Cigar Hustlers Podcast 297 Please Stand By

Cigar Hustlers Podcast 297 Please Stand By

Episode Summary

Episode 297 of A Cigar Hustler's Podcast is a loose, in-studio hangout with Mike Stepankiewicz, Mike "Reverend BDP" Palmer and Phil that opens with the wrap-up of the shop's guess-the-weight contest (16.1 grams), a plug for the Patreon "red meat lovers" segment, and a running gag about naming a San Andreas line after cuts of steak. The crew also grudgingly gives a free plug to regular customer Anthony's Sky High Comedy night in Deltona, Florida — while publicly holding him to his promise to join the shop's private lounge now that Freak Show Wine is on the shelf.

Much of the first half is pure locker-room banter: a Saturday night out in New Smyrna Beach that ended in midnight drunk-dials to Greg, Boots and Brett from Tobacology; a mysteriously inflated bar tab; Palmer's post-weekend acid reflux and chesty cough (COVID test negative); Halloween decorating with a 13-foot Jack Skellington on the roof; and Pop Warner football practice gone barefoot. Technical gremlins with the studio cameras run throughout the episode and become their own running bit. The guys also tease an upcoming announcement and a trip to Wisconsin.

The news segment is the meat for cigar fans. RoMa Craft Tobac announces Craft Marquette, a new series letting consumers taste a blend at a specific point in its development, debuting with the Nonno — a 5x52 robusto with a hybrid Jalapa, Nicaragua wrapper over a Brazilian mata fina binder and a filler of Brazilian mata fina, Dominican corojo 99 ligero and Nicaraguan criollo viso, created by Skip Martin to mark the birth of his first grandchild and sold through Riverside Cigars. They also cover Scandinavian Tobacco Group's softer Q2 2023 numbers (revenue down 2.3%, EBITDA margin down, guidance lowered) and run through STG's sprawling retail and brand portfolio, plus the shipping of Luciano Cigars' Why Panda — a collaboration with former intern turned brand ambassador Lennox Panda Yan, using an Ecuadorian corojo 98 wrapper with a Brazilian arapiraca and Ecuadorian sumatra double binder — and the CLE/Asylum PCA 2023 exclusive heading to stores.

They close with a Florida-man story about a Deltona car-burglary suspect who posted his stolen Mercedes-Benz on social media, Listener of the Week Peter Frisbee, Shop of the Week Lake Country Cigars in Wisconsin (where they'll appear September 28), and the reveal of a new War Bear box-pressed corona gordo debuting at that event.

Welcome to the Cigar Hustlers Podcast, episode 297, where we bring you the latest news and insights from the world of premium cigars. In this episode, we dive into big stories of the week. The King Mike Stepankiewicz and Reverend BDP Mike Palmer are two dynamic individuals who co-host the Captivating Cigar Hustlers Podcast. And me, I'm Phil.

So grab your favorite smoke, sit back, and join us for another exciting episode of Cigar Hustlers Podcast. We'll be right back to our next episode of StarCast. 1 gram. 1 gigawatts?

So the big contest is over. Yes, it's over. No more reading the contest. No more reading the contest.

And the winner is Michael. I will do that. Oh, I know. I haven't done that yet.

I remember. You knew that. You had to put me on blast though. Uh oh.

Yes. 1 what was it? 1 Grams. 1 Grams.

Today on the Patreon, we're doing the meat lovers. The red meat lovers. The red meat lovers. I think this is called the Porterhouse.

The Toro Grande. The Porterhouse. They all have their different names? Yes.

There's the ribeye, the porterhouse, the pork chop, the chicken wing. Oh. I feel like we should run an entire San Andreas line. Yes.

And it should be called like the impossible porterhouse. Oh. Like it's vegan. The impossible.

Like it's all vegan? Sirloin. Oh, I get it now. You get it?

I get it. You get it? Where should I put this? Just leave on the desk like you always do, Michael.

I'll pick you up after you leave. You're such a good friend. I appreciate it. Well, tobacco is vegan.

It is. Yes. All natural. So all you vegan people out there smoke cigars.

