Episode 137.Shark Shark! We say Good bye to Danny....Powstanie Back in Stock

Episode Summary
Episode 137 of A Cigar Hustler's Podcast opens with the usual Mike & Mike banter — a drive-in Metallica "concert" that turned out to be a movie screening, COVID-era retail rules that make no sense (one-way aisles, no fitting rooms, hand sanitizer purchase limits), and a rant about Xbox warranty service after lightning strikes fried the household electronics. The guys also note an upcoming Cigar Coop media panel appearance alongside Cigar Dojo and Ben Lee of Stogie Review, plus plans to attend Weasel Fest.
The cigar news anchors the show. Danny Vasquez, who had served as sales leader for RoMa Craft Tobac since September 2017 — and who previously founded Boricua Cigar Company — announced his departure from the company, with no future plans publicized. The hosts share their affection for Danny, recount a prank in which they faked Matt Booth text messages to get him to confess a move to Room 101, and speculate about Tatuaje/Pete Johnson connections and his relocation to the Tampa area. They also launch a Patreon listener contest to guess Danny's next gig, with the winner taking a RoMa Craft prize pack.
On the retail side, the hosts announce that Powstanie is back in stock, while explaining a deliberate decision to tighten distribution to retailers who are genuinely committed to the brand rather than simply filling back orders. Behind-the-scenes, a color registration problem on a new secondary band for the Powstanie Wojtek ("War Bear") leads to a running joke about moving the band to the cigar's foot.
Industry news rounds things out: California's Governor Gavin Newsom signed a flavored tobacco ban into law (effective January 1, 2021), with a premium cigar carve-out defined as handmade, whole-leaf wrapper, no filter or tip, and a wholesale price of at least $12 — plus exemptions for loose leaf pipe tobacco and hookah shisha. TPE 2021 moved from January to May 12–14 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, putting it uncomfortably close to PCA and raising questions about whether brands can afford both. The episode also covers the viral U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Kimball video of crew firing on a shark during swim call, Universal Orlando hotel layoffs, Publix dropping one-way aisle arrows, and Listener of the Week Mike Goshen.

Welcome to episode 137 of the Cigar Hustler Podcast. This week, we say goodbye to Danny, Shark, Shark, was Danya's back, and if somebody can help me keep Mikey's attention for the show until it's over, I'd appreciate it. All right, guys, episode 137. Welcome to episode 137.
One, three, seven. Of the number one cigar podcast on Podbean. The Cigar Hustlers Podcast. There you go.
You know, what's kind of funny is, before you get into it, so when I drive my kids to work, or to school, kids are working, yeah, you gotta put them to work at an early age, I'm a big believer in that, so when I drive them to school, I let them watch YouTube videos, so, and normally it's like hype stuff, football stuff, or like, you know, something cool, because they don't have access to the regular YouTube on their iPads and stuff, they just have YouTube kids, but, you know, So if I can hear what they're listening to, I know that it's okay, right? So today was just my little guy, Justice, and he's like, "I want to listen to YouTube. " So I go to put a football thing on, he switches it out, then all of a sudden I hear you and me talking. " We're listed as not kid-friendly.
How do you even get to it? Yeah, because it's on my phone. Oh, always on your phone. So as I'm listening to it, you know, of course, the first segment he picks, it's, you know, know me saying a bunch of obscene curse words and he's like daddy you say all that i was like i say that all the time none of that's new you say it to mr palmer so i like him he my friend i got a kick out of that that's funny uh sometimes he's just gonna go into class and start you know cursing up a storm oh my daddy says you're what they call a Slapped it.
Why do the employees make me always go backwards? I don't know. All right, anything exciting happen over the weekend? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm a complete idiot. You want me to tell you that? Oh, is that a weekend thing? I just thought that was every day.
Yeah, no, it doesn't happen. It's not every day. I was gonna say, admitting your problems are first step to Mike. I made a big, I'm an idiot.
I'm an idiot. I don't know what else to say. What did you do? Did you call your wife the wrong name during sex?
No, so I get this email. No, that would never happen. So I get this email about Metallica coming to St. Augustine and Deltona, I was like get the fuck out of here, this is gonna be awesome, they're coming, where are they going to Deltona?
I'm like oh you gotta stay in your car and it's a drive-in thing and I'm like all right cool I'm in. So I didn't even hesitate, I instantly bought a ticket because you can fill people in your car. Yeah. So then I get an email notification later on, like, Friday, the day before it happens, and it's like, alright, so get ready for your drive-in theater metallic.
Like, it didn't say it. And I'm like, wait a second, they're not gonna be there. I think this might be like a movie or something. Did you go?
Yes, I did. How was it? Because I saw pictures from there and it didn't look that good. I'm not gonna lie.
It was pretty good. Really? How did they do the sound? It was pretty good.
The sound, that's where they fucked up. It was a sound through, like, FM radio. - Oh, so you played in your car or something? - Yeah, but I smoked like three cigars, I was extremely lucky.
- Did you sit outside or in your car? - I sat in my car, it was air, you know? - Pictures I saw, 'cause we had a group come up here on their way too, and hung out here, I saw Marlon's pictures, and they looked like they were in like camp chairs. - Yeah, that happened for a lot of people.
I mean, a couple things didn't make sense to me. " - They're just getting into it. - They can't hear you. " As the car goes by, he can't hear you.
Go! Go! Right. He can't hear a thing.
Yeah. Yeah, so I'm an idiot, but I still went and I still had a good time. And you could see it good and everything? Yeah, I could see it pretty well.
Like, I couldn't figure out how to get my lights off, so I had several people come over. Your headlights? Yeah, so, like, you turn them off, but, like, there's still, like, the halo light or whatever, like, you need to put your car, you need to turn your car off, you need to put your car on neutral, You need to put the e-brake on, keep the car in neutral. I'm like, I tried that.
That didn't work. But then I figured it out. Oh. So that was pretty epic.
Imagine the people in front of you are probably pretty pissed. Yeah, they're going like, they're going, "Cut it! " You're going, "Yeah, it's great! " Yeah, isn't this the best?
