
There were packaging changes. That happened as well. Everything's going to be more uniform as far as not only placement of cliches, but description of products too. We're going to add the actual name of the Vitola on top of the size.
We have a new brand for the Sumatra that's going to go on top of the box. A. and Habano, the war chicken that goes on the Connecticut, and we have an insignia that's sort of made up from the winged hussars. Are you familiar with these dudes?
The winged hussars. Is that the guy we made the first sticker of? We did make a sticker of it, correct. The knight in shining armor with the wings kind of guy.
Correct. Yep, the Polish cavalry. Yeah. What is Skip calling that one?
I mean, we have the war chicken, we have the war bear. Is he the War... Knights of the War Chicken. The Knights of the War Chicken.
The War Warrior. Yeah. No, I don't think he gave a name to it yet, but I'm sure it'll be something fun. Quite the difference in the two cigars.
And the only thing that's changing is the binder. I mean, I just lit it, but the first puff is quite different. Mm-hmm. So, it's...
Wow, what a snore that was. Is he asleep? Yeah, he's asleep. That is amazing.
He's snoring over there. No reflection on the interview at all, Greg. You're doing a wonderful job. I was sleeping over there while he was talking, too, so...
Yeah, the one in my left hand... I hope we caught that on the side. That's funny. Oh, yeah, they will.
The one in my left hand was definitely more peppery. Okay, yeah. Yep. But it was a good pepper.
It wasn't a bad pepper. Neither one of them are a bad cigar. No, yeah. Both of them are very, very good.
The one in my right hand is... It tastes very hot. It tastes very hot. Less pepper.
The one on the left. No, the right. The one on the right. Very, I mean, it's got like a hot, not like pepper, like it feels hot, like it's spicy.
Yes. Let's go back to sleep over there, Mike. We need to put a mic on my brother over there, so that when he wakes up out of his dream, he can just shine in. He can just yell things from the side.
Yeah. So, Greg, tell us about the factory. Right, so it's been a while since I've been there. How long exactly?
Oh, God, it must have been four years. Really? Yeah, it was pre-COVID, so maybe even more. Did you see the picture of Mikey and I?
I did, very strategically placed inside the humidor at Nick Esweño. It was perfect. Yeah, and Skip said that it took him a while before he discovered that it was there. Oh, yeah.
And it's still there. And he left it. He left it, so he must like it. Nick Esweño has grown a lot since the last time it was there.
I think there's something like 70 employees now. Well, this would be a new, this would be the new building, right? Yes, I did get to see the pre-industry operation as well. The bodega?
Yeah, the bodega. There are three bays. There's pylones in there, tobacco that's just aging, sorting area. It's quite impressive to see how far Nick Esweño has gone over the years, without a doubt.
Oh, it's probably neat then to have been so long since you saw it, because there would be tremendous growth and changes in four years. Sure. Yeah. It just makes sense, right?
Right. If you're doing business correctly, you should be growing. And Alex, Alex was doing or is doing a really, really good job finding tobacco. He was.
He was doing it. Well, I say was or is because he's unfortunately leaving. Oh. Yes.
He's not going to be with Nick Asueno after the turn of the year. Oh, really? He's going to go off. He's coming into CH Pod and he's going to help make t-shirts.
Perfect. He's going to do his own thing. He's going to wind up sourcing tobacco underneath his own company. So that'll be his new gig.
Is there a replacement, or is that the replacement? Well, I mean-- Good question, Boots, because I was wondering, are they going to bring him on as a contracted employee? Yeah. So that's the idea, right?
He'll be able to still perform his job, but it won't be a job. It'll be as an independent contractor, right? And then I don't know if there will be other opportunities for other people to also source tobacco. It's not easy, I mean, he runs around like crazy on top of going to, you know, Mexico, the Dominican just to find tobacco, just the day-to-day function.
He has to have good knowledge, too. He's a pretty smart dude. Keen eye. Pretty smart dude.
Yeah. I was impressed by a lot that he said and showed me for sure. It's kind of, it's a little sad that he's not going to stay part of the family, but will be, you know, an outside part of the family. Yeah, like a cousin.
Yeah, more like a, more like a third cousin. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, than a cousin. Any talk of bringing anybody else on to replace him? Because I'm sure he did other stuff besides source tobacco.
No, like, it happened while I was there. Right. Like, oh, so like, there was a night that I was there, and there was a discussion that was had, and afterwards I'm like, oh, okay, so. You were there for the awkwardness.
I was there for a little bit of the awkwardness. Well, if I was Alex, I would want to witness when I give the bad news too. Well, yeah, exactly. That's exactly what he used you as.
He was like, he won't kill me here. We don't know. Alex just left one day. I don't know what happened.
Yeah. So, yeah, the... Allegedly. Allegedly, he was here, then he wasn't.
" Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, that dynamic will be changing in the future. Man, lightweight, heavy, Frenchie, Alex. So, too.
No, I know. I'm just saying. Just guys that we know. He's just running through the list of rogues characters that are coming on.
Yeah, but that's the natural progression of any business. You know what I mean? There's always change in people and processes. Sure, yeah.