That was the big vegan community. Are you okay? You didn't like that? You okay, Phil?

You all right over there? No, whatever. I'm so angry, so angry. Hit the button, Michael.

That's right. Trying to hold my breath while I push the button. That's right. You choke in silence, Michael.

People like the button. This is terrible. So, uh, what are we getting into today? So yeah, no, the thing, the whole, I'm gonna do it.

Don't worry, we'll announce it on the show. Oh, the contest. Yes, yes. We'll announce it on the show in November.

This isn't like that Porsche thing. You know, Anthony Iracat has been up my ass about promoting his thing. No, yeah, we're not doing that. He can pay.

He can pay? He can pay. We don't promote things for free. He's all over my Facebook club.

Is he? Yes. He's so ridiculous. Let's see here.

I don't even know. It's a comedy, comedy night. If you can mention on podcast, that's all it says. This is a picture.

Sky High Comedy, yada yada. , 7:30, somewhere in New Smyrna, 140 South Atlantic Ave, Deltona, Florida. Oh, it's in Deltona. Is he a comedian?

He is now. He's working on it. He's working on it. He's, you know, he's a little rough around the edges, but he's trying.

Oh, a celebrity. We should have him call in. We'll give him that. No, he's not.

He's not. He's not at that level. He's got to keep going. He's going to get this one promotion.

And here's why I'm going to give him this promotion. He does this weekly. He does his what? He does this comedy thing weekly.

Well, I know that the promo code is CIGAR. I guess, I don't know if you can call or whatever. Apparently it's on a rooftop somewhere. Deltona, is there a Rooftop Bar?

386-259-6000. Phil grew up around here, where is there a Rooftop Bar in Deltona? Tickets available at Eventbrite under Sky High Comedy. Maybe Cigar Hustler.

Sky High. Oh, he does it on the roof here, that'd be nice. So listen, listen, he's been up my ass about this, okay, so we've done it. We've done it, he's done it.

Now, Anthony has also said, give me camera three, goddammit. Wait a second, wait a second. Give me camera three! He doesn't pay attention over there.

Yeah. What is he? I'm having problems there. Working on his fingernails.

I'm trying to fucking punch him. Anthony has also said that he was going to join the private lounge. Yeah. And he has not.

Oh. And he has not joined the private lounge. He said to me. Yes.

Get my wife Freak Show Wine in this shop and I will join the private lounge. We did, didn't we? It's here. And we have Freak Show Wine.

We have Freak Show Wine. Done. We're going to see this private lounge commitment from you, Anthony. So basically, now this week's show is you just airing your grievances with the customer base you have upstairs.

Yeah, pretty much. So, hey, we're going to go ahead and promote your comedy thing just because we're good people, right? We're going to do it gratis. I hope you do have a very successful turnout at the Sky High Comedy Club.

And, uh, now the ball's in your court. So, if you want to go back to camera two... Take the camera two, come on, camera two, your nails look fine. Yeah, your nails look fine.

Does someone have a cutter? Why are you punching that? Yeah, of course I have a cutter. It's got a pigtail.

Can I please borrow? I'm in the industry. Twist the pigtail off the end. So of course I have a cutter.

I twisted it, but it doesn't... Would you like to use my cutter? Please. Even though you call yourself industry and you don't...

That's Phil. Don't have a cutter. Oh, but you're Phil. I know I'm Phil.

You're Phil. And he doesn't know about the microphones. Boots is industry. God.

We called you Saturday night. You did call me Saturday night. You were playing video games, it'll look like. Yes, first of all, you called me from your phone at midnight.

Was it that late? Yes. I thought it was just after 10. It was midnight, I told you.

You were drunk calling people. You were drunk dialing. You were drunk dialing. First of all.

Second of all, you never call me at midnight. No, that's how I knew you'd answer. So yeah, if you call me at midnight, I'm thinking there's a dead hooker in the trunk and we need to bury a body. We were singing Friends in Low Places.

I don't know what happened, but she's dead. Well, you were still awake. And I'd be like, so what did I do? I answered the phone.

