ACHP Episode 528 There Is No Privacy

Episode Summary

Episode 528 of A Cigar Hustler's Podcast has Mike Palmer joined by Phil McGuffey (fresh off the set of his zombie movie "Dead Inside Me") and returning guest "Triple G" Greg for a loose, news-driven roundtable. The first half is off-topic mayhem: a proposed class-action lawsuit against Nike (and similar suits against Costco and FedEx) over tariff-driven price hikes and potential tariff refunds, a Loma Linda University study in the Journal of Nutrition linking egg consumption to a lower risk of Alzheimer's, a hidden-camera voyeurism arrest at a Barney's Coffee & Tea restroom on Park Avenue in Winter Park, and the opening of Florida's statewide alligator harvest and alligator "super hunt" application periods. The crew also debates whether a business owner has any real responsibility to sweep its own bathrooms for recording devices.

The cigar news segment covers three stories. California's cigar tax rate drops on July 1 from 54.27% to 51.08% of wholesale cost — a savings of roughly 16 cents on a $9.50 cigar — and the guys explain how the state's odd practice of pegging the cigar rate to cigarette prices (and floor taxes on retailer inventory) ends up hitting consumers and retailers either way. Next, Oscar Valladares Tobacco & Company signs a French distribution deal with Volutes et Vitolas, bringing Leaf by Oscar (Connecticut, Corojo, Maduro and Sumatra) and the unfortunately named Plan B bundle line to French shops at notably higher euro-converted prices. Finally, they dig into Flor de Copán in Honduras and Tabacalera de García in the Dominican Republic resuming shipments to Altadis U.S.A. and JR Cigar after OFAC granted Tabacalera a temporary license valid through 2028 (with a parallel UK license running to 2031), tied to efforts to remove majority shareholder Zhenli, who is in Chinese custody.

The factory story turns into the episode's most substantive cigar talk: what actually happens to tobacco inventory when a factory gets padlocked, how bales versus pilones age and ferment, how security really works at Nicaraguan and Dominican factories, and whether a temporary license is a stepping stone to permanent reinstatement. The show closes with a double round of "What's the Score," guessing review scores for the Brooks Whittington–reviewed Second Growth from Merch 1st Cigars (a $78, 7 7/8 x 54 Churchill Grande blended by Henke Kelner at Occidental Cigar Factory, which scored 76) and the Sacrificio Jr. from Patrick Lagreid's review (Ecuadorian Connecticut, Cameroon binder, Condega and Jalapa filler, made at Tabacalera Oliva de Nicaragua, $15, scored 84).

All right, three, two, one, go! What color? Is it red or green? It's red.

I feel that's not recording. Is the timer clicking on the screen? No, no, it's on the screen now. All right.

I see it red. We had a little technical problem, so we're We're starting the show over. All right. Welcome to a Cigar Hustler Podcast Episode 528.

I'm Mike Palmer, your host, and over to engineering, back from his new- it loses some oomph when you gotta read it the second time. It does. It's so bad. Just read my intro.

Back from his new movie, Dead Inside Me, we have Phil McGuffey back with us today. Hello, peoples. And then Mikey was busy doing something, we don't really care, but back by popular demand, and mostly 'cause his mom yelled at me to have him on more often, Triple G is with us again today. Phil is just over there not pushing buttons like I do that.

I'd like to confirm that we're definitely recording at this point. No, we're we're recording whether we are or not. Yeah. No, your mom told me to send the recorder after I'm done with the mom.

I don't understand. I don't know. Because you said she was still here. Is she still here?

She is still here, yes. Is she here tomorrow? Uh, we drive, we drive mama to the train tomorrow. We drive mama to the train.

Oh, that's not like the Yellowstone, Yellowstone train, is it? oh it's a train station oh she's having a drive yeah she turned up on a train yeah yeah on today's show come on in ricky it's fine on today's show nike is gonna pay big eggs are good for your mind uh and winter park florida at a local coffee shop you may be on candid camera oh and then in florida anybody want to do a super gator hunt we have details on how to get that greg would like that you would like that because you're very outdoorsy i like to kill shit And he's outdoorsy. And in cigars, California just got cheaper, Oscar Valladares is saying ooh la la, Altidus is back in the Dominican and Honduran cigar business, and then we have a double what's the score? Double what's the score?

Double? I was thinking if that noise went off again. Do-do, do-do, finish it. But first, who wants to tell us about how to get some CH Pod swag?

com You buy one shirt You get the second one 40% off And this week only There's no discount on shipping No free You only get a discount As Palmer would not like to give out It's Palmer Shipping Week here CHPod swag You gotta make money somehow Yeah so go on there, buy a shirt, buy a hat Don't buy a beanie because we don't have those Nope. Beanies is overtaken, though. Can't get a knife, because can't get those either. I got mine.

King has his. Oh, I think they're supposed to send me one. Well, mine came from 14 knives. Oh, nice.

It's one better than 13. It's one better than the 13 guys, apparently. That's their slogan. One better than 13.

I have to message those guys. Maybe you could try for 12 knives, and maybe that's a little less expensive for you. Okay, I'll try it out. I'll get the link from it.

Okay, well, the length was for 14. Yeah, just substitute the 4 for 2. Oh, okay. Yeah.

Okay, Palmer, you're up. Oh, sorry. Comments. Oh, comments again.

Comments again. Complete shit show. It always is. I got to get my glasses.

The print is so small and I set them in the ashes over here. At least the nice thing is we're not getting yelled at right now. Yeah, that's nice, huh? Yeah.

He has to do a lot of editing when he has to cut all that out. All right. Alright, from Epicurean Smokes on yesterday's, today's, I'm not sure, but the previous show's episode. Pretty quick in the draw with Denise Richards there, Mr.

Palmer. Well, my wife watches that show on TV. Denise Richards. Alright, CW6383, the fact that they made three Diet Anything cigars is beyond unfathomable.

Nice. Data Catch 2004, I love it when Triple G is on the show. Mmm, very popular. Ruckus Unchained.

We need more Triple G! Oh, two! Is that the mom handle? Yeah, that's his mom.

Those are both his mother. Ruckus Unchained. Both his mother. Let's see.

And then from Ben Rowland on two shows back, we're just gonna glaze over the fact Phil's no docking comment at 9:39. Yeah. There was another time thing for Phil, but I think we already mentioned that one. Yep, that's it, I guess.