I mean, you think about the number of people that have gone through the shop upstairs. Yeah, I mean, there's been so many that have gone through. Yeah, that's true. People ask me about, do you remember this one?
No, no, I don't remember that one. Yeah, there's some time a name comes up and I'm like, hmm. No idea. I don't know who that was.
I couldn't even imagine you guys. When people ask me about people, I'm like, I've only been here for like six, seven years. I can't even remember some of them. Speaking of that, did I see one of your old employees that you fired back?
You did. I did. What was that cat's name? Randall.
Randy. Well, they called him Hamburg Aza. Yes, Randy. How many times did you fire him?
Three times. Right. But he's back now. Yeah.
I've got some grunt work. Right, you need a whole dug basically. Yeah, well I need the unit cleaned up. That's what I got them doing.
Got it, okay. So what else is coming? I mean, so we've got a new Sumatra. New Sumatra.
We got a new SBC. When is the SBC going to pop out? The SBC may ship in that same timeline with the Sumatra and potentially with the Catedor, we don't know. Because normally we do these every two years, I believe?
Yes, but it's always fucked up. Right, yeah, yeah. The 24 came out in 25. Right, but hopefully this time around, 26 can actually be for 26.
Oh, then when we skip and go to 28? Yeah, that would be the next time. We'll just catch up? Yep, that would be the next time we do it.
Ah, that's an excellent idea. Okay. Did you work on a new Warbear too while you were there? So, did that as well.
I've got that sample here for you guys to try too. Oh, nice. Sticking with like the, this is the tour of Greg, it's a 7x48 box press. Oh, nice.
So that'll be our new size for the bear. Everything is coming out in Greg sizes. Everything's coming out in Greg sizes, for sure. It's a great size, though.
I think so. I think so. It's his favorite, so. Believe it or not, Churchill, it really isn't a big seller.
Really? Yeah, when you compare to the other Patolas, sure. So, the old cigar you used to smoke was the Arganosa Connecticut. Yeah, it was a great cigar.
Great cigar. Yeah. They stopped making that size because, well, it just didn't sell. That's crazy.
Yeah. It was a good cigar. Other new stuff that we've got coming that had nothing to do with this trip, the Warbear of Mass Destruction, the WBMD, will be complete, hopefully, inside about four weeks. Oh, you got all that worked out.
Packaging is almost squared away, so. Is this a separate Warbear? So, yeah, this is this Gran Perfecto. That's the one we have, that's this year's.
Oh, okay, got it. And you're calling it the Warbear of Mass Destruction? Yeah. It's big.
Nice. Not a Churchill? No. No.
Grand Perfecto. Shaped like a bomb. Well, that's a lot of stuff you packed into a week. Yeah.
Sure. So, where did you stay in SLE? Did Skip stay at the apartment that he used to have? No, no, no, no.
He stays at a hotel whenever he goes. We stayed at Los Arcos. Gotcha. One room?
Yeah. No. One shower. I wanted to stay there so that if it should get to be a late night, I could just walk back He walked back to the hotel, it didn't matter, it was just a late night, every night, as my brother says, why is it always four o'clock in the morning?
Yeah, it's Skip, just prepare for that. Right, yeah. So, there were, there were late nights, early mornings. Did Skip, Skip doesn't show up though, first thing in the morning, no matter what time he stays up.
So, with the exception of one time, he said that he wanted to be present for a meeting with Sancho to discuss placement and creation of cliches, and basically we're making all new cliches. The meeting was for 8 o'clock, or maybe it was 9, I can't recall, but I got up early, Alex picked me up, Skip wasn't there, so we went down to Cigar Rings, we started the meeting, and 15 minutes after the meeting started, Skip shows up with a bag of McDonald's and totes, sat down and got to business. I was very happy to see him. Oh, nice.
Wow. Because of the McDonald's? Well, no, just because he made it. I hit a point where I was like, he's not fucking common, so let's just go and get this done, and then he showed up.
Right. Nice. What was the most fun thing you did while you were there? Did you have any downtime?
I mean, you packed a lot into a week, so you may not have. Yeah, no, really the only downtime was the first day at Skip's house where I got to float around in his pool and talk about the problems with the industry. That was pretty much the only time. Oh, did you solve any of the problems in the industry?
No, no. Everything's fucked. Oh, everything's fucked. Maybe Skip might have solved some of the problems.
It's a very big problem in California right now you guys should have tried to solve. Yeah. So, Skip actually had a really interesting point about that. Oh, okay.
It's actually a bigger problem. So, the big companies that will wind up fulfilling and keeping position in California are also big companies that handle, you know, direct-to-consumer as well. Because it's CI and all of them, right? So when it comes time for them to say yes or no to some of those smaller brands, it may be a deciding factor if they are allowed to sell in California, if they're going to take them on in their portfolio, right?
And if they already have things that can be sold there, less likely would they be to take on new brands as they come out, because if they can't facilitate that market, why would they? So it's really, really crazy how it could affect everything. How many CIs are in California? Any idea?