Yes. We all sang to you. I saw that you three idiots were together. And my wife and the young lady who used to live with us, Megan, was there.

Oh, I didn't see that. I just saw... Oh, I kept turning the phone. I thought I got everybody.

Oh, no, I was gone at that point. I saw you, Thing 1, Thing 2. Chet was there too, right? Yeah, Chet was there.

Yeah, I saw the three of you. And Alec, which I don't think you know Alec. No, I don't know Alec. I said, "Okay, Palmer's fine," and I hung up the phone.

So, you were waving around an empty phone to people. Oh. Yeah. It looked like someone was on the phone.

" And it's glowing. So, then we called Greg. Yes. He also answered.

And the pitch black. Pitch black, couldn't see a thing. Yes. And then we called Brett at Tobacology.

Yes. He answered. He was laughing his ass off, but he couldn't hear a word he was saying, obviously. Yes.

Yeah. Brett is that type of guy. Yeah, well, that's Boots. I mean, Brett, is Brett a late guy?

Is he up? He goes, oh yeah, it's a way you should call him. Brett is realistically a dead hooker in the trunk guy. Yeah.

You know what I mean? Right. If we're, if you find yourself in the area of Virginia. Right.

With a dead hooker in the trunk. And you're in a position, I would call Brett and I'm sure that he would never speak about it again. And he'd be like, okay. No.

It's over. Nope. I don't want to talk about it. Because there may or may not be one already anyway.

Several, several. That's why he bought the farm. You know, he says he's always golfing. Yeah.

That's not what he's doing, he's actually committing murders. Oh, burying things. Yeah. Yeah.

He's like Dexter. Oh. Yeah. Keeps blood tablets.

Hmm. Can I tell him everything that happened that night, Phil? Uh-oh. You can do it whatever you want.

Uh-oh. So there was this, we called her the elf. It was a young lady there, shorter than my wife, so she had to be under five feet tall, head shaved on one side, a lot of tattoos, nose ring thing, but she was cute though, she was there with some dude who they didn't match at all. Okay, stop, tell the rest on the Patreon.

No, come on, tell the rest on the Patreon. She was hitting on boots. Oh. Like, hardcore hitting on boots, like, made the obvious offer of services.

Oh, really? What can I say? I'm a great-looking guy. For a threesome.

Was her boyfriend a cuck? Did he want to watch? I have no idea. It looked like a first date kind of thing.

Yeah, she didn't belong with him. Yeah. So she tried to throw out a... Because he was shorter than I was.

So she was like... You ever seen the new guy? Hey, I need two dicks tonight or something? But then she was...

Well, no, no. It wasn't a dick thing for her. It was just a third person, I think. Just a random third.

Yeah, because she hit on various women out on the dance floor. Ah. And at one point told my wife that she should be doing him if she's not. So it was a numbers game.

" But still. Wow. But still. Interesting.

Yes. See, this is why I don't go out with you guys on Saturday nights. I know better. It was a very upstanding bar hour in New Somerna Beach.

It wasn't like we were in some dive somewhere. It's the beach. It was only one girl. All the rest were drunk dancers.

Well, that Tracy with an eye, who was very fun, He was very fond of Tara. Yes. And she kept taking her shoes off and the bouncer would have to chase her to put her shoes back on. Put your shoes back on.

You have to have your shoes on. She'd scurry off. Yes. The blonde lady.

I remember. Yeah. She smeared herself on Tara's glasses. Hi, I'm Tracy with an eye and leaned in to kiss her and just gooed her.

Oh my goodness. Yeah. But she looked like Groover's girlfriend. Oh yeah?

Yeah. I never met her. It wasn't her. No, but just so you get an idea what she looked like.

Ah. And then there was a person. For a point of reference. But you were half in the bag, bro.

Like, how would you know? Well, I wasn't half in the bag all night. What time was that happening? That was...

Before we called. Wait a second. Yeah, that was way before we called. Wait a second.

Wait a second. What time did you go out that night? Well, they went out to the cigar bar. Answer the questions.