All right, if you like your comment right on the air, comment on one of the shows, we don't do the comments on the shorts, just the main shows, but thank you for commenting on those too. Yes, more Phil comments. Usually the ones on the shorts are not nice. A little more insulting about us being idiots and stuff.

Well, we already know that we're idiots, but... Hey, just keep listening, we don't care what you call us. All right, moving on. We're still recording, perfect.

Now we're still recording, we've made it past the point of no return now. Alright, Nike was hit with a proposed class-action lawsuit in federal court in Portland, Oregon. Ooh, Mr. Knight.

Are those Nike boots? No, I don't wear Nike boots. The claim is that Nike raised prices to cover tariff costs, then may also receive tariff refunds from the government after a Supreme Court ruling created a double recovery, Reuters says. Ooh.

Mike allegedly paid out $1 billion in tariffs and raised some shoe prices, $5 to $10 in apparel, $2 to $10 to cover the tariffs. Yeah, but I mean, so what? How can you force them to give that back? I don't understand.

Well, Mike is not committed to refunding consumers and a declined comment to Fox Business. Similar lawsuits have also been filed against companies like Costco and FedEx. I don't know. It's a big class action suit.

There obviously is no winner yet because they're still doing it. But yeah, they raised the prices and then got all the money back and then didn't lower the prices. Yeah, but they have the right to determine whatever their prices are. You would think they can make the price whatever.

Yeah, I don't know if this goes anywhere. Uh, but apparently Costco and FedEx are being sued too, so it's not like it's the only one. And it's class action, so I guess you would just have to have a receipt that you bought something between a certain time. Is it like, uh, the phone thing that we discussed last time?

Everybody's gonna get a check for 25 bucks? That's the way it'll work out, right? Yeah, not, maybe 25, it could be less. Poor Costco.

Costco's on the down. So did, I was supposed to ask you if we paid the current tariffs on our next order this week? So we will be paying the current tariffs on our next order, absolutely. Apparently...

How much tariff? From Nicaragua, it's 10% right now. There are only three or four, I can't recall the exact number, of pending lawsuits that was found that they could uphold the fact that the percentage was not legal. But there's going to be an opportunity for it to be appealed, and it's still going to go back and forth.

Nothing is set in stone yet. So we still pay. So 10's what it's at. This isn't the additional 10 he was talking about.

Oh, no, he said if they take the 10 away, he's going to do his secret, nobody knows law, and add 10 more, or add the 10 back. Right. But that's not the current state. No, no.

Currently, it's the 10 is there. Yeah. So are we raising prices 10 percent? We haven't raised prices.

That's right. We're not raising prices. That way, if we ever do get a check back, we just keep it. We split it three ways?

I don't, that's not how it's going to work. Palmer, have you not learned in how many years we've been here, there's no money to us. We get no money. Well, that's technically not part of the show, though.

Oh, well, yeah, maybe you're right. I don't know how the other side works. But still, it's not very different, trust me. It's not really different.

Just slightly a little different. Slightly more work. Yeah, yeah, more work, it's just, I don't know, this thing went to five days a week, I couldn't give you more, it's six if you count the editing I have to do on the weekends. Yeah, thank God we're not doing it on Sundays, huh?

Right. Don't say that out loud. Well, that's usually when I edit the Friday shows on Sunday, because Saturday now, I set up the Saturday show, which was my own fault, but still. Yeah, you did request that one.

That one doesn't take long to do, and that one's kind of fun. Yeah. All right, next story, eggs. A new study has revealed a linked, see, I meant to buy eggs.

I was gonna eat hard-boiled eggs as I started reading this story. Oh, that would've been nice. That would've been funny. Just shoveling eggs into your mouth.

And then when they cut to you, you're shoveling eggs in. Oh, yeah. And then they cut to him, he's got egg all over his face. It would've been so creative.

It would've been funny, but now I forgot to get the eggs. So apparently, I need to eat the eggs and then redo the story about the eggs. You know, just start over again. I'll go to Publix.

If that's the question, what came first, the story or the eggs? Right. New studies reveal the link between egg consumption and reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease. Oh.

See, now you get what the joke would have been? It would have been great for you, Palmer. Shoveling egg, right. Exactly.

The research from California, Loma Linda University. Anybody ever heard of Loma Linda University? Never heard of it. I'm sure it's like one of those auto loan places.

Are there teams any good that play basketball or football or something? Doesn't sound like it. - But you've probably bet on them. - Probably not.

- Published in the Journal of Nutrition, aimed to analyze the relationship between the neurological condition and dietary habits of people that eat eggs. Do you eat a lot of eggs, Craig? - Well, it's just like having your brother on. I'm doing the show.

You're over there texting away. - I eat eggs. I don't eat a lot of eggs. - Is that your wife?

- It is my wife. - Do you eat one egg a day? - No, I don't eat one egg a day. I would probably eat like three or four eggs total for the week.

And you have chickens. Yeah, the great thing about chickens is that they make eggs. You have free eggs. Well, yeah, not free though.

Yeah, I know, not exactly. It's not even close to free. Yeah, I used to have chickens. Yeah, the calculated cost per egg is about three to four times the actual cost of buying them in Publix.

Is it really? Well, yeah, you got the big fucking cage. Yeah, but okay, the cage, the ROI on the cage is probably already run through. Okay, and then that cage breaks, it's time for a new cage.

And then does it break? Did you not build it correctly the first time? Well, no. The elements could destroy it.

You have to... What happens at your house, for God's sakes? There's a lot of violence. A lot of storms and things?

A lot of violence at the house, yeah. Are there animals that try to get into each other? So we've lost like maybe four or five chickens over the years that have been killed by raccoons mostly. Raccoons are terrible, they're very easy.

So then you've got to buy more chickens, right? The few that are left are PTSD from seeing their friends killed by the raccoons. Yeah, did I ever tell you about the original chicken math? The original chicken math was: I approved two chickens for the wife to buy, she ordered three and she showed up with four.

So that's chicken math. Chicken math. Did the raccoons get into the coop or did they kill the chickens through the coop? They pull the chicken piece by piece out the cage.

Oh, see that's what happened to Mark Gordon? Yes, thank you. Mark Gordon's house. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Except he raised his chicken coop up thinking he could keep away from the raccoons. They went underneath and started with the feet and yanked them. They're vicious little animals. Oh, he showed me a video.