That's the best! Cutting my head off, too! How awesome! Oh, look at you.
Oh, man, I really wanted to get this done beforehand. Alright, I just got to wait. We can take a break? Nah, come on.
Alright, well, let's do this. This weekend was the- It's Cigar Hustler Podcast time, Mike. Hi, Mike. This weekend was the Rocky Mountain virtual.
Yeah. We didn't. We didn't make it. You know, I mean, this whole COVID shit is really...
Looks like a lot of people still went. At this point, it's very frustrating. Yes. You know, like, if the statement isn't just, "Hey, wear a mask, wash your hands," I feel like that works.
Like, okay, that will slow the spread, right? Yeah. Okay, so, if I fly to a different state... Right.
You know, some of them you still have to quarantine for 14 days. However, if you're an essential worker, you don't have to quarantine. What, how does that work? Like, that makes no sense.
Yeah. Um, because the line for essential workers, like a variable. I mean, there's not like a straight line. Right.
Oh, I'm here for work. Oh, okay. Oh, you're right. Then you must be clean.
Breathe on everyone. Right. Please, please cough away. Um, or like, if you want to go to try on clothes, you can't try on clothes.
Right. Yeah. My wife bought some new clothes for work and she brought home like, you know, and some of them didn't fit. Someone did fit.
I go, wouldn't it be so much easier to just try them on there? She's never done that anyway. " Right, so you're not allowed, but since they don't fit, you can go right ahead and return them. Right.
Oh yeah, there was no question, taking them back. So like that, like... The girl was very sympathetic. I don't get it.
I get stuff home and it doesn't fit anything. So, I mean, do they have to wash those now? Yeah, how's that, you know, what's protocol? I'm thinking they just hang them on hangers and put them right back out.
That's what I'm saying, you know they're going to. They quarantine them for 24 hours? The jeans? I mean, are they going to hazmat?
Like that doesn't make any sense. It doesn't make any sense. Brittany, my wife, went to go get little hand sanitizer things, so that's a struggle for boys, apparently, because... To get it?
No, because all the ones that are this big, that are little, that you can put on backpacks, are pink and have glitter. Oh, yeah, I have one of my cards, pink. My kids don't want that. So, Brittany found superhero ones.
Oh! Amazing, amazing. So, she picks up two of them. " I mean, my money's on a little guy, I'm just saying, I mean, as I'm leaving today, it's like, he gives me a hug, and then a punch, and he runs away.
So, yeah, he's down. It's funny. It's just like, I just don't get it, like, it just doesn't make sense. No, some of the rules don't, no, no.
We have a story later, we just touched on right now, 'cause it's kind of printed, but Publix is taking up the arrows, you no longer have to. Yeah, because we, we're not fucking listening to you, I'm not going down the, you know, if I, If my can of soup is in the do not enter aisle going this way, I'm fucking getting it. One lady on the radio said she was at a store and somebody noticed that the arrow was the opposite way, so they turned the cart around and backed into the aisle. I love it.
Oh, you're going the wrong way. Oh, excuse me. No, I'm leaving the aisle. I'm not coming in.
And don't get me wrong. It's one thing if you're not wearing a mask, if you got like this, you know, if you're one of those crazy guys that just, I'm not doing any of it. Yeah, but like, I'm just, I'm just trying to be respectful, right? Right, yeah.
Like, I think that that is a fair thing to do. It's not, you know, the world isn't trying to identify my, the top part of my face or whatever. Well, no, they say actual facial recognition does not work when you wear the mask. Yeah, so, you know.
So, it's a bonus. So, so here we are. Now they can't find me. So, here we are, just where, you know, like, I feel like all this shit needs to be, how is it, how is it okay that, I mean, I have gone to restaurants to pick up food.
Right. And the bar is fucking packed. It's packed. I mean, not even...
There's no social distancing. No social distancing. Arm to arm. It's fucking nut to butt.
There's no joke. Oh, that's the asses and elbows. You know, it's... Like, nut to butt.
But meanwhile, back at the fucking Cigar Hustlers' shop... Can't serve alcohol. No, no, no. You can't have beer here.
That's the devil music. I mean, what is going on? No curly fries on the bar. What are you doing?
So I feel like some of this stuff, you know, it just needs to go away. I feel like Home Depot did a good job of adjusting a couple things. Like before they had like the line and like the whole thing. Right, you had to get in.
I feel like somebody in the corporate office said, what the fuck are we doing? Just let them in. They have masks. So now I can go back in the exit like I used to, you know?
Somewhere, Walmart is still only one way in, one way out. One way in. Like what? What does it make a difference?
How does it matter? If I pass somebody coming out, they might give it to me. Right. If we're all wearing masks, what's the issue?
Right. Still, everybody doesn't though. Even when they say you can't get in. Target's the only place I've seen turn people away.
Because you don't want the conflict. Well, right. Because, I mean, I've seen some videos of, like, people that... Oh, yeah, they go...
They're not, they're, you know, some, the ones that I have seen, maybe not everybody that does this, but the ones that I have seen, of course, are the people that definitely aren't right. Well, those are the ones... And, you know, and they're going... Make it on the social media.
And they're going nuts. So who wants to have that interaction? What does this all have to do with the Rocky Mountain thing? I have no idea.
Oh, just trying to think. Trying to follow you there, Michael. Well, it was because you said virtual, and it made me think of COVID. Oh, gotcha, gotcha.
And then I'm like, what? Did you watch any of it? I didn't watch any of it. No, I don't.
No, I mean, we weren't in it, so. Yeah, what's the point? Why watch it? But, this Thursday, you'll be on Cigar Coop.
I will be. On a media panel. On a media panel. Yes.
You gotta love Coop. A media panel with Cigar Dojo and Ben Lee from Stogie Review. I had to look up and see the name of Ben's show. I know Ben, but I know the name of his show.
Eric Gutter from his show. I'm not saying his name because he didn't put us on his show. Oh. Oh, can you bring that up?
Absolutely. Hey, did they have a media panel and they didn't include it? Well, didn't they interview people like they always do? That's usually what they do.