What time did you go out that night? I'm thinking eight-ish. You were out at eight. Yeah.

You didn't pre? No. You didn't drink at all during Saturday? No.

Like, usually your Saturday process is some yard work, some alcohol. Yeah, no, I didn't know, because we, well, okay, I had one beer, because we went, we took care of mom on Saturday, since we couldn't go Thursday. Watch the tapes, so you did drink. So we took mom to get a haircut, we took mom to the grocery store, and I had a beer with lunch.

What was the beer? It was a Blue Moon. Just one? Just one.

Well, that's why I was drinking Blue Moons the rest of the night, plus nobody had Landshark. Because for you to drunk dial everybody, at some point in the evening, you guys. That was about 9, 10 beers for the evening. So, he was probably only like 2 or 3 by the time we got there, maybe.

Yeah. But, you know, boots and check came. Then the beer started flowing a little bit more. Because that was our second stop, so I had two beers at the first place, and maybe it had one by the time you guys had showed up at the second place.

Interesting. I had a high bill. I don't know if everybody was putting all their stuff on me. I don't know what was going on.

You had a high bill. He opened the tab. I only drank Miller Lite. It was more than I spent here.

There's so much for me to say right now. Oh, okay. It was 150 bucks. That's not huge.

Oh, that's not too bad. In Miller Lite. Well, I think I had two beers on your tab. But Megan was buying my beers before that.

before that i know i know chat but but i'm saying like shots let's just nobody had shots nobody the shots it was just beers just beer so it was 150 that's what i'm talking about like you're talking about like 15 20 beers no a beer there is different than a pair how much is a beer at the it's like three bucks so you're gonna tell me that you guys between five people you burned through 50 beers that's what i'm saying that's i don't think we did oh there's no way i think i They only had like maybe 10, if that. So you got rolled. Yeah, I think they did. I don't know.

I didn't see anybody's tab. Unbelievable. It was probably that girl. I didn't spend any money at home.

It was great. Oh, good for you. She's probably like, you know what? He's not going to come home with me.

I'm just going to put all my shit on my tab. She didn't even know your name. Everything's on his tab. The guy over there.

There's no way she knew your name. That guy over there. He's my boyfriend. They're like, okay, hit the button.

Oh, God. So what do you got, COVID? What's going on? So, I woke up the next morning, about three o'clock in the morning, started throwing up stomach acid.

I had acid reflux. Okay. For about three hours. Interesting.

Burned my throat. What day? That was, we went on Saturday, that was Sunday. And Sunday, just laid around, did nothing.

I was just napping and vomiting. So you thought you had COVID? So, well, this cough showed up. And it's a very deep, chesty cough.

So I thought, well, this feels very COVID-ish. Very COVID-ish. So I took the test, but no, no COVID. No COVID.

No COVID. And the COVID's getting less as it progresses. Why would you test? I don't understand.

I had tests at home. They fell back. They're just laying around. Dude, when they were giving out the free tests, this guy got like 50 of them.

Every time they're free, I order them. I've got a stockpile of tests. You stockpile the tests. I don't understand you.

Well, I didn't want to come here if I had it. We're in Florida, bro. We don't test. I understand that, but I was thinking of everyone here.

I don't want to come here and spread it through the place. I mean, but you have something. Yeah, but it's not. So it's okay to spread something?

Yeah, just not COVID. Just not COVID. What if it's the flu? It's not the flu.

How do you know? Because there's no runny nose and there's no fever. It's just the cough. You don't have to have a runny nose and a fever to have the flu?

Do you have a fever with the flu? No. You don't? Yes.

No. Call Dr. Baldwin. You want me to call him right now?

Yeah, let's find out what Palmer's got. He's probably elbows deep into some fucking car battery that's up someone's anus or something right now. He enters the phone anyway. Hey, what's up?

Hey, what do you do guys? Hey, hold your hand right here for one second. I gotta talk to these guys. I'm not busy.

Yeah, right here. Stop the bleeding. Put pressure on this. My arm pressure up.

Oh boy. Your pad's in the thing. Why, does he remove the pad? Everybody else who sits in a chair removes the pad, even Dana.