It's terrible. It's very bad. It's terrible. Raccoons are terrible animals.

Just being ripped apart by a raccoon. Yeah. For no reason other than, we're just gonna kill it. Yeah.

Well, and then they eat it. No. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they just kill it and leave it.

Yeah. Well, I shouldn't have been saying shit the other day then. You know? What did he say?

Was that English? I don't know what he said. Should have been saying shit the other day? I'm not sure what that was.

Did you just have a stroke over there, Princess Peach? Shouldn't have been saying shit the other day in Shanghai. You know what I mean? Wow.

What? I'm not sure what that means either. He has literally had a stroke while on the show. We're going to be rich now.

You know what? Give me some eggs. The study noted that eggs are known to be a source of key nutrients The participants' diet and lifestyle were assessed via questionnaire. I think this is a great question.

I think this is a good question. I think this is a great question. The participants' diet and lifestyle were assessed via questionnaire. I think this is a great question.

The participants' diet and lifestyle were assessed via questionnaire. I think this is a great question. The participants' diet and lifestyle were assessed via questionnaire. I think this is a great question.

The participants' diet and lifestyle were assessed via questionnaire. I think this is a great question. I think this is just assumed information. How do you know if the person has Alzheimer's, how many eggs did you eat yesterday?

They're bubblegum is their answer. Yeah, it sounds like they had a lot of brain power there. So the scale is anywhere from never ate eggs before to eat five times per week. Egg intake was divided into two types: visible eggs, like boiled, scrambled, or fried, and hidden eggs, which are used in ingredients of foods like baked goods.

Oh, I didn't think about that. As long as you're consuming egg in any form at all. Now I'm eating more eggs every week. Right.

I mean, I just ate some bread. Right, there's egg in that. Oh, look at that. People that ate eggs one to two or three, one to three times per month or once a week at a 70% lower risk of Alzheimer's.

One to three times a month, that's it? One to three times per month, yeah. I know, that's what I was saying. It seems like you can just get that amount of egg from bread.

Right. Yeah. Right. So therefore, nobody gets Alzheimer's.

You would think. Right. There's a lot of people that don't eat bread, though. Okay, do you eat pasta?

Right. I mean, no, like gluten people, like they don't eat that type of stuff. Well, they eat, well it still has egg. Gluten's not egg.

Most, no, most like breads or pastas and stuff like that have gluten. Right, but gluten is not an egg product. No, I understand what you're saying, but I'm saying... So if they eat gluten-free eggs, or gluten-free bread, they're still getting eggs?

That's the thing of the... That's now, though. They didn't have that back in the day when they were doing this test. You think they just started this test, what, last week?

Right. Just last week. No, it had to be started a long time ago. It's a brand new study.

It says right here, this is brand new. What the fuck did he just say? I'm not sure what's going on with him. Is that mass too tight?

Cutting off the blood to the top of your head? This mass is not going to work, just by the way. Well, we have seven more, or we have eight more. If all the eye things are like this, it's not going to work.

Well, they are different shaped faces, so I imagine the eye holes are different. And he did a terrible job cutting. Yeah, dude, my eyes feel like they're being squished. This is beautiful.

I think it's got your head so big, we might need bigger straps. No, it's the mask, like I can feel it, it's like on my eye. Yeah, when I put it on it, it pokes into the outside edges. Yeah.

He did a terrible job. Trying not to blink. It's children sizes, that's why. Oh yeah, it's kid sizes.

Oh, that's beautiful. Yeah, it's a children mask. But your brother made him pointy in the corners with his scissor cutting. To try to fit more eye.

Instead of round. I mean, I would have cut a rounder side, not... Make him Asian, Princess Peach. He obviously wasn't making crafts for your mom back in the day.

He didn't make anything for his mother back in the day. Alright, investigations involving a popular Winter Park coffee shop has now led to an arrest after police say customers were secretly recording inside a restroom. Customers? Customers said they were being secretly recorded inside a restroom.

Over multiple days, according to an arrest affidavit, hidden cameras were discovered inside the restroom used by Barney's Coffee & Tea customers on Park Ave on March 22nd, March 25th, and again on April 28th. What was the justification for the placement of the cameras? Do we know yet? There is no justification of placement inside a bathroom.

There are rational reasons why you would have to do this. They weren't put in by Barney's. Some dude did it. Right, like an employee?

No, they arrested 27-year-old Nicholas Sebastian on charges of digital voyeurism. Such weird laws nowadays. That's not a weird law. That's not a weird law.

Digital voyeurism, yeah, I mean, why could they, I mean, there's gotta be something else, but... You're taking videos of... I understand, but it had to be called something before digital voyeurism. Yeah, voyeurism, before things were digital.

Yeah. I don't think so. And, uh, weird material for you to go... Peeping Tom?

So, Peeping Tommy? Voyeurism. Yeah. That's the title of the individual, what they're doing.

Police say surveillance video showed Sebastian placing hidden cameras inside the restroom. According to the report, one of his law professors at Berry University later identified him from surveillance images. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. So, the police put cameras in the bathroom to catch the guy placing the cameras in the bathroom?

That's the way you just read it. Maybe there's cameras outside the bathroom, and they see him going in maybe with a camera in his hand, comes back out with no camera in his hand, and then they put out pictures of do you know this guy, and his law professor ratted him out. Hmm. Got it.

Investigators say one memory card contained video of 18 people inside the restroom, I assume at different times. At one time? Yeah. I assume different times.

Dear God. Including men, women, and children. Oh, the children. Now you're in deep, deep, dude.

Oh, yeah. Very, very bad. Very bad. Now it'll be something like videotaping of a minor under the age of, for sexual reasons.

It could be production of child pornography. Yeah, they can get in for that, too. Yeah, production of Diddy child pornography, allegedly. It's his brain broken today.

He can't talk. That wasn't even a complete sentence. That mask is so tight. I had something in my head and I was gonna say it, And then, I was trying to walk it back.

And then, it just went away, it just went, whoop, out of the air. Oh, my God. News of the arrest is alarming some regular customers at the popular Winter Park coffee shop. Another customer told News 6, she believed businesses should take more responsibility for preventing hidden cameras inside restrooms.