I didn't, I mean, it was three or four parts because my phone kept going off every time they put up a new one. I'll bring it up. You know, people playing shuffleboard and playing in the pool at somebody's house. I'll bring, I mean, you know, I mean, how many of those people had a dinosaur in the background?
Exactly. None. And here we are just not being, you know, getting the respect that we deserve. We're at least entertaining, if not respectful.
I know. It's crazy. Are we doing anything? I don't think we are.
I don't think we are. Uh, just because of how this week is going to play out, I don't... Oh, that's right. Ooh, you might be doing it from the car.
No, I'll be home in time, but I'm going to Weasel Fest, by the way. Oh, are you? It's happening. So I talked to Tommy Farrell from Nickel City Cigars.
Yes, he put up a post to us all the other day. " All right, well. Oh, because John D. " No, that's not gonna happen.
The people are just going to show up. Good luck. Hello. Yeah.
Weasel, weasel. If you want people to respond, John, I would highly advise you to have Lightweight Heavy do a video post and put it on Weasel Team 6 because then you'll get responses. Well, that's where he put the post. It's not the same.
No. People like seeing the magic of Sean Coleman. They don't. Well, he's a very intimidating man, so people listen.
Yes, and he's a bike rider. He's an aggressive bike rider. He is. Apparently cleaned out the garage.
Did you see my comment? Did you see mine? I think I did. I was half in the back.
Skip liked it. Yeah. I'm like, wait a second. Every job needs a talented leader, Michael.
Everybody needs a leader. I saw that. All right. Last week's show, you made a small attempt at some type of revenge or something.
Oh, you play it down. I noticed it right away. No, you didn't. If you listen to the show, you can hear me say, you set this up.
Yeah. I know. You were trying to vet me for it, but I could see the look of concern on your face. Anyway.
I know you well. You start to sweat. I do sweat. Yeah.
Nick has been on me all week about that label thing that he, you know, he wanted the label to reseal the box. Yes. " He's been trolling you. " So, I have his labels.
Oh. I told him I would have them today. So here are your labels, Nick. If you'd like, I'll mail them to you or seal a box if you would like to verify the labels, Michael.
That's nice. Yes, I will send those right out to you, Nicholas, and make you happy. You know, for a minute there, Roma had some really badass labels. Oh, did they?
Yeah. I don't know what happened to that. Beggars can't be choosers. I asked for labels, I got labels, so.
There you go. So you're gonna troll them? I will send them. I might just get one jingy and send it to them too.
Where are you gonna get it from? I have my... I've been offered two. Oh yeah?
You're gonna reach out to the best retailer in the world? Well, he did offer me one. Honest Abe? Oh.
Smoking? But I'm sure I could get them from the best retailer in Central Florida. All right, we'd also like to announce that Powstanie is back in stock. Hey!
If you have not already seen all the pictures in the post, your local retailers will be receiving them if you don't buy them from us directly. It's been a happy, happy week. Yes, it's been very busy here. I'm not going to lie though, your local retailer might not be receiving them.
Well, yeah, there has been a change. We're looking to reduce a little bit. It's depending upon how serious the retailers are. " It's kind of tough, man.
" Well, normally, you know, I mean, I want to, you know, we've had in the past, you know, especially with the whole COVID thing, we had some issues with availability of product, so even with growth of production, I still feel that it's appropriate that we bring down those accounts, you know, reduce the number and keep it to a point of people that are truly committed and believe in us, and as we believe in them, I think that that's the right move. " So, it's not easy. I'm just going to tell you it's not easy. And it's a good problem to have.
So, I appreciate the love, you know? Right? Yeah. So everybody has not been shipped yet, though?
No, no, I'm slowly working on it. Right, yeah. I'm not, you know... Super busy.
It isn't like a super busy type of scenario, as much as it is that I want to be able to have a full conversation with the retailer and explain to them where my mindset is, instead of just filling back orders. Gotcha. I mean, because we could... Are we going to record any of these phone calls for the Patreon?
We could legit just turn it back on and just send the product we have them back on and we'll be out. I have to get something out of the break, I just forgot to do. Oh good. That's okay, it'll be in the second half.
Is the audio on for the camera? Yes. Well, that's good. That's good, I'm proud of you.
You couldn't tell last week. I could. You could because you knew, but nobody complained that the sound was off. I mean, it was literally off.
They were caught in awe with the video. Oh, is that what it was? Wow, that's amazing. The lighting.
I did ask we were going to have candles this week, make it a little more romantic since it's dimly lit. I love it. Oh. Little candles?
You guys want candles? Scented? Ooh. Yankee?
Yankee candles. I don't understand why Yankee Candle never made the gasoline candle. I mean, everybody, you know, a man's man really loves the gasoline smell. Like, Target carries one called Havana Nights, which is supposedly tobacco and cedar.
It smells like cedar. It doesn't smell like tobacco. It's a wood. Wood.
It smells like wood. I want gas. You want a gasoline? I want the '93.
I thought there is a gasoline. I want the 101 octane or something. Well, maybe the problem is once you light it, it just goes out real quick. Why does it smell like gas in here?
Because we are men. I like the smell of gas. You know, it would be good when it smells like propane. Ooh, that's kind of scary.
The scent of propane is scary. Normally it has no scent. It has an added scent, so we're not all dead. Right.
So if you can smell that, like I have, you know, especially being in the industry that we're in, I mean, I have some concerns. Like, everybody just put the cigars down, walk away, open some doors or something. They say that even if you like leave the stove on, it's very hard to blow up your house. I don't know, do you see Fight Club?
I gotta believe that to be true. It's moving. Nope, no. It really happened.
I don't think it did. Okay, maybe it didn't. Well, that were several different cans. I mean, that's a little different than the average stove.
It's true. Because I'll tell you, one time, when Alex came to visit us, first time at the house we're in, I came home as he was making his breakfast, and he didn't know we had a gas stove. Oh. So, he turned it on, he's like, "Is something wrong?
" Here, try it with the slider. He goes, "I've turned all of them on. " This is so ridiculous. I don't know what's going on here.