Oh, I like the pad. It's comfy. Yes. So it's an exciting time in cigars.

Is it? It is. Why is it exciting? Well, don't you have somewhere to go soon?

Is he okay? I think he hit his head. I think he did, too. I think the elephant.

He's trying to move it along or something. He is. You guys remember talking about HIV, HPV, HIC? I don't know what you guys are talking about.

It was COVID. Like he's a fucking director of the show or something. Oh, I don't know. Now I'm not going to talk about it at all.

No, I wouldn't either. Yeah. I'm not even mentioning it. Oh, he's changing the camera.

Oh, it's on me. How is it just off me? I'm in on it, too. Yeah, we're in this together.

He doesn't know where to put the camera. Yeah. Oh, now it's on him. That's perfect.

I love that. I love the fact that you're dying. That's fantastic. It's hard to go to the button when you're coughing.

I gotta hold it. I gotta hold it. I gotta hold it. I gotta hold it.

Do you think maybe you just had too much to drink and you started just coughing stuff up? Uh, I don't know. I mean, I couldn't even talk for half the day because of all the acid I threw up out of my mouth. It was terrible.

Well, me and Chad had Taco Bell. We didn't even throw up. Yeah, I know. Thank God I didn't eat Taco Bell.

My wife wouldn't take me to Taco Bell. You don't ever get sick. I've never had like a hangover. You were patient zero for COVID though.

You brought it into the- I cannot deny or- Confirm or deny the statement. You came into Cigar House and blew up Greg. We don't know. You blew up Greg.

You don't fucking know. You know that you did it. It was definitely you. We don't know.

Yeah, we know. It was you. Now, you guys assume. No, we know.

Okay. No one tested? He almost killed Greg. He's still not- Are you- You're mad at me?

Is that his problem now where he is? I don't want him to die. Is that his problem now? He's sick down there?

No, that's not his problem. No, he's kidnapped. That's why it was all dark when you FaceTimed him. Oh, there was a kidnapper that answered the phone?

Yeah. So Greg is in Mexico. Oh, we'll get money from this guy. Hold on.

Why is he singing to me? Why is he singing? They have no money. So Greg is in Mexico right now.

He was supposed to be home today. Oh, was he? Yeah, he's having some issues. And I'm not at liberty to say what's going on.

Oh. So it's not my place to say. But it's quite apparent that he's not here and we all know where he went. I'll tell you, he's getting a boob job.

Oh, nice. It's Lawanda now. Oh, it's Lawanda? Yeah.

Made the change. That's why he's been growing his hair longer. Yeah, that's exactly it. It was all part of it, man.

Shaved the beard and now he's ready to go. Yeah. Long time coming. Yeah.

Somebody sick down there? Can't get back? No. He's not going to tell you.

I'm not going to say. I told him not to go. Will you tell me off the air? Of course, I'll tell you anything.

When do I not tell you something? I don't know, sometimes, I mean, you, oh, by the way, the guy who got the job at Roma Craft announced it on Facebook today. Did he? Yes.

John something, something? I don't remember. His name's John? Apparently, I was already his friend on Facebook.

Yeah. Well, he's been at Altidus for a long time. Oh. You know, he looks like an Altidus guy, looks a lot like Ryan.

Does he? From Altidus? Yeah. Hey, we could break that down a little more on Patreon, that's fine.

Sure. Nice. I almost asked him if he wanted to be on the show, but I thought maybe he's not ready. Oh, we should totally call him.

Oh. There you go. We can call him. Call his answer.

Are you his friend on Facebook? Is your phone probably already connected? I don't even know his name. His name's John.

Or Ryan. John. John something. John.

John. John. Well, John, if you're listening, you have to... I think it's John.

Answer your phone here in a second. I don't think it's John. Somebody messaged me. Message me.

I think Ben messaged me. Ben said it was already taken care of, but he didn't say who. Ben and his lovely wife, Sarah, who's now our research department. I love that.

R&D. I mean, and they provided some valuable insight about NFTs and what exactly you're buying. And what exactly you don't have to necessarily get if they don't want to give it to you. Allegedly.