What does that mean? See, I wanted to talk to you about this. What does that mean? As a business owner, do you feel it is your responsibility to make sure nobody puts a camera in the bathroom?

Like every day I should go in there and what, scan the bathrooms for recording devices? Get one of those little wand devices that the CIA use? I mean, what are we talking about here? Apparently it's your responsibility.

No, that woman should just stay home and buy a helmet. You know what? You'd probably be scared to do it now because who knows what goes on in that bathroom. Hey, pull that back down.

No, I'm not pulling it down. Are you on camera? No. All right.

I'm just putting it on you guys now. That should fall on the business owner, she said. You're running an establishment. You have bathrooms.

You need to do your due diligence. Due diligence. Apparently, you need to go in there every 10 minutes. Right.

Oh, there's another good question. How often do we have to scan? Is it after every person that goes in and out? You should tell Keanu that it's his job now.

That's his job now. And you should literally give him a stick and say it's a wand. But not have it be an actual wand. Tell him he has to go in there with everyone who goes to the bathroom to make sure they don't install a camera.

That kid gets so tortured, man. I told my wife a story about something that I did to him years ago. Did you hear about this? This is funny.

So he plugs in the alarm upstairs, but he doesn't do it fast enough. And for whatever reason, the alarm goes off, right? Yeah, Palmer heard about it. So he calls me.

I know this story. It's a great story. He calls me. He's like, look, the alarm went off.

I don't know what to do. I'm like, well, how long was the alarm going off? Was it more than three seconds? And he says, yeah, it was definitely more than three seconds.

I said, all right, I just need you to remain calm. They're coming. There's going to be about seven to 12 SWAT cars that are going to be there because they think you're being robbed. I need you to walk outside.

Keep me on speakerphone. Go outside. Okay. Turn and face the building.

Okay. Put your hands on your head. Okay. Now get down on your knees.

And I finally let him in on the fact that, all right, they're not coming. Just go to work, dude. Yeah, I remember that. We were passing that video around each other.

Yeah, I was going to say, and he has a video of it. Yeah, of course I have a video of it. News 6 contacted Barney's management for comment. They said the lady was crazy, too.

They're not doing that yet. Good. They said, "Thank you for the inquiry. " Yeah, that's at Barney's.

What a place for that to happen at. Now, one of the comments said it wasn't exclusively Barney's bathroom. It was in like a hotel lobby, and there's a coffee shop, which is Barney's. There's a place that sells snacks and stuff.

Oh, that sucks, because Barney's getting bad publicity. Yeah, Barney's is getting the blame for it. It must be closest to Barney's. Oh, that's not right.

So, it's not, that'd be like you having to check the smoke shop next door back. Right, yeah, that's not right. Or you should start doing that too. No, I'm not doing that.

They probably definitely have one. It's all caring to buy a helmet and stay home. All right, it's gator season in the state of Florida. Oh!

Applications are now open statewide according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Applications are now being accepted for both the statewide alligator harvest program and the alligator super hunt program. Alligator Harvest. I like how they- They make it sound nice.

Yeah, murder the gators is what it should be called. Hunters have until May 18th to submit one for phase one application for the statewide alligator harvest program. Those selected through a random drawing will be allowed to hunt in one alligator management unit or county. Do you know how they kill the alligators?

Yeah, bang stick. Bang stick, right. Phil, do you know what a bang stick is? It's not something for your movies.

Dead inside me. It's how they measure, he thinks, in the movies. If you are this big, you get the bang. All right, so an alligator super hunt application period runs through June 8th.

Hunters can pay to apply multiple times. So the first one, you pay one time, you're allowed to go hunt and get one gator. And they tell you where you can go, that's the harvest part. Super hunt, you can apply as many times as you want, And you get more gators, plus you can go to anywhere you want.

Why even have the first category? I don't understand. Because there's certain areas that have more alligators than others and they want to make sure enough people go to that place to harvest. Okay.

To harvest? Harvest, yes. So they give out less super gator applications. You guys can go kill any gator you want anywhere.

Right. Those chosen may be allowed to hunt in most alligator management units and counties across Florida. that was itchy so see the difference is super hunt is almost anywhere in the state and a regular permit is you're locked into one specific county or water source gotcha is hunting on you guys list of stuff to do no does your wife like to go hunting no we've never gone hunting never hiking not hunting very outdoorsy did you get berries on the way there did you eat anything on the path No. Okay.

No, you don't eat wild berries. That's not a good idea. You don't know the difference? I figured you would know the difference by now.

Just don't eat the berries. Edible thing. Well, there's some you can eat. Yeah, okay, but you don't need to.

You ate before you started the hike. That's not a real hike. But what if you get hungry? That's a walk.

Okay, a walk. You take trail mix? Because you're on the trail. You do take trail mix.

That's a thing. Bag labeled trail mix. Nice. Have you ever had Peruvian food?

I don't recall. We passed a Peruvian restaurant, but now I don't remember where it was. probably anywhere on obt no we weren't an obt we were uh we were where'd we go we went oh sanford there's one in sanford oh okay peruvium right he's going to peru soon oh are you and are you sleeping in the tent or the three layer of hotels that are hung on the side i have no idea i'm not in charge of any of that - You haven't asked? - No, I don't ask.

" - You just climb the rope. - Hmm. - I don't feel you're strong enough to climb the rope, Greg. - I can climb a rope.

- I see what we're doing next time Greg's on the show. - Yeah. - I need you to hang a rope in that tree out there. - I can climb a rope.

- Got it. - See if he can climb it. - Peruvian, huh? That's gonna be where the bang bang's at, huh?

- What does that mean? - The white bang bang? And Tourette's? This is amazing.

You guys don't know what bang bang is? The bang bang? Bang bang shrimp? No.

It's that spicy shrimp you can get at the... No, the pure white. Come on, guy. Peruvian.

Oh, Peruvian bang bang. Yeah. Sorry, you didn't really say it all as one word. All you said was bang bang.

The bang bang. We're talking about him going to Peru, Peruvian. Well, I thought you were asking if he was going to bang bang in one of the tents. I'm sure he will.

We're talking about the white stuff. I mean, the white, the powders, whatever. Bang bang on the side of a mountain is on his list. Yeah, I'm sure it is.

I'm sure it is. Well, anyway, I saw a TV show, the three-level one looks quite nice, actually. Oh, okay. Tent?