So, yeah, so we had to turn everything off, open some windows. " The day the Palmers died. Well, he was the only one home. Oh.
Well, the day he lost his son. That would've been terrible. That would've been terrible. Better off, I'm dead.
Yeah, exactly. Right. Let's see, we're at 19 minutes. Let's go.
What else you got? Let's get this thing rolling here. What did you do? You got nothing to say to me, other than the fact that you got labels.
Nothing exciting happened this weekend. We didn't do anything, 'cause it rained. It rained all weekend. Rain, rain.
Oh! It rained. We were supposed to go out and help the Atwells pack up their campsite, but it rained. Oh, I'll tell you what I did, though.
Last night I started watching Cobra Kai on Netflix. Oh, how is it? Oh, it's great. Really?
It's great. You totally caught me off guard with that. Oh, no, it is. I thought that you would say that.
Well, first, what's his name? Lorenzo, whoever plays Lorenzo, he still can't act. No? He still can't act.
That was the Karate Kid? Yeah, except now he's rich and famous and Johnny is almost homeless. Oh, poor Johnny. Because he got beat.
Right. Right. But he's resurrecting the Cobra Kai. He's bringing it back.
Sweep the leg. He's teaching it like it was taught to him, you know, no surrender, you hit first, blah, blah, blah, but his students are kids that have been picked on and beat up at school. Ah, poor revenge. So it's almost that, what was the other kid's name?
The rolls have been flipped? Yeah. Yeah, I mean, he's still a derelict loser. Well, did you ever see the YouTube video back in the day where they explained Johnny was trying to self-medicate with marijuana and just like take it easy and then, you know, here comes the karate kid and fucking.
Right, picks on him and gets him beat up by an old man. He takes his girlfriend. He takes his girlfriend. Right.
Yeah. That's the way this thing is shot. Oh, okay. That's cool.
I mean, Johnny's the good guy. That's awesome. It is. It's all about perspective.
It is. You know? That's why it's so good, because they just flipped the entire thing. Yeah.
Just like Wicked with the Oz thing. Right? Right. The witches, they were, you know.
Eh, they're okay. They were just doing what they could. Misunderstood. It's just a house.
Accidents happen. All right. I got something for you. I forgot to tell you.
Okay, well, no, no, go ahead. Good, 'cause then we can start at the break. We can wrap that in, then we can get into the news. So, I've had two really bad lightning strikes right next to my house.
Oh, did you get the thing back yet? Yeah, so I've lost a lot of electronic equipment, like TVs, Xbox. Any of that covered under your home warranty? Insurance?
Yeah. It's like right at the line. It's a dollar value. Yeah.
Is that what it is? A deductible thing. I lost my Ratchio thing, which is like my automated sprinkler system. Uh-oh.
That can't be good. The light. Where did the light go? The light go.
Where did the light go? And now you'll see a darker episode. The next few minutes will be dark. Yeah, okay, finish your story, then we'll go break, we'll see why that light went on.
So, it's been hell, man. So like, I finally, you know, I've had a back and forth with the sprinkler system and they finally sent in. Oh, the sprinkler system burned up. Yeah, so I've had grass dying.
Oh. Because we had like a good two week span of no. Yeah, it didn't rain for a while. " And I didn't even know this thing was broken, so I figured it out.
I used to crash dying, Michael. Yeah. I have no idea. The watering's set to come on every night.
I can tell you though, so Ratchio was really good to work with, and they tried sending me the plug first, that didn't work, then they sent me the brand new upgraded one, which was really nice, but I can tell you that Microsoft Xbox, the worst company on the planet to deal with forever when it comes to this warranty shit. Right. I sent it in, they sent me back another one that didn't work, and they stole my video game out of it. So they didn't fix it, they sent you a new one?
" You know what, we had that problem once when we sent Connors in years ago, the hard drive didn't come back. Yeah, done, it's toast. But I had, my Call of Duty game was in it, there was no longer power for it. Right, we actually got somebody else's hard drive, so it had some other kids' games and stuff on it.
And I had a really good, you know, on my hard drive, you can save, like, videos and stuff. I had, like, a good 90-meter shot of me with a crossbow. Oh, saving videos from the game. Yeah, I shot this guy, and it was epic.
It was an epic kill. Warzone. Apparently, they've been advertising Warzone is free right now. Yeah, so Warzone is, like, a portion of it.
They're going for, like, Fortnite customers and stuff. Oh, I got you. So. Got you.
But, yeah, Microsoft is. And like, I don't understand why it takes an entire day to download an upgrade for Microsoft. Like, oh, new software. It's 10 gigs.
That'll be 72 hours. Isn't that the speed at your house? No. The speed at my house is relatively fast.
So it's just like... Is it like here fast? So I guess my point is if... No, it's probably like your house fast.
Oh, okay. If Bill Gates is really trying to microchip you with the vaccine, you'd think that he'd be able to fucking handle the download situation on the Xbox, okay? Well, that's probably why. All the downloads are going to the chips.
Ah, yes. That's it. Now it all makes sense. Elon Musk is doing something with chips, too, in people's heads.
Oh, yeah. He's looking to fix people, to circumvent nerves that are broken, to make people, like, walk again. Oh. Yeah.
Yeah, what a scumbag, right? I mean, ridiculous. I'm trying to make people better, you know. Alright, the light thing's bothering.
Okay, we're going to take a break, we're going to fix the light, we're going to print something, and we're always full. See, this is the reason why I'm going to speed this shit up and hit the button and buy brand new lights. Right here. And that's a relatively new light.
Yeah, we just got it like last week. Well, a month ago. Okay, like last month. Oh.
How long did we complete my computer for? We got a new computer. Listen, we can't count, we can't count on the Romacraft well to get us lights as well, okay? And a new camera.
Skip only listens to the audio anyway. We got to earn this shit ourselves, god damn it. Skip, I don't care what it looks like, I don't watch the videos. He subscribed.
Oh, did he? Yeah. To the video? You told me about that.

The light has been fixed. The light has been fixed. Will it last the entire time? We'll have to find out to see, but...