Come up that way. Do you have the press release? There was no press release. There's no press release.

I didn't even know that they hired anybody. I don't remember who told me. Well, now I can't find him. Me neither.

Johnny, I don't know. Hello, people. Well, I guess we can't call him because we don't even know his name. But yeah, there's somebody new at Roma.

Yes. Damn it. I should have grabbed that when I saw it. So, he didn't call me that, though, and said, "Hey, I don't know.

" I thought it was you. So, I went to go buy, I went to go rent a laminate vinyl cleaner thing for the floor. Okay. Because, like, I got these grooves in my house, dirt gets stuck in it, drives me fucking nuts.

I can't stand it. That's why I say everybody knows shoes, you know, because I don't want more dirt. But you have dogs. Yeah, I mean, there's some things that you can't avoid.

What am I going to do? Fucking put sneakers on them when they go outside? We wipe their feet. Well, my wife does.

I just say I do. All the time? She says to. I just don't.

She doesn't. She doesn't do it. We have a lot of grass now in the backyard with the sprinklers and stuff. There's very little dirt.

Yeah. I'll pick up one foot and go, okay, you guys are good. Go. Oh, you passed the test.

Yeah. Nothing's stuck on this one. Once you add the other three. So, well, the other 12.

Oh, it was just the big ones. We don't wipe the little guy. - Oh, okay. - So it's eight.

- So I went to Home Depot, I was gonna rent this thing, 'cause there was only one place that had it in winter, it was in the Winter Park Home Depot, and of course I go there and they didn't have it. - Somebody checked it out? - No, it was still showing in stock, but it just doesn't exist. - Oh.

- But what they did have was this 13 foot Jack Skellington. - Oh, so you got that instead? - From Nightmare Before Christmas. - Oh.

- Yeah, so I uh... - Did you see the stackable skulls that glow red? No. Huge-ass thing.

Yeah? That's in the one by my house. That looked kind of neat. I've always wanted it like a big jack.

Yeah? Mm-hmm. But you put them on the roof. I did.

Which is another 15 feet in the air? Yeah. Did you strap them down? I use cinder blocks.

Nice. Does he have to have like a flashing red light on his head? Well, he's got LEDs that glow on his head. Oh, okay.

Just in case the drones come. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You don't want the drones running into them. Right, right.

So I'm really excited about that. I bought that and that's fun. What's next? You're not a lot of fun.

What's next? I'm listening. As far as like, what's the next piece to the puzzle for Halloween things? Yes.

Well, I think internally in inside the house is going to be floating candles nicely like a Harry Potter there. Well, no, like a Haunted Mansion, like, like at John Carney's birthday party. Yeah. Oh, I'm going to start calling him Johnny Meats, but the potato guy, Johnny Meats, Johnny Meats.

I like that. Because Carney is. Carney asada. Yeah, Spanish for meat.

Right. So, I'm going to start calling him Johnny Meats. Oh, that'll catch on. That's Johnny Meats, baby.

Johnny Meats. And he does this whole grill thing with the LFD. It's fantastic. Right.

So, I did that. What else did I? I didn't really do too much. Took it easy, man.

Had an easy weekend. Started with some football. That's going well. How are the kids football going?

Are they playing again? That's what I just said. The practice is going well. Jax, in his infinite wisdom, didn't bring his cleats to practice.

He showed up in flip flops I don't have my cleats I said well you're going barefoot So he practiced barefoot I'm not going back No And we're not at the level of You didn't bring a cleat you can't play It was not like middle school or high school level This is still Pop Warner Anybody step on his feet? He's even fine As soon as you get home you scrub those feet Because even though it was all covered in grass, he still had lots of dirt. Lots of dirt. Well, he's digging in.

Yeah. So that's pretty much all that I did. I didn't do anything fun and exciting. Oh.

Nothing for Labor Day or anything either? No, I just took it easy. Yeah, we didn't do anything either. Oh, we did barbecue hot dogs and hamburgers.

Nice. Yeah. That's good. All right.