No, it's a three-level thing that you sleep in on the side of a mountain. Oh, like a bungalow. They bring you food and stuff. Oh, that'd be good for me.

I could do that, yeah. You climb down, you're in there, it's three levels. I mean, you can walk around. Inside the tent, I don't think you're walking much.

Yeah, yeah. How many times have these houses fallen down off the mountain? Well, it's still a tent-like material, so it just has three floors. Yeah, I'm not staying in that.

No, I'm not either. You look out, I mean... I'll send you guys photos. What do you have to go to the bathroom?

Is it just a hole on the bottom floor? Yeah, just let it fly. Not that kind of hole. It is.

There's just nobody on the other side. Now I gotta click the box for sexually explicit material. Great. It's like Barney's, man.

You got a video over there, Phil? I mean, after what we were just talking about, I could have one. You want me to find one? Some outtakes from your movie.

Something from the set of the zombie movie. Oh, I have a photo. Somebody sent me the movie poster for your new movie, Dead Inside Me. Yeah, I saw that.

Did you get it, too? Yeah, I got it, too. How did he get your number? It's beautiful.

No, he sent it to me via Insta, I think. Oh. Oh. All right, so we will put...

How do you know I was having a movie? Am I getting paid? That was where you were the other day. Yeah.

I better be getting paid. On the set of your movie, Dead Inside Me. Can you see that? Yep.

That is amazing. Wow. That is your new zombie porn. Nice.

Dead Inside Me. Dead Inside Me. I'm glad my character's got all these different things going on. Coming soon!

Did he spell it right? No, but nevertheless. Nevertheless, still funny. I'll throw that up here in 26 minutes.

All right, on to cigar news. California cigar tax rate is decreasing this summer. Oh, surprise, surprise? Why is that a surprise?

No, I'm just saying it's a surprise. - But why are you surprised? - Because California would never bring their stuff down. That is a surprise.

- Oh, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration has announced its annual adjustment to the cigar tax rate. Do they do this every year in California? - I don't know, but like the drop was nominal. - Yeah, it's like nothing.

It's like a couple of cents. - I think they went from like 58 to like 52 or something like that. - Oh, well, let's read on and see. - Please read.

- And it's a bit of a good news for cigar smokers. Well, not terribly. 27% to the percent of the wholesale cost, sorry, to 5108%. Yeah, so like a three-point swing about.

Like a three-point swing. 51%. That's crazy. That's the lower one.

Yeah, that's crazy. You wouldn't even really notice the savings. Yeah. Maybe if you were buying like $1,000 worth of cigars every time.

No, I mean, you would. So if it's a $20 cigar, you're going to see like a $3 swing, because it's off of the wholesale basis. A change that will save consumers at least a little bit of money. 16.

Yeah, that's nominal. Yeah, you're not going to. By half-wheel estimates. Since California's tobacco tax rates, the percentage of the wholesale price, the higher the MSRP, the greater the savings.

There is no savings because you still got to pay for the SKU and the box and all that good stuff. Well, this is for the consumer. Well, you said wholesale. It's based on the wholesale price, but the consumer is the one paying the taxes at point of purchase.

Wow. California adjusted cigar tax annually, and it is based on the cigarette tax, how that rate relates to the average price of a pack of cigarettes. Oh, that seems bad. Doesn't seem like they should correlate.

No, why are those two connected? Seems like they're completely two different things. So if the cigarette price goes up or down, the tax goes up or down? I have no idea, but they shouldn't correlate.

3% in parts of 2016 and '17 to a high of 65, Which went into effect on July 1st, 2017. Oh, my lord. I don't know why anybody lives in California. Thank God we're in Florida, baby.

Oh, good. But this, I was correct, this isn't like the tariff, or I guess it is like the consumer, the end consumer is the one that ends up getting screwed on this. Always. Isn't that true?

Just gets passed on until the final user. Right. But some of these states have got floor tax. So like, they don't actually collect the tax to be paid upon sale to the consumer.

It's based off of whatever your inventory is, right? 3% now, and you have to pay it. - Yeah, I've had customers tell me before, can't buy anything this week, we just paid the taxes. - Right.

- Yup. - Well, that stinks. All right, Oscar Valladares Tobacco & Company partners with Voluts et Vitolas for distribution in France. Oh, nice.

V-O-L-U-T-E-S, Voluts. El Septimo name change? No, no, El Septimo. Totally different, dude.

Oscar Valladares Tobacco & Company cigars have begun arriving in French cigar shops after the company signed a distribution agreement with Voluts et Vitolas. So the Vitolas I know, what's V-O-L, well, I'm asking the wrong guys, nevermind. Hello, my name is Luciano, I have a new French company. Stop!

I don't like to dub the stuff you say. It's a pain in the butt. Oh, now you're doing no work. No, I just don't want to have to look for you saying one word.

You have to watch the show though. Yeah, I don't like to re-watch the entire show. I already went through it once. The company's debut in France is led by the Leaf by Oscar Toro.

Available in Connecticut, Corojo, Maduro, and Sumatra blends. anybody? It's like a $10 cigar in the United States, no? Freedom dollars.

Yeah, but we're going on a French price. Yeah, it's French now, bro. That's in French. You gotta give a French price.

Okay. Fourteen. And you have to say it with a French accent. I don't do accents.

La Fourteen. What did you say? What was that? It is the, as you say, $14, you say?

They say la in front of everything. La 14? La 14. No, no.

You? 15. La 15. La 15.

No, no, you're both wrong. 92. Oh, Greg was closer. And freedom dollars.

Freedom dollars. Freedom dollars, man. It's the whole world's on freedom dollars. S.

and beyond for its unique packaging as each cigar is wrapped in a tobacco leaf. Oh, I wonder if the French will try to smoke them wrapped in a leaf now, too. Like the dip when they first got here. Yeah.

Oh, this tastes terrible. Why is it wrapped in the leaf? La leaf? Also coming to France is a bundle cigar called Plan B.

Wow. Yeah, something missed out there, right? Wow. that's uh the day after thing you know what that's yeah i know what plan b is yeah yeah wow you think somebody would have checked that huh no they they checked it afterwards like man we fucked up maybe in france it means something completely different the americans they give us a cigar called the plan b yeah that's what they should have done that is when we ask for help in the war that is our plan b yeah that's why we give you the but in america it is a pill Oh, how strange.