Only time will tell. Our lead news story, which, I don't know who put this press release out, but you can decide after I read it, but I got this from Coop's page. Danny Vasquez, who serves as the sales leader for Roma Craft Tobac, has announced he is leaving the company. His last day of the company is scheduled for August 20th, which was this past week.
Mr. Vasquez joined Roma Craft Tobac in September 2017. Prior to joining Roma Craft Tobac, Vasquez was the owner and founder of Barocca Cigar Company, before folding the company. Boricua?
Boricua? Mm-hmm. Boricua. Boricua.
I like Boricoa. Boricua. Boricua. Folded the company in 2017.
Vasquez posted the following statement on his social media. I feel like you need a 10-gallon hat sometimes. And a pickup truck. As you'll hear on this week's Sultans of Smoke podcast.
Got me to Borocca. This Friday will be my last day at Romacraft Tobac. I've had the honor and privilege of meeting so many of you across the country and have become friends with some amazing people. This post doesn't do you justice.
To the Roma family, thank you for all the great experiences, the things I have learned, and for the things I have done for me and my family over the years. Yes. The things I have learned and for the things, oh, you've done, sorry, for me and my family over the years. I like to think I had a small part in getting Roma to where it is today.
Mm-hmm. The responses I've gotten from accounts and friends is nothing short of humbling and heartwarming. Thank you for all. At press time, Vasquez has not announced his future plans.
He has not. Now, we have known about this for a little while. Yes. And I have been harassing Danny for a while about where he's going.
I have been harassing him, especially even harping on the whole Matt Booth relationship that he has. Yes, they have quite the bromance. Yes. However, that is kind of his angle.
Matt Booth does. He has quite the bromance with many people, I feel. Yes. I commented on one of his photos, oh, what a very attractive man.
I got back and, oh my. But now he did go, now he did say on our podcast previously that, you know, he has a special, he holds a special place in his heart for, one said, Danny Vasquez. Vasquez. Oh, that's right, that's right.
So, um, so I, you know, I had to take that opportunity to really, really kind of hammer it home for Danny. I'm like, oh, you're going to Room 101, you're so full of shit, don't fucking lie to me. And he's like, no, I swear, I swear. So I call up one said Mike Palmer, and I said, "Hey, listen, I'm gonna send you some random texts, and I need you to say yes, he's coming to join me to work," and all these other things, and then I changed Mike Palmer's name in my phone to Matt Booth, so you know, I had like a good back and forth, said, "Hey, I heard Danny's going to work with you," and he's like, "Yeah, don't, you know, don't tell anybody," and so then I take that.
I tried to answer it like Matt would answer it. Yeah, yeah, and it looked good. He's my man. Yeah, it looked really, really good, so I took the screenshot, and I said to Danny, I'm like, you're full of shit, see, look, here's the proof, and he's like, no, man, you know, I didn't do that, and he's like, he's just messing with you.
Oh, so he, but he had no idea it was not Matt. No, no, he was not, you know. People just don't understand how phones work. Yeah, so it was, uh, it was pretty epic, I really was really trying to get him to cave, I mean, he could go with Tatuaje too.
I mean, because apparently it's salt and smoke. Yeah, there's something going on with Pete Johnson. Mm-hmm. I don't know, I'm not familiar with that relationship.
I just think that it is highly unlikely that he gets out of the industry. Yeah. You know? Well, I spent all this time, and then, I mean, he was an IT guy for a while, too, so, I mean, he does have that to fall back on, but.
But he's, and he's coming to Florida. Yeah, Tampa area. Yeah, so I asked him, you know. Well, they must be like, oh, here, actually, because they were posting pictures over the weekend of the drive.
I asked him if he's excited to be in Florida. Maybe he's going to run with the new CIs over there in Tampa. He's a Tampa Bay fan, so, you know, the Bucs games, when we can eventually go to them, should be nice. Well, maybe you two can go together.
That'd be romantic. Wouldn't that be nice? Yeah. Maybe I can get Craft 2021.
Maybe you can put in a fucking good word for me. I think our odds are a little better of getting it. I don't know why. But, hey, I mean, we wish Danny the best.
Yes, but he's not going to go, we're not wishing the best quietly, though. So, we're doing a little contest with our patrons. Oh, we are! Yes, they were asked to come up with...
With the patrons of the Patreon, or just the... Our patrons of the Patreon. Okay, so it's a Patreon contest. Yes, yes, I'm not gonna say whose comment was whose, but they were all asked to come up with an option or something they thought Danny would be doing.
Oh, man, you're gonna get me in so much trouble. I've seen some of these, you're gonna get me in so much... Hey, Danny, I just want you to know, full disclaimer, I had nothing to do with this. And these aren't for me either.
Okay, I love you, I can't stop Mike Palmer from saying these things about you. I'm not saying them, the patrons are saying them. And you know, the fact of the matter is, I had nothing to do with it, and I love you. I'm not going to read them on the air, because some of them are quite long, but what I'm going to do, what I told the guys I would do, I'll make an Instagram poll.
Yeah, or you can do a Facebook on our Facebook, a Cigar Houses podcast page. We get more action on the Instagram. Okay, okay. Anyway.
Whatever you want. People vote. It's your show. Either way.
People will vote which one that they feel was the most accurate. Yeah. And then the winner, whoever. Whoever wins it.
Whoever picked it wins, but. Whoever picked. Oh, so whoever created it. Whoever created it.
There you go. There you go. Whoever created it will win a little Roma prize pack. I will read just a few of them, maybe.
Not the horrible ones. No, no, no, no. Okay. No, no.
No, no, no, no, no. Be nice to Danny. Let's see. He'll tour the Midwest USA with a fish cover band as a cowbell player.
Oh, cowbell. Cowbell. I could see that. I could see him rocking the cowbell.
He's going to be the new Tiger Wrangler for Karole Bashkin. Ooh, he's going to be in Tampa. I mean, I'm sure that option's up. However, she doesn't pay anybody.