It's not about that, it's about their catalog. Yeah, that's the catalog, yeah. Oh, because they can't ship to California. Right, yeah.
It has to be an approved brand. Right, so that creates extra logistic problems. " Right. Wow.
There's definitely going to be some type of workaround, though. I guarantee it. I mean, it doesn't look like California is moving on their stance at all. There's definitely going to be some type of workaround for the little guys, because the big guys are just going to pay.
I mean, short of having a facility that you can wind up taking on product outside of the state and then crossing the border doing it illegally, I don't see any other workaround. How would they know that CI, let's say, from Tampa shipped somebody in California? A person. I have no idea.
Yeah, they wouldn't. There's no way, no, there's no way to police that. I don't, I don't think there's a way for them to do it as of right now, no. Right.
So as I'm saying, it would, yeah, it would, there's definitely gonna be the work around there. S. Mail, you can't open somebody's packages. Yeah.
All right, we're getting the, uh, the wrap up sign, so we, uh, we appreciate you coming on. Uh, your time is up, apparently. Thank you for all the information. Thank you for the cigars.
That was like a Dave Chappelle moment. Wrap that shit up, B. What's up B? Wrapped bad shit up.
Alright everybody, this has been Greg Szczepankevic from Posting Cigars on his wonderful trip to Esteli. His third time! His third trip. No, third show.
Oh, third show. Much better than the first two. Perfect, Greg. Thanks for having me.
Alright, we'll be right back. Alright, that was Greg on his trip to Niki Ragwa. And we're back. And we're back in on to the Cigar News.
By the way, the Jets are 0-7 and the coach just got fired. Did you do that through osmosis or something? How did you do that? Dude, I'm constantly working.
All the drool that was over there, just hit your phone. Even when I'm napping. All right. Tiburon, California, approves first reading of ordinance banning all tobacco sales.
Not just flavored, everything. Really? Shut it down. On Thursday, October 16th, the town council gave its initial unanimous approval for a proposed ordinance that would ban the sale of all tobacco and nicotine products in the city.
According to a report from KTVU, it's the second time we've had KTVU news, the idea for the ban came from high school students in the area who said that vaping had become a significant issue at their school, Mayor Holly Thier said that the youth in Marion County, which Tiburon is part of, vape at a rate twice that of the average in California. Like it's a vaping problem. So then ban vaping, ban vaping. I mean, I don't know, he's lighting up a Cuba Cuba in the bathroom, right?
Additionally, there are currently no tobacco retailers in the town. Oh, so it's not a problem anyway. It doesn't mean it should have happened. No, no.
Which is located approximately 15 miles north of San Francisco. Do you want to say something? If you are going to San Francisco. The ordinance must still go through a second reading and a vote in November.
And if approved at the time, it would go into effect in December. If it goes into effect, Tiburon would join Beverly Hills and Manhattan Beach in completely banning the sale of tobacco products. Weed, no problem. Beverly Hills?
Marijuana, lots of marijuana. Marijuana for days. You can have me right. Go ahead.
I'm sorry. Isn't there a very prolific cigar shop in Beverly Hills? I don't know. I have the next sentence.
In the case of Beverly Hills. Let's read on. In the case of Beverly Hills, however, sales at cigar lounges remain legal. The town of Ross, also in Marion County, is scheduled to take up a similar proposal next month, while Belvedere and Cort Madre are reportedly looking at similar options.
Tiburon is home to approximately 9,000 residents. Who's gonna regulate it? They're gonna hire somebody. They're gonna hire somebody.
Yeah. Yeah, probably somebody from like Kayak. The Tobacco Police. The Tobacco Police?
Yes. Like on Yellowstone, they have the Cattlemen's Association. They'll have the Tobaccomen's Association. We're the Tobacco Police.
You get a badge? Yes, they get a badge. Oh, and you can do whatever you want. You have to because when you're the most powerful family, people come and try to kill you, so you have guns and badges.
They've got some badges. Right. I couldn't see, like, the tobacco police being, like, masculine people. Being as cool as the Cattlemen's Association?
Yeah, they're not as cool as the Cattlemen people. What do they look like? Tell me. I think that they're sub 200 pounds.
AKA victim weight. Victim weight is what we call that. Victim weight. Very thin.
Dressed in black and white. No, multicolor. Multicolor? Yeah.
They're in Cali. White pants. Very fashion forward, white pants. White pants.
Not white people, racist man over there. White pants, no socks with their shoes. Are they wearing like Jesus sandals or shoes? No, loafers.
They're wearing loafers. With the penny on it, or the two little strings? Oh, the tassels. That's actually going to be how they're going to term the rank.
It's going to be penny or no penny for tassels. Penny, nickel, dime, quarter. I feel like tassel will be the highest. Nice.
Nice. But you start with a penny. Like, oh, you're just a, you're a tier one copper. You know what I mean?
Tier one tobacco. Oh, it's your commander. Yeah. Tier one TC.
That's it. Yeah. No weapons. They're not allowed to carry guns.
They actually. Well, it's California. Squirking. No, they actually have a stuffed animal in their holster.