, it's also offering in a 6x52 Toro size with three blends, Connecticut, Maduro, and Corojo, that cigar is priced at? $9. La $9. Huh?

Still France. Oh. I'm gonna go $20. 96.

S. as well, so I did it in American currency, $9. 96 in Freedom Dollars. In Freedom Dollars.

But this American cigar is now offered in France. I see. This is the price in France. Did you think Freedom Dollars meant French, Greg?

No, I don't know what he's talking about. American money is called Freedom Dollars. USD. Yes.

Freedom Dollars. Freedom Dollars. Who coined this Freedom Dollars? Everybody does.

I've never heard this term used before. You know the guys that rushed the White House? They called Freedom Dollars. The guy with the buffalo hat on that stormed the gates?

There's also freedom measurements. Yeah. Yeah, no, our measurements are just wrong. No, they're not.

Why are you against US measurements? Because it's silly. No, it's not. So do you have a tape measure that shows one millimeter?

So you have inches that convert to feet, right? Correct. Feet convert to yards. A good point of measurement, would that be like 10 inches equals one foot?

No, it's 12 inches equal one foot, right? Okay, that's fine. So then you have feet that convert to a yard, right? Okay, so good conversion, but five, maybe 10 feet to, no, it's three.

It doesn't make any sense. Sure, that's just the rules. Yeah. Wait, tell me how millimeters work.

He's saying because at millimeters, everything's on 10. Right. But why is that? That's just a random thing, too.

That's not random. It's the same thing spread out over all of it. So there's no change in the metrics. Three yards.

Correct. There's no change in the metrics. Gotcha. So 10 millimeters make what?

A meter. No, 10 millimeters make a centimeter. 10 centimeters make a meter. 10 meters, I don't know.

Yeah, I don't see it. How many meters in a mile? Or what is the meter? Okay, wait, wait.

What is the metric equivalent of a mile? Don't look it up. Well, that's easy. That's a kilometer.

Kilometer's not a mile. No, it's not. I said, what is the equivalent? It's a fraction.

Because they don't correlate. They don't communicate with each other, right? They don't run in the same whole numbers. How many yards in a mile?

Oh, I don't know. I could have to look that up. 5,280. I mean, these are just things people should know.

Yeah, but no. See, that in itself is just a silly number. How long have you been an American? About 44 years.

You should know these things. Why? Because you're an American, for goodness sakes! Greg, how much does a Whopper cost?

Oh, I wouldn't know that. Okay, how much do your boots cost? cost uh 120 how come you know that but you don't know how many how many boots not whoppers how many how many dollars uh in a five dollar bill what yeah follow me here how many how many dollars in a five dollar okay all right we can play this game sure greg would five how many dollars in a ten dollar bill ten how many fives in a ten dollar bill two why is all that okay but you can't handle the inches and inches. How many dollars are in a pound?

How many dollars are in a pound? Yeah. How many dollars are in a pound? How many pints are in a pound?

How many pints? I don't know what's before the pound. Oh, you're talking about for conversion rate in the United States dollars to pounds? Yeah.

I'd have to look that up because it's constantly changing. Because you're American and you know what's in a mile and a yard and a dollar and a whopper and your boots. He didn't know the whopper. What the fuck?

He should know the Whopper, then. I don't buy Whoppers. You should buy Whoppers for the next show for us. Everything's not a pound.

I mean, they gotta have cents and stuff, don't they have coins? Yeah, I think it's like pence or something like that. Oh, I thought you were trying to say pints. Well, how about this one, right?

36, I know that, because I had to go to the bank to go get cash. Yeah, you're getting ready to go to Peru. Well, she's taking American. They take American money everywhere.

Not always. Yeah. Not always. Yeah.

American money is universal. It's freedom dollars. Freedom dollars. You should always travel with a hundred dollars in your pocket when you go to a foreign country.

And smaller bills. Always smaller bills. Hey, will you take this one... Hey, take one of your watches that looks expensive.

That could help you out too. No, you wear an inexpensive watch and not a lot of jewelry. Well, what are you gonna do there? You don't wear any of this when you travel.

That watch might get you across a border in a heartbeat. That was a border in a heartbeat and you're out of money. Mmm. Tablicalera de Garcia, Flora de Copan resumed shipments to Altidus, USA, and JR Cigar.

Yeah, this is big. Yeah, so this is that guy that stole all the money and then they took the factories. Yep. You with us over there, Phil?

Yeah. Alright. Flora de Copan, a cigar factory in Honduras, and Tablicalera de Garcia, a factory in the Dominican Republic, have resumed shipments to cigars in Tablicalera, USA. S.

Office of Foreign Asset Control, or OFAC, granted a temporary license to the Tablicalera, the Spanish-based company that operates both factories, which allows the company to do business with American companies until 2028. So that's just two years. So Spanish factory owns the one factory in Honduras and the other factory in Dominican Republic. Okay.

So then they gave, well, I'm asking more than telling. So then they gave a license to the Spanish guys that you can make cigars in these two countries. Yeah. All right.

Makes sense to me. What does that, what does that mean for AJ? Because that's where they moved all their stuff. Uh, AJ, uh, only AJ.

He'll probably retain a portion of it. Yeah. Would they be, okay, let's talk cigars here for a minute, I think, Greg. Would they be smarter than to...

Okay, let's back up here. You think the tobacco is still at these factories that they had from before? You think it's been dispersed or swiped or stolen or rotted? That's a really good question.

I would say it's probably still there. I mean, they may have sold some of it, but if everything got frozen, like, if you're not able to trade, you're not able to trade. Well, that's the next question, then. How locked down is it?

Did they send military there to patrol the grounds? They just put a chain on the door and go, "Nobody can come in," and then nobody's been there for whatever it is, 12 weeks. That's another really good question. I don't know, brother.

Because then I would go get the tobacco, not sell it. Like if I was just some guy in Dominican Republic. Crack the chain and just take it out. I'm sure there would be, not necessarily like government guards there, but like guards that are employed by the factory to make sure nobody's taking it.

How does the cousin, who's one of the guards, tell you when most people aren't there? It's usually after 5 o'clock. What did he say? It's usually after 5 o'clock?

Usually after 5 o'clock. Oh, yeah, I figure it's at night. I'm not familiar with Dominican factories because I haven't been there, but I can tell you how it is in Nicaragua, right? Okay, let's say it's in Nicaragua.