He is the new talent scout for the Florida Thunder Mail Review Strip Club. Ooh. It works part-time for Jeff Borchewitz at the Davids. Oh, there it is.
There it is. The rest of them are quite lengthy. How's he gonna find the time to do both? Well, it's one or the other.
He's not doing all of these. Yeah, no, but the Thunderstrip guy and then part-time. Well, talent scout, so maybe weekends, maybe there's not a lot of scouting. Or maybe weekends are when you scout.
I don't know how that actually works. Yeah, how's that play out? I don't know exactly. Listen, there's only twice a month that you have to do that.
Oh, here's one of them. Palmer chimes in. Look, he's got plenty of time. I know how it works.
I know how it works. Here's one with Pete Johnson. Danny's moving to Florida to work with Pete Johnson. Since they bonded when Pete was on the Sultans of Smoke, they will collaborate on a new blend taking the secret recipes that Danny stole from Karole Crafts with his amazing photographic memory, or compliment, amazing photographic memory, the new endeavor will be known as the Vajo, Vasquez Johnson, and will reign supreme over the cigar industry.
Vajo Craft? No, no, just Vajo. Just the Vajo. Just Vajo.
Vajo, Vasquez Johnson. Yeah, I got it. It says either that, or, no, I gotta say that one. Yeah, leave that one alone.
Some of you guys are just downright mean. Mean people. Let's see. Oh, he left the cigar industry completely to move to Germany and become a new hand and foot model.
Oh! Apparently he has very nice hands and feet. Lovely hands. So that'll be fun.
So everybody gets to vote. I'll abbreviate some of the longer ones. And I even asked them to be nice too. Be nice.
Be nice. You had one job. One job to be nice. Be nice to Danny.
All right. Danny, we wish you the best, brother. Yes. Yes, or whatever you end up doing.
Come say hello. You're not that far away now. Yeah, come make a trip or something. You can come on the show.
You know? Yeah. We'll be nice. We will be nice.
Yeah. He usually comes on our January show when we do the reviews. He'd like to make that an annual thing when we read the list. That was cool.
Yeah, we did that. Because he had the clarification. The pronunciations, yes. You know, with all of his experience at the Barroca factory, Barroca, Barrocoa.
It's like a ranch somewhere near Yellowstone. Barrocoa. Who's having a property this season? Barrocoas are coming after our property, Mr.
Dalton. Those damn Barrocoas. See, flavored tobacco products are about to get a lot harder to come by in California. As of this past Friday, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law.
His signature came after the Senate unanimously. Unanimously, they amended the version of the bill returned by the Assembly voting. Who cares who they voted? The bill prohibits a tobacco retailer or any of the tobacco retailer's agents or employees.
Can't we just make California like their own country? From selling, offering for sale, or possessing with the intent to sell or offer to sell. That covered everything. A flavored tobacco product or a tobacco product flavored.
Nothing. North of the chiclets. Subjecting them to a fine of $250 for each violation. $250,000.
It also allows local governments to impose greater restrictions on the access to tobacco products than the bill imposed. Mmm, love that. Considering the state's all burning, it's really not that an issue at this point. Sorry.
Oh, we'll see, it also does not make the possession or use of flavored tobacco products illegal. There are exceptions to the ban, however, including one of the premium cigars, though it is not terribly flavored or likely to mean that many premium cigars make the cut. In the bill, the state defines a premium cigar as, "Any cigar that is handmade, it is not mass-produced by use of mechanization, has a wrapper that is made entirely, entirely, entirely from a whole tobacco leaf and has a wholesale price of no less than $12. " You think Arnold, when he was there, he would have protected cigars or something?
He probably never thought this was ever going to come. It's been a while since he's been in charge. Also gaining an exemption is loose leaf tobacco, a win for pipe smokers and those who like to roll their own cigarettes, but the biggest exemption goes to hookah lounges as the ban does not apply to the sale of flavored shisha tobacco products by a hookah, tobacco retailer. Which is perfectly acceptable.
Nothing wrong with that. What exactly is banned? Premium cigars are good. Just flavored cigars.
Just swisher sweets and stuff like that. Stuff that have the tips on them. Oh. Because if it's a premium cigar that's flavored, it's okay.
But the weed's fine. Hookah's okay. Well, weed's fine. Weed's always fine.
I don't understand. So what if I want to put my weed in the flavored stuff? I mean, it's California. Why would you want to flavor your weed?
I thought that's what they did. Isn't that a thing? Isn't that a thing? I don't think they flavor the weed.
I think those people like the weed flavor. No. Nope. No?
No. You're wrong. A blunt? You put the wheat in?
Yes. So it's like a fake cigarette thing? Yeah, you roll it. So you buy those and they get a little hole in the middle or something?
I feel like I'm being interrogated here. No. Like, I don't know what that is. I don't know what that stuff is.
I've never heard of it before. The band goes into effect on January 1st. Yeah, so blunt wraps are flavored. Are they?
Yeah. I didn't know. Yeah, you can get, like, cognac. You can get, like, grape.
You can get all kinds of green apples. Oh, that's why you don't sell well to that certain crowd here. Yeah. Well, let's see.
The band goes into effect on January 1st, 2021, and California joins Massachusetts as the two states having flavored tobacco bags. But I don't think those guys really give a shit anymore because they just vape them. You know, like the battery e-cig weed is a bigger deal now. Uh, oh, smokey verse.
Boom, light gone. Light gone again. You know what that means. It's time for an upgrade.
It's happening. Should we turn the overhead light on? No, we're just, we're rolling with this. We're just going to live this.
You're very well lit. Me, I'm in the dark over here. You're going to live this with the left shadow, the tough look on your face. Oh yeah, only, oh, that's right.
You should, you should look at me the whole time because. Yeah, because the sharpness is. Sharpness on the, because. Here, it's just very evil looking.
It is. Very ominous. Ominous. Baroque.
We could take a break every 17 minutes. Every 17 minutes. Set the light. Turn it off.
Turn it on. Turn it back on. Turn it off, turn it off. Well, I've been eyeballing two different sets of lights, so this just confirms me speeding that up.