Oh. A squeaky one or just a regular one? No, it can't be. They're not.
No. The squeaky is just, that's ridiculous. That's the siren on their car. They've gone too far.
However. On their battery-powered police car. When they come across somebody that's violent or aggressive, they're going to try and console them with the stuffed animal. Yes.
Yeah. Oh. Yeah, that's their tactic. That is definitely a perfect description of California.
Sir, you can't smoke that here, and the person gets upset, teddy bear. Right. That's the move. Bam.
Unless you go to Beverly Hills, go to a cigar lounge. Then you're fine. Then you're fine. Then there's guns, there's...
There's no guns. Jeans, boots. There you go. Okay.
Okay. I can't wait to AI the video of the tobacco police. Okay, Fable returns the market, moves production to Cordoba & Morales. Fable is back with an updated look at a new factory partner in 2016.
In 2016, Sean Kraminski and Matul Shah launched Fable, though it's been largely absent from the market for around half of the time since. Now it's coming back with some changes, but others are staying the same. Most notably, production of its core line, Fourth Prime, has moved from Fabrica De Tobacco, Nica Sueño, to Cordoba, Morales, they don't have no fancy name? - No.
- Tabica, Cordoba, Morales. - No, they should have. However, the blend is, at least on paper, the same, Pennsylvania Broadleaf Wrapper, Over in Ecuador, and Habano Lajero Binder, and fillers from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. When Fable was last available, there were seven 4th Prime Vitolas that were returned to the market with four Vitolas, all of which were previously offered.
25x60. While three of the Vitolas are the same dimensions as before, the Machu's ring gauge has increased from 56 to 60. 25x54 Vitolas, the Sapta is a Toro, while the Friday is a Bellicoso. Also changing are the box counts, once 56 cigars to a box, now a more standard 21 count box.
That's our number. The copycats. That's still our number. That said, the prices have increased.
Fable has always been about quality and delivering a memorable smoking experience, said Matul Shah in a press release. By partnering with Cordoba & Morales Cigars, we're able to maintain the essence of what made these cigars special while ensuring consistent top-tier production for years to come. One other thing that is not changing is Fable's distributor. , which says that cigars are available for sale.
Nice. If anybody's interested, what do they do? They can call and reach out to me, Mike Palmer at Poshik Cigars. They can email me at Mike P at Poshik Cigars or call me at 407-415-2293.
Nice. How do you spell Poshik Cigars? P-O-S-P-I-E-C-H-C-I-G-A-R-S dot com. There you go.
Nice. Attaboy. I'm a fan of Fable Cigars, so this is good news. You're excited?
Yeah, actually, I have three left in my humidor. I smoked one last night, and the other two, so I have like two sections to my green army humidor. Yeah. And on the left side are the ones, no smoke.
And no smokey? Yeah, right side, smoke. So I moved the other two to the left. Oh.
But now... You can move back to the right. I can move one to the right, because I need a one original. This is the OG.
Yeah, the OG. Smoke them both at the same time, let us know if they're different. Yeah, yeah, do your own show. Yeah, do your own show at home.
This is Boots, and is it the same? This is Boots, household name. Household name Boots. Household name Boots, smoking the two fables.
I don't like Dominicans, but I would buy Dominicans. Fan favorite t-shirt from CH Pod. Alcatraz, New York. You should be wearing your t-shirt while you do your own show.
Yeah, there you go. Alcatraz, New York. Perfect. All right, South Hadley, Massachusetts passes a generational tobacco ban.
Wow, more tobacco ban. More problems. At its most recent meeting, the South Hadley Board of Health voted to implement a generational tobacco ban, meaning that it will not be legal for people born after a certain date to purchase tobacco and nicotine products in the city. In this case, anyone born after January 1st, 2005, won't ever be able to purchase these products, Even after they meet the state's legal requirement of 21 years old.
Oh, wow. I thought you'd say something. So you can't buy in the city? In that city?
Correct. What's the city called? Hadleyville. Hadley something.
South Hadley, South Hadley. It's like a new sick home. North Hadley, perfectly fine. East and West Hadley, perfectly fine.
South Hadley, no bueno. Not even if you're 21. So just the purchase, not the consumption. Not consumption, just purchase, you can't buy it.
If you already have it, you can smoke it. That's hilarious. It's so dumb. The vote was unanimous in favor of the ban, according to a report from WWLP.
Unanimous. South Hadley joins Belchertown, Brookline, Hoppinton, and Newton as towns and cities of Massachusetts to pass similar bans. Brookline's ban, which was passed in November 2020, was challenged in court and ultimately upheld by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in March 2024. Generational tobacco bans, ban bills, have also been introduced to both the Massachusetts Senate and House, though neither has seen any movement since July.
South Hadley is located in the southwestern corner of the state, about 90 miles west of Boston and 12 miles north of Springfield. Were you and Greg born in Boston? Yes. I don't know if it was a suburb of...
Dorchester. Oh, wow. So, is that a suburb of Boston? It's a suburb.
The town is home to approximately 18,000 residents. That's it? Do you think Glenn Lube is going to comment on this one? They said it was okay, he said.