So in Nicaragua, your security system is a guy that stays there all night long on a small factory. On a big factory, it's multiple guys that are there to secure the space. Skip's got a guy. Right, that he stays there.

And then they had the bicycle guys with the whistles. But they had a problem at one point with the guy, because the guy would go off to meet his girlfriend and leave the place, all of a sudden he just wasn't on the cameras for a while. No, no, he didn't leave to go and do... Oh, I'm trying to be nice.

Okay, yeah, no, it was on premise. Yeah, yeah, well, I was trying to not say that part, but, you know, now something else I have to edit it, 40 minutes. Let's talk more about that. " So Juan leaves the door, Pepe and whoever else comes cracks the chain and takes 40 bundles of tobacco out.

40 bundles of tobacco? Well, 40 Pallones, I don't care, I'm not being- 40 Pallones? That's a lot. I know it is, it takes a really long time, this girl has got problems.

Yeah, no, so like, the value of tobacco, let's say it's like, I don't know, $15 a pound, do you realize how much tobacco you would actually have to move for it to be a large dollar amount? You would need a large truck, a force of people. Yeah, but a guy with his own little factory that has one and a half rollers just went to Pallones where he can make free cigars. I'm not saying it's all gone.

I don't think any of it's gone. You don't think any of it's gone? No, I think that if you own that factory, it's a secure factory and nobody is taking your shit. Well, if you own it, you're not allowed to go back to it.

No, no, no. No, you weren't allowed to sell out of it. No, they locked the doors and chained them, I read. They kicked everybody out.

Oh, I don't remember that part. So then you would think it would be up to the government to put a guard there. Or the local militia or whatever they happen to have. I don't know.

So would the tobacco be bad? Nobody's been flipping it, nobody's been rolling it, nobody's done anything to it? They didn't put those little pods in there that'd explode and catch on fire? Most of it's stored in bales, like it's already packaged up, it's huge, big bags of tobacco that's been pressed and condensed and stored.

Right, but don't they, I mean, I've never been because you guys won't send me, but don't they still have to flip it or something? Not once it's at that stage. No, when it's in the bales, no. No, flipping happens in the fermentation process.

So maybe there's tobacco that's in the future, the stages before that that still have to be done. Pre, in the pre-industry. Pre-embargo, I don't know what it's called. Pre-industry?

Pre-industry. Like I said, I've never been, Phil, I don't know, I'm making this stuff up. If the tobacco is being fermented, it's in pylones. But once it goes through that process, it gets stored in huge bales.

Okay, so I imagine this big factory has tobacco in different stages. I would assume it's possible, unless it doesn't. It just stores tobacco and buys from pre-industry. But I would assume that their factories definitely were processing pre-industry tobacco.

So then you think with this open from until 2028, that is, it's not like, okay, you can open, but you can only use the tobacco you have. Mike, you can't use the tobacco you have. You can't bring any more tobacco in. They would be completely 100% operational.

We can do whatever it was we were supposed to do. Is that what they were told? They can only use that of which they had? I'm asking what your opinion is as a professional who's been to these countries and seen these factories.

Well, I would say if they're open for trade, they're open for trade. They can purchase and sell. They can acquire whatever they need. So the smart thing to do is sell everything.

Liquidate by the end of 2028. No, no. Why not? So they have a temporary license in place for them to gain the permanent license.

It's just like acquiring a license in the United States. Yeah. For beer and wine, right? It's a trial period.

You get a temporary one as the paperwork is being processed for the permanent one. The smart business is to stay in business and get the license to be permanent. They need to watch the news and see how the trial's going to see if they're going to take the factory again. Well, who knows how that shakes out?

But I think that this is a step in the right direction where they'll be able to commence with trade and eventually get licensing again. Yeah, I think what's happened by them getting that temporary is that they've already separated themselves. Yeah. Oh, wait, we have good news.

Separately, the UK Office of Financial Sanctions Implemented has issued a similar license that is valid to 2031. I don't know how that works. The country says you go in 2028, you have to stop. No, no.

UK said 2031. I'm still good. Love the British. Well, any license...

I got another three years out of this. Any license has an expiration date anyways. Yes, but two different countries have, gave them two different licenses to do the same thing that expire on two different dates. Yeah, to operate in commerce in their country.

Did you get it? Well, the first one was to operate the factory in the country. Right. So, let's say they do not get another license.

So, in 2028, they have to stop working at the factory again. Right, but they will wind up getting a permanent license by that time. You don't know that for sure. Oh my God.

If I had been to a factory that made cigars, I would have been to a factory, but you guys won't let me go. " In trouble. Yeah, but if he stays in China, the Americans and the British and whoever else I just said can't get him. Yeah.

There's no extradition from the Communists. Yeah, but I would much rather be in an American or British prison than a Chinese prison. He's not really in prison. He's one of them.

I'm sure there is extradition when it's federal. No. No, it's not. Why does the Chinese care about our federal laws?

Yeah. You don't think Interpol works with FBI? That's international. Okay, I'm sorry.

Interpol is in Europe. That's not Chinese. Mm-hmm. Okay, what are they?

Inspectors? The inspectorism? This is amazing. This is absolutely amazing.

" We've had this discussion. He's from Hong Kong. The Chinese version of Interpol is called inspectorism. They're inspectors.

Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Because he saw, what was the name of the movie? Rush Hour.

Rush Hour. He knows all about Chinese police now. Specterism. Well, I watched the other one he was in, too.

Oh, what was that one? What was the first one? I was like, what was the very first one he ever did? I don't know.

Bronx. Rumble in the Bronx. Oh, Rumble in the Bronx. Yeah.

He was in Specter then, too. Well, he didn't get promoted much between the two movies, then. No, he didn't. What's the highest you can go?

Chief Inspector-ism. Inspectorism level three. Alright, this also includes the local Cuban cigar distributors in various countries, some of which have come under increased banking scrutiny due to their owners. Alright, it's time for the industry's favorite game, what's the score?

Yeah, Greg, a little more enthusiasm. This is the It's the industry's favorite game. Yeah, Greg. There are brands that are playing this as we do the show.

Yeah, I get it. This is as excited as I get about anything. All right, we're gonna try again. We need a little more out of it.

You're not gonna get any more volume. Mikey, you want to help us out here? Here we go. All right, so when we do it, you yell, "What's the score," okay?