All right, let's see, the TPE-21 has moved to May. Yes! May 12th to the 14th, 2021, from its original scheduled dates of January 25th to the 27th. From their site, the event is described as the ultimate buying and selling show.
TPE-21 show is the most engaging buying show of the year. This is held in May, at the, in, at, at the, at the, at the last, oh, Vegas Convention Center, I should probably read all that. It looks like TPE's going for the PCA jugular, if you ask me. Oh, it's very close.
Yeah. Hmm. Oh, yeah. It's going to be interesting.
Almost back to back. What am I, so what, you know, like, what do I do? Do I represent my brands at both? It's a lot of money at the same time.
Right. Hey, I'm going to fly out and then fly out. You know. Let's see, May 12th to the 14th.
Is it in June? Have they given the dates? I think they already gave the dates, too. Probably.
So you have like two weeks. Yeah. That doesn't make any sense. You might as well stay.
Stay! Yeah. Eat $150 cheeseburgers every fucking day. In your $400 a night suite.
Yeah, it's perfect. It makes total sense. Let's see. The TPE will help you open new business accounts across all retail sectors.
All retail sectors. All. Including independent retailers, premium tobacconists, importers, distributors, the hard-to-reach C-stores, Coffee Stores, Vape Shops, Head Shops, Discount Tobacco Outlets, Catalogues, Beer, Wine, and Liquor Stores, and much, much more! Just when he thought it couldn't get any harder for PCA.
That's alright. Exhibiting the TPE gives you, well they still only have the two, the two, oh, COVID. COVID. Coronavirus!
Coronavirus. They still only have the two guys. There's been no more stories of those, they've hired. There's just two of them?
Just the two guys. One guy gets a coffee, one guy answers the phone. TB gives you the chance. Is it in that order?
I guess it depends on how much the phone rings. Does the guy call the other guy and has him bring the coffee? I would hope they're in the same room, keep all the lights off every way out to save money. TPE gives you the chance to get your products in front of eager buyers in the tobacco, vape alternative, and convenience markets.
A perfect way to get new customers, leads, and POs in your hand. TPE is the one-stop trade show with hundreds of exhibitors offering thousands of products. You will spend less money on your products purchases and have access to more top brands all in one place. Stay ahead of your competition by exploring new products and potential profit channels and take advantage of exclusive TPE show details.
This feels like a press release but it came from Coop. Oh, okay. Here's the one thing about the PCA not having PCA this year, I think that a lot of brand owners and manufacturers still had a solid June, July. They released their products.
They still took orders. Right. We don't have to go. And they didn't have to spend $50 to $100 to $100.
So, like, PCA's got to do some revamping, some serious revamping. If not, I feel like this could be it. This might go away. This could be it.
I didn't even think about how close the dates were. Oh, yeah. That was every bit of intentional. Oh, sure it is.
They're looking to replace. So if you go first, you're not last. If you're not first, you're last. You know what to say.
That's right. All right, Michael. The Coast Guard opened fire on sharks. I saw that video.
Did you see that? Yeah. Coast Guard watch opens fire on sharks to protect the crew in the water. What?
Okay. I have so many questions. Go ahead. Okay.
S. Coast Guard members had a close encounter with a shark during a dip in the ocean earlier this week. Do you have a question? Yeah.
So, like, it looked like a full boat of people. Yes. There was no social distancing? No, none on the boat, because they've all been quarantined before they got on the boat.
So they don't dock anywhere. So, I mean, everybody's quarantined on a boat together. So these people have been on this boat this whole time? Yes.
Holy shit. For like six months? Well, military bases are quarantined in themselves. So, like my son that's on an army base, he can't leave.
So these people are like military? Coast Guard's military. There's Coast Guard bases. So they were, but the Coast Guard, the people that were swimming and having a good time.
Yes. They're Coast Guard people? Yes. Ah.
Yes. They offer downtime where they're like, okay, swim time, everybody on B-shift gets to go swimming. Yeah, they had like this nice little unicorn inflating thing. It was nice.
Yeah, somebody brought that out, yeah. Did you see that? But I mean, the way they sleep on the, because those boats aren't like, you know, aircraft carrier-sized boats. Right.
They're stacked in there like sardines anyway. It's miserable. I mean, it's, it's one bunk on top of the next bunk on top of the next. You want to be the top guy, because he gets all the head space.
So they went for a swim, and there was a big shark. Big shark. And they started lighting them up. S.
" The shark felt the same way until-- Then the group spotted a shark. They estimated it was between six to eight feet long. Until they started eating lead. About 30 feet away, swimming directly toward them, according to the Coast Guard, who shared a video of the incident on Facebook.
Everyone was having a great day. Everyone was smiling and having fun. It was perfect. And then the bridge personnel reported, shark, shark, over the radio.
Let's see. After bridge personnel reported the shark. I mean, I wish someone was there to play the music. Wait, wait, wait, wait.
After bridge personnel reported the shark sighting, maritime enforcement specialist, first class Samuel Cintron, locked in on the shark. Locked in? No, no, he wasn't one like that. Oh, was it?
Yeah, it was one of those. Oh, one of those, dead guns. Yeah, it was a gun that was on the boat. See, he let off a few rounds on top of where the shark was swimming.
No, doo-doo-doo. A few? Go look at the video. It wasn't a few.
" Well, they didn't hit him at first. Oh. They were warning shots. Oh.
Scare him away. Right. All the crew members of the water swam to get out of the ocean. Quick run.
Some made their way to the small boat that was in the water with the crew, while others went for a ladder on the fantail. Some swam toward an open stern notch at the ship's stern. Citron continued to fire bursts of the shark. Yeah.
Each burst briefly took the shark off his path, but it kept turning back. I'm hungry, he says. Look at these people. Hey, people.
S. Coast Guard said. After reviewing the video footage, the Coast Guard said it believes a shark was a long fin mako or a pelagic thresher shark. That's something to mess with.
Ah, they should have threw a grenade. That would have been way more entertaining on Facebook. I don't know if they have grenades on Coast Guard. Grenade!