He said he talked to the guy who's directly in charge with the guy. Right, they're not going to enforce it. He works for the guy, and they said they caught him between lunch. Yeah, he was trying to get the guy on the phone, but he wasn't available.
So the guy that works for the guy who cuts the guy's yard said he heard that this other guy said it was going to be fine. And there was nothing to worry about. about nothing to worry about he had great news he had great something positive to report right while cutting the grass i heard the guy say he heard the other guy say that it was going to be not a problem so you know mayor so and so yeah you spoke to him no no no not him uh the guy that cuts his grass you talked to his assistant uh your his uh whatever the hell they call him no no and i didn't speak to him either the guy that handles the yard work yes said it was not i talked to him and he spoke to the mayor and the mayor said, who gives a shit? Who cares?
We could pass laws all day unanimous. Yeah, nobody enforces these things. Yeah. It's fine.
We're South Hadley. Where are they? South Hadley. No, wait.
Yeah, South Hadley. Yeah. Right. Where the men are men and the sheep run scared.
What? 12 miles outside of Boston. So you can go 12 miles to Boston and buy it and then drive back. I just keep going to New Hampshire and just go see my guy, Two Guys Cigars.
And Two Guys Tobacco. No, it's Two Guys Cigars. Oh, Two Guys Cigars is what it's called. Get it right.
Get it right! Sorry, I didn't get to go. Yeah. Opus X 25 Lancero Toro appear at Tobacanist of Greenwich.
It's a Lancero Toro? It says Lancero comma Toro. I don't know if it's two different ones or it's a Lancero Toro. I don't know.
Early fat long cigar. Well, many retailers are taking delivery of the Opus 25th Anniversario Tributo, A 7x50 Churchill, one retailer, one retailer has received two other FFOX 25 Vitolas. Yeah. Last Wednesday, October 8th, Tobacanists of Greenwich hosted its third annual Opus Exodus, a hybrid sales and charity event at Tamarack County Club in Greenwich, Connecticut.
This year's event, which included a charity auction of a rare Arturo Fuente cigars, raised more than... anybody? $50,000. Boots?
Probably $10,000. $500,000 for the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation. The charity founded by the Fuente and Newman's families that operates multiple free schools and its campuses in the Dominican Republic. Well, it's like the richest yada yada.
I wish we would have had that piece of information when we were guessing. I knew that. Oh, I didn't know. Isn't that where they gave them the eggs a couple years ago?
They got the Padron thing. They got the special cigar. No, no, the school, during COVID, they handed out eggs to everybody or something, wasn't that the place? Was that the place?
No, I didn't know that. What? We covered that in the story, yeah. They handed out eggs.
They advertised that they handed out eggs. They raised money and bought eggs for everybody during COVID. Oh, no, that's a totally different thing. That was Alec Bradley or something.
I thought it was Arturo Fuente's school. No. All right, then we're on. That was like Honduras or something.
Part of those proceeds were from the sale. It's not Greenwich, North Carolina, where are those? No, in the Dominican, all the money went to go help their schools in the Dominican Republic. And they gave them eggs?
Well, I thought years ago, during the COVID, that they advertised that they gave out eggs and food. No, this is a different company. Proceeds were from the sale of the Fuente Fuente Opus X 25 Anniversario Rare Finds, a 10 cigar sampler that contained six Fuente Fuente Opus X, two Fuente Fuente Opus X 25s, two Fuente Fuente Opus X Toros. Is it Fuente Fuente now?
I don't know. " Fuente, Fuente, yeah. Wow. Do you want to hear a funny story?
Yes. Please. So... Greg didn't really go to Esteli?
No, yeah. He never left. He never left his house. He just took a week's vacation.
So, like, three of my... Back to Japan. Three of the last stories that we covered, I did clips on, was the Sean Williams, Kohiba... Yes.
Crowned... He commented. Crowned Heads. Hold on.
Oh, sorry. Crowned Heads, and Fuente, Fuente. Yes. So what I did with all three of those guys is I invited them to collaborate.
Like I did the article and whatever. I had the videos. If it had something, like, hey, I might as well invite them to collaborate. Sure.
Right? Because they all hear that we talk evil things anyway, so I might as well just bring it to them. Yes. Here you go.
So I invited, Sean was the first one, invited him to collaborate. Obviously, he didn't accept, but he did comment. He did comment. Okay, so there's that.
But I'm like, hey, why don't you accept the invite? You know, like, well, what are we doing? Sure. And I did Crown Heads this morning, so I don't know if they accepted the invite, but John, I'm expecting you to accept it.
Miguel, I know that you listen. Come on, John. But, I did Fuente, and I invited Carlito Fuente, and you want to know what I got? What'd you get?
A message back from him about one of his-- Cease and desist? Like his, he announced, he sent me an image of, oh, it's my sister's birthday, I'm like, wait a second. Oh, I saw that. Like, yeah, like, okay.
Right. It has nothing to do with what we're talking about. Are we inviting you and your sister to collaborate, or just you? Do I want you to tag your sister?