" Thank you, Michael. See, he did a good job. He does a good job. March 1st Cigars, March 27th, 2012, Brooks Winnington Cigars, is the Brooks Winnington Cigars.

- Why is he called that? - He's got a subcontractor. - Oh, apparently. Dominican Republic, the cigar is called the Second Growth.

- Okay. - Are you familiar with this cigar, Greg? - No. - Phil, I'm not going to ask you.

You're over there with your inspectorisms. - Sounds like a bad physical condition. - Yeah, it almost sounds like the thing after the Plan B. - The Second Growth.

- The Second Growth. - You're up, Greg. - Somebody vote. - Oh, no.

You go first. Oh, if you would hit the test button, I have set up the fireworks for you if you by chance win. Oh. You should know how they operate.

I don't know. We stole them from you. So, I'm going to guess it's his Cigar 91. Oh, is that the cleaning?

Yeah. All right, turn it off. Great. All right.

What did you say, Phil? 91. Phil says 91. 90.

First of the information, second growth, it is Dominican Republic Factory's Occidental Cigar Factory. Are you familiar with them? No. Wrappers, Ecuador's Habano Hybrid.

Binders, Dominican Republic. Fillers, Honduran, and Dominican Republic. It is a 7 and 7, 8 by 54. Churchill Grande.

They smoked two cigars. Ninety-one. Ninety. Clue number one: Rich Complex Blend Dominican and Honduran Fillers under the Ecuador Habano Hybrid Wrapper.

Give it a layered profile with depth that keeps evolving. Ninety-two. Ninety-three. He's just playing you.

He's not even listening to what I'm saying. This Churchill Grande size delivers a long, slow burn with a luxurious feel that matches the high-end positioning. 98. 98 for a cigar cult.

Like nobody in this room has heard of. Well, I just want to see where Greg was going to go. Best cigar cult ever made sought after in shops throughout the world. I just want to see where Greg was going to go.

Oh my God. Did you tell him? I'm playing him and he says 98. 98.

400. My God. 93. Next.

Third clue. This $78 price tag hits hard. Expectations are sky high and not every smoker is going to feel the experience justifies the cost. You say $78?

Yes. A stick? Yes. Oh, wow.

Freedom money. Freedom money. Freedom dollars. Non-Peruvian.

Oh, you need me to guess? Yeah. Mmm. Sorry, your last score was 98 if you didn't remember.

Yeah, 93. Ah. I'm gonna go 93 as well. Alright, final thought.

I have to say the construction, burn, draw, and smoke production were all phenomenal on this cigar. Oh, wow. None of them could be any better. Unfortunately, the joy I felt in those regards just does not carry over to the flavors that are present.

As with most cigars blended by Kellner, oh, at least I've heard of him, I found the second growth to be overly simplistic in terms of flavors and profile and the absolute monstrous size, and you have almost two and a half hours of wonderful constructed monotony. Is it a bad cigar? Not by any means. In fact, if you like the profile I described above and are willing to pay the price, you will probably love it as it really all there is to it.

- Wow. - But I seem to consistently be hoping for more complexity, more flavors, and more shifts in what I was tasting, and unfortunately, I was constantly let down. - Oh boy. - 85.

86. - You went the wrong way. - Yeah, baby! - 76.

- Oh, wow. No, no, not for him, don't put the firework for him. Oh, okay. No, no, you can still win the second one, pick it back up.

Oh, okay, it's not working. See, that's why we're not paying. Okay. Even our tech guy can't get it to work.

It's all right, it doesn't have to work often. Oh. Yeah, I don't know why. That's weird.

Hmm. Would we like our check back, please? You have to get down there and shake them. You still haven't fucking paid for them.

They don't work! That's weird. They work before you touch them. All right.

The one time you used them at your house. Mm-hmm. You're lucky you didn't catch your bedroom on fire. They were in his bedroom?

You know they weren't. No, they weren't. They weren't in his bedroom. You know they weren't at some point.

I saw them. They were not in his bedroom. You know he had to use them for something else. He's not gonna miss an opportunity.

Set off fireworks. I know some stories. That's an upgrade from what he told me. May 12, 2024, Patrick LaGrie de Cigars.

Oh, apparently he's got his own company too. The Sacrificio Junior. You're first now, Greg. I'm a 100.

They're making a mockery of my game. I'm going to guess 76. Cigar Reviews, Cef, whatever I said it was, Country of Origins, Nicaragua, Tabacalera, Oliva de Nicaragua, Rappers, Ecuadorian, Connecticut, Binder, Cameroon, Viller, Condega, and Jalapa, it's a 5x50, they smoked 3. Bootsy?

You're first, Greg. Why am I first? Because I won the last game, so we switched. Oh, you said 76?

I'm gonna go 75. I mean, it's a good factory. You're not going to go higher? No.

Okay. I'm going to go to 84. Oh. What did you say?

75. Excellent construction from start to finish, clean seams, sturdy ash, and a flawless burn draw. Makes the cigar performance exactly how you want it to. Clue number one.

76. 84. Clue number two, creamy, approachable profile. Notes of bread, cream, and light almonds create a smooth, easygoing smoke that's balanced and inviting, especially in the first half.

84. He's cheating. He's cheating, Palmer. How can you cheat, unless you can see the answer?

He's just saying the numbers I say. Uh, yeah, 84. Third clue, lacks progression and depth. The profile stays fairly safe, with creaminess fading into toast and pepper, and the final third doesn't deliver a strong or memorable finish.

84. That was the last clue, now we're going on final thought, right? Correct. 84.

The Sacrificio Jr. is a solid cigar and does what it seemingly aims to do quite well, which is offer a milder profile, The flavors are solid, but not overwhelming. The construction is very good, and the overall experience is a very good one. If there is a knock on the cigar, it's that it already exists in seemingly every humidor in the country, whether it be a cigar store or a desktop humidor at a golf course, which leads me to wonder how it will stand out, especially at a $15 price point, as I didn't pick up anything that differentiated it from any number of similar blends that would make me pick up this one at a premium shot.

Yeah. 85. 84. He went the right way.

88. Oh, Greg won? No, you didn't win. I said 85.

He said 84. Yeah. Oh, that's right. You did win.

Sorry. Only one of them is going off. It's good enough. All right.