Oh, but they got a fucking... They got the deck gun, yeah! Holy moly! Seems a bit excessive.
I've been on a Coast Guard ship. Yeah, but it's a little, it's a little like a, it was practically a pontoon with a fucking, with a minigun that ties to the end of it. Well, they reported that even the inflatable made it up on the back of it. It did, and then they threw it, they threw it back.
They were mad about it. " We're trying to save lives. Oh, well, let's see. All right, Michael.
More than a thousand workers at Universal Hotels have been laid off today. Ooh. Lowest hotels notify the state of Florida. You gotta tell the state, I guess, when you lay people off?
Is that a thing? Well, I think that they're working close with, you know, unemployment and stuff like that, so that they file all the information for them, so there's no major scramble. Temporally laid off or terminate the jobs of more than a thousand employees at a hotel facility at Universal Orlando Resort, citing unexpected circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The company says that they're laying off a total of 839 workers at the Portofino Bay Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel, and Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Hotel.
An additional 176 employees at a support facility will also be laid off. The company says a temporary layoffs will remain in place indefinitely, but for a period that may exceed at least six months. None of the affected employees were represented by the union. So, and then we discussed earlier, Public City's continues one-way aisle arrows.
It's stores where local ordinances don't require them. Stay so long to say so long now the now familiar arrows in public isles telling you which way to go company said they have discontinued the one-way aisles and stores where they are not required by local ordinances we implement one-way aisles at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic we already been over on this so we will continue to provide friendly social distancing reminders in our stores through signage floor markers at checkout and other queuing areas as well as through our public address announcements she said yeah hey you know that sucks They don't. Why does it suck? They took the arrows out.
That's a good thing. That means things are getting better. But people lost jobs. Oh, we're talking about Publix now, not Lowe's.
Oh, I wasn't listening. You did not listen to the entire next story. Was it a phone thing? Did you get a text message?
Yeah, I did. I got a really bad message. It wasn't happening. It was not good news.
Oh. Yeah. What was it? It was product-related.
Oh. But, hey. Something where you're not getting? Did they already say we're not getting 20/21s now?
No, something with a color problem, but it is what it is. Color problem. Uh huh. Womp womp.
Womp womp. So hey, so what happened? Nothing. We have a Listener of the Week.
So there's the arrows, and now the arrows are gone. Fuck you, we're not done. We have a Listener of the Week. I'm sorry, Mike.
It happens. Mike Goshen... Yes? is Listener of the Week.
I know that name. Do you? Yes. I forget what shop he's at, but we had quite the back and forth the other day talking about Powstanie cigars and things.
And you're not going to mention the shop? He's quite the fan. Well, he works at a shop sort of like I work at this shop. Oh, so he doesn't really work at the shop?
Yeah, doesn't really work at the shop. So we had a discussion about that. He loves his cigars. He also is a big fan of the show, and I told him we would give him a shout-out.
So, Mr. Goshen, we'll give you another gong. There you go. Boom.
Boom! Listener of the week. Listener of the week. Yes.
With the strange lighting. The strange lighting. We should do like a seance or something. We're at 47 minutes, we need 3 minutes to be in Pedro time.
Oh, Pedro time. So tell us what the bad news was. There's a little, the bands are a little off color. So I added a secondary band to the War Bear this turn.
Oh, so not from a retailer, something that's coming in. Yeah. Okay, then you can share this. And the reds don't line up.
The red doesn't line up with the, and normally it's a problem that you can resolve, but because of Corona, everything's more complicated. Just don't put the secondary band on. Hell no. The bear is going on there.
I don't care. Oh, because it says Votak on the band? No, it's got the bear. How big is it?
Is it the same size? It's like this big. Move it to the foot where it's further away and they won't notice as much. Oh, that's not a bad idea.
That's why I'm here, Michael. Maybe we do that. Foot band. Then plus, everybody automatically takes it off to light the cigar.
It's true. Problem solved. Okay. All right, Skip, we would like to move the band to the foot, please, and then...
Skip's in Austin, we gotta deal with, we gotta go, we have to deal with troops on the ground right now. Oh, I got you. Esteban, we would like to move the band to the foot, please. I'll take care of it.
Yeah. Donde esta, sabato, foot? Barroqua, Barroqua. Barroqua.
Barroqua. Esteban, Mike. Esteban, Mike. Shake hands, we won't walk away.
That's a conversation that they have all the time. That's the conversation we've ever seen. Esteban, Mike, Esteban, Mike. And we shake hands or hug and we walk away.
Yeah. Which is fun. That's our thing. Fantastic.
How many more minutes? A minute and a half. A minute and a half. Oh.
So, to the foot, you think? That would be a great idea. That would be a great idea. You want to stretch this out.
You really want to stretch this out. Let me see. What else you got? What other bad news you got over there?
Oh, did you see Rosales' movie room? Yeah. Oh, yeah. That's nice.
Jamie posted a picture of date night. And they had a really nice cake for Danny. I didn't see Danny's cake. Yeah.
That was a lovely cake. That's nice. Yeah. Everybody loves cake.
Everybody loves cake. Who doesn't love cake? I like cake. You like cake?
I tried to get Danny to make cake. I really feel like we should just disappoint Pedro and just let's cut it. We're in 15 minutes now. We're in.
Okay. We're in. All right, guys. This has been episode 137.
138? 137. 137. I can see it now that the other light's off.
I can't wait for 138. That's what the problem is. Is that what you're all excited about next week? Yeah.
I can't wait to not listen to your last story next week. I'm going to just make up gibberish stories at the end of the show. You know what? I didn't get a chance to comment about the whole Lowe's thing.
You just rolled into the next one. That was the problem. Well, you stopped. " And then I waited.
I didn't notice you. Look down. I'm watching the thing. Make sure that's running.
I'm trying to make sure this is right. It happens. It happens. There's a light off.
I can't always go. Hey, hey, show. It's a tough podcast. Over here, show.
It's a tough podcast. Maybe I'll just start going. Show, Michael. Show.

All right. Try to keep up. That's a sign of a good podcast. It'd be like four cigars when I walked in a door.