Do I need to tag her as well? Listener of the week, Carlito. What is her name? I can picture her face.
Can I picture her name? Mrs. She's married. Carlita.
Carlita. It's twin sister. Yeah, no, oh, just, hey, it's feminine. Miguel has taken on, he ruined that I cannot use now, Creature from the Black Lagoon in my Monster series, because he used it over the weekend.
Who, Miguel Chadell? Yeah. Crownheads? Yeah.
I've been doing that Monster series every day with a new monster smoking a Bosania cigar. Well, I hadn't used Creature from the Black Lagoon yet, he took it Saturday. Oh. Miguel.
Oh, that was funny. You rat bastard. Smoking a Crownheads. What?
He was smoking a Crown Heads with a Crown Heads hat. Oh, was he? Yeah. He likes the hats.
Yeah, it's a very big in hats. Crown Heads are very big in hats. A lot of hats. Wait until we drop our hat.
Ooh. Maybe a new hat coming. All right, Tobacconist of Greenwich has listed the remaining samplers online priced at... Oh my Lord.
$5,000. Boots? $250,000. That's $250,000.
He has one brain cell, I swear to God. They raised $500,000 and his one sampler is half of that. He only sold two samplers. It raised half a million dollars.
How many did he sell? Two. Two. Two.
What's all? Two. They were priced at $2,400. Just 300 boxes were created.
The store has also listed an Opus Triple X branded bourbon that was bottled by First Cut Barrel Company. It is priced at... What? I'm not guessing.
I'm not guessing. I'm not guessing anymore. Go ahead, Boots. Go ahead.
$7 million. A bourbon? Yes, a bottle of bourbon. Triple X bourbon.
Let's go $150. I'm going to say $1,500. $600. What a weird number.
600? Limited to 120 bottles. The Opus Exodus Experience is so much more than an event. It's a celebration of friendship, passion, generosity that define our cigar family.
Said Michael Kaffkino, owner and CEO of the Tobacconist of Greenwich, which is a press release each year. That guy's got a private jet, for sure. "Each year, I'm humbled by the energy and devotion that fills the room. " While the Opus X-25 has remained exclusively, originally sold only as part of Eli Blue Humidors, Ellie Blue.
Humidors, this is not the first time the Arturo Fuente has released an exclusive Vitola to stores 2023. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Okay. Very exciting stuff.
Yeah, so. My first clip is going to be $250,000. $250,000. They raised $500,000.
All right, hold on. It didn't cut the story that you wanted to cut. It's like a house. You can have these five cigars, or a small shack in Miami.
Make fun of them again for a second, I gotta get through the story. I can't keep it going. You know, it's nice having Greg in the audience too, because he started dying laughing. So, let's talk about this then, since we've got some airtime.
Yeah, you gotta second. That's three zeros, two, five, zero, zero, zero, zero, yeah, it's 250k. Do you think Powstanie would ever do something like that? Is it that expensive of a box?
Uh, I don't know. Never say never. Yeah. Who knows?
Who knows where the road takes us? What if I got some really rare Martian tobacco? You know what I mean? Yeah.
That you could only fly in a Tesla spaceship. We sent it back from Elon's. Yeah. Yeah.
Exactly. I don't know. Who knows? It'd be cool if you guys did like a series.
Well, like the reality is that in order for that to work, You got to be in that retail store. You have to be in a spot where there is a ridiculous amount of cash. I think, I mean, maybe not that expensive, but I think you guys could definitely do something like maybe half the price here. Yeah, in Deltono?
Well, you know, you're selling it probably online, not in Deltono. Ah, maybe. Maybe do like a banger ring, a who shot you, catastrophic failure. Oh, like a catador?
$229,000? No, but maybe like a $700 or $800 box. I don't know, we'll see. We got other things going on.
I'm trying to sell t-shirts for 30 bucks. Yeah, right. All right, the Iroa Aviator Series is debuting this week. This week, the first three launch events for the Iroa Aviator Series will take place.
The Aviator Series is offered in a lone 6x52 Toro that uses a panel wrapper and a blend of tobaccos from Colombia and Honduras. More recently, Christian Iroa, founder of CLE Cigar Company, has disclosed that the blend also uses, hmm, Penarejo? No, keep going. Do it again.
Seed tobacco in older Cuban seed. Penarejo. P-I-N-A-R-E-N-O. Penarejo.
Okay. Cuban seed that was once grown in Honduras but lost out to the more disease-resistant Corojo seed, so Corojo killed it. We used some first-generation, whatever that word was, seed from Cuba. In Cuba, my father grew in Yamistran.
Keep going. Yamistran. Yamistran. Said Iroa previously, he has had the seed for decades but has not grown it since 1979 when the blue mold swept through Honduras in 1977.
Any attempt to grow it in Honduras has yielded continuous losses of 25% to 40% on the field due to its susceptibility to everything. Susceptibility to everything. Right. Tiroa has talked up the cigar.
Most of the talk around the Aviator Series has been around anything other than the cigar itself. Each cigar has an MSRP of? Oh, $30. Boots?
$50. $114. Jesus. $250,000.
I'm sorry, I was way off. I should have guessed $250,000. A price that might seem quite high until you see how the cigars are packaged. Each cigar is held into a piece of Honduran cedar wood via a leather strap.
What kills that tobacco? Everything. Everything. Sun, bad.
Water kills, it's susceptible to being grown in itself. That piece of wood, essentially a large tray, is placed inside a briefcase that is molded after an old briefcase that was used by Christian's grandfather. But that is hardly the end of the packaging story. Each briefcase is then placed inside a large trunk, reminiscent of an older luggage that might have been used by people traveling to steamships.
In total, each trunk holds 176 cigars and has an MSRP of, oh my lord. Well, it's 115 a pull, and how many are in there? 176. That's a lot.
That's a lot of cigars. That's a lot. Boots? I'm going to go with 3,000.
Hey, it's a piece of luggage. It's a piece of luggage. You put a piece of luggage inside a piece of luggage inside a tray with a wood strap. With Ecuadorian wood.
It's probably like 15 grand or so. $20,064. There you go. The trunks were created by...
Or three. Or three. Jesus. Solid $3,000.
Trunks were created by Santiago Iroa, a Christian son who worked with Santiago Riano, a Colombian artist. The younger Iroa developed the project without his father, knowing the body of the trunk is made of aluminum and then is covered in Honduran cedar, wood, and leather. There are also brass accents and even humidification. The only way to retailers to purchase the Aviator Series was by purchasing an entire trunk, and there were only five of them.
As part of the purchase, Eurora is hosting an event at each retailer, so if you buy the trunk, he shows up. Yeah, of course he does. Did you hear how much it was? $20,000 a trunk?
He better show up. So it'll be at Greenwich. Let's see, the five events are at: Churchill's Bistro & Cigar Bar, CDOT, Ambassadors Fine Cigars, Big's Mansion, and Benny's. Those are actually people's houses.
Benny's? B-I-N-N-Y-S? Yes. Yeah, Benny's is a big chain.
Oh, it's a chain. Yeah. Hmm. So, those took care of all the trunks.
Yeah, so you're not going to get one once you go there. Yeah. Correct. " We should all say that in unison when it's time, we should say, what's the score?
Try it again, try it again, hold on, go back. Now the biggest game to sweep the cigar industry, what, you guys are, oh, one more time. Yeah, you gotta let us know. Yeah.
Okay, after I say industry, then we're gonna say what's the score. Okay. All right, now the biggest game to sweep the cigar industry, what's the score? All right, today our two contestants are Mike Steppon-Cabbage coming off a tremendous loss from last week.
Yes. I won. I thought he won last week. I won.
He won last week. Yeah, I won last week. You got one spot on, and then you got one, you got a half, I thought. Okay, well, we need to get you to bed, because...
He thought he won two. We tied on one, we were off by one point each, and then I nailed the second one. All right. So, he definitely lost.
Not only did he lose, but I nailed one. I thought he nailed one last week. No. Don't you watch the clips?
Have you put that one up yet? Nope. Yeah, we didn't watch that one. All right, first cigar is from October 16, 2025, reviewed by Charlie Manato.
Yeah. It's a limited edition Luciano Cigar Review, The Resilient. Oh, it's The Resilient. That's how it is.
Resilient. Oh boy. I like The Resilient, you should change the name, the other name is better. The Resilient.
Resilient. All right, who's going first? You go first, winner. I'm going to go...
I'm going to go 88. Who's reviewing it? Charlie. Oh, boy.
I'll stay 88. I'll stay 88. I'll go 82. All right.
Country of origin, undisclosed. Of course. Factory, undisclosed. Of course.
But he owns both of them. Yep. Rapper, Ecuador Habano 92. Binder, Ecuador, Connecticut Seed.
Filler, Nicaraguan and Peru. 6 by 52. It's round. Sells at $24 each.
And a smoked three cigars. Okay. I'll stick 88 right now. Mr.
Boots? 82. Okay. Unfortunately, the cigars don't look all that great.
All three of them use wrapper leaves that have lots of very prominent veins, though the third cigar is the one that sticks out like a sore thumb. More on that in the final notes. Okay. Off the jump.
They look like sheet. They look like sheet. Looks like shit. I'm gonna go...
I'm gonna go... SPC got an 82 from Angry Charlie, and it looks much better than that. I'm gonna go 81 to start. I can't believe you even used that as a comparison.
Yeah, well, I'm just going off the guy who did the review. Yeah, I mean... Fuck, 80. 80?
Yeah. Alright, clue number two. Squeezing the cigars is slightly concerning. Each has a hard spot, but the second and third cigars each have a large section that feels solid.
The wrapper aroma from the first cigar is medium full with acidity-leading Boneyard leather and earthiness. 79. I'm going to stick at 80. Third clue.
Before the halfway mark, the first and second cigars just go out and stop burning. Spoiler alert. While a relight gets the second cigar back on track, or at least on some sort of track, the first cigar is quickly turning into a proverbial and literal mess. It keeps going out and requires touch-ups every 15 to 20 minutes.
Unfortunately, once the cigar was ashed and any semblance of ash integrity goes away. Didn't stay lit, fall apart, and once he ashed it, it would not hold an ash anymore. I can't believe he published this. " So, there it was.
Seventy-seven. Yeah, I'm, I gotta go seventy-five. Whoa. All right.
I don't know, I've never seen anything hit a seventy-five. Final thoughts. All throughout the experience, I kept coming back to the same thought. This is not what anyone in Constella would want me to smoke.
From the appearance, to the feel, to the smoking experience itself, at every turn, there were obvious signs saying, that this was quite far from the company's best foot forward. While three were some, while there were some differences, I smoked three cigars that were consistently flawed and it all points towards poor bunching. The bunching created the tight draw, which probably is the origin of the combustion issues, and both those things affect the flavor. So again, I say this review represents the three cigars I smoked.
I hope they are nothing like what you smoke. Oh, he's recommending people smoke it? No. " Quite possibly the worst experience Charlie has had this year.
Aside from the SBC, of course. If he fucking says 80... 92! We're gonna visit Charlie.
I'm gonna go 71. It's, uh, 73. Ooh, 71. Oh!
Bam! Did you read this review? Maybe. Yeah.
He didn't get a job faking it though. Yeah. I may, I may have, I may have sandbagged you on that one. Yeah.
All right. Review number two. This is from April 1st, 2012. Reviewed by Brooks Whittington.
Okay. It's a My Father Cigar in Nicaragua, My Father Baseball Bat. Boots? Which means it's shaped like a baseball bat, boots.
Right. It's a My Father Cigar, I mean, so I'll go 85. That's low. I'm going to say 89.
All right. My Father Baseball Bat, country of origin, non-disclosed. Factory, not disclosed. Wrapper, not disclosed.
Binder, not disclosed. Those fillers, not discolosed. 5. Ring gauge, 58.
It's a baseball bat. $40 each, these costs. Came out in 2010. Only smoked one of these.
You can only find one. Wow. Super limited. Only one chance.
89. I think I'm going to go down to 86. My father baseball bat starts the first third extremely bitter and only gets worse. It is a pretty nasty taste, like what I imagine eating random droppings at a farm tastes like.
Wow. I am barely able to continue smoking and contemplate getting drunk to help deal with the taste. Brooks, this is serious? Yes, this is real.
Wow. This is real. I stumbled across this and could not pass. Boots?
Oh, that was, okay. That was yeah. That was clue number one. I'm going to go back to 85.
84. The draw is too loose, and about halfway through the first third, the rapper starts to unravel in a pretty significant way, leading me to consider putting it out. However, I decide to soldier through for your enjoyment and for the pictures. 79.
78. Number three. Sadly, albeit predictably, the bat continues on its trend of awfulness. The bitterness overwhelms any actual flavor there may be, to the point that I am almost starting to get physically ill.
There's nothing else to taste, and I have to slow down or risk losing my dinner. Not because of nicotine, but because of how bad this tastes. Wow. Seventy-four.
Seventy. Both the baseball bat and the pipe are extremely cool to look at and actually draw fairly well, and my hat goes off to the rollers. Each one is just an amazing work of art that obviously took quite a bit of time, talent, and effort to complete. Having said that, the My Father Baseball Bat is obviously a cigar that was not intended to be smoked.
There were no flavors, no notes, no profile, just a rancid, bitter flavor that never goes away and, in fact, only gets worse and stronger until the blessed end of the cigar. Slowing down, puffing did not help. Speeding up, puffing did not help. The only thing that would stop the pain is to actually stop smoking and wash my mouth out.
If you have one of these, please, for the love of all that is holy, do not smoke it, just enjoy it for what it is, a cool piece of looking art that just happens to be made of tobacco. You have been warned. Is that the final note? That was the final thought.
Okay. So there's no more guesses after this, right? No more guesses is your last guess. 67.
Damn, that is a tough number. Is it worse than a 67? The answer is yes. 66.
25. Oh my god! I stumbled across this this morning. This is the lowest scored cigar on their page.
Wow. Does anybody have any of these? I want to smoke this. Please.
Who's the shingles guy? Miguel Chadeau? Yeah, maybe he's got one. He likes baseball.
No, he likes baseball. Who's his shingles now? He likes baseball. All right, listener of the week.
What do you got? You already said the listener of the week. Hey, it's not Christina Fuente. John Giurgalette, and today is his birthday.
Happy birthday. Happy birthday. Happy birthday. Shep of the week.
Tell me. Bia Luxury is going to be the first to have the new Fable Cigar. Oh. James is the man.
James has helped us out with some stuff, too. BL Luxury is awesome. Awesome people. It's a great place.
Great store. Great group of people. Where is it located? Harrisburg, PA.
In Pennsylvania. Yep. Nice. Yep.
Absolutely. And when will he have that release? I don't know when he's releasing it, but it'll probably be there tomorrow or the next day. It shipped at the end of last week.
Okay. You think Matula would have placed an order? It's so weird. He's holding it for his event.
He's holding it for his event. Okay. Right. All right, that's it.
