Episode 45 Advice from the Hustler........ Well its an episode!

Episode 45 Advice from the Hustler........ Well its an episode!

Episode Summary

Episode 45 is an "Advice from the Hustler" installment with no guest — just hosts Mike Szczepankiewicz and Mike (FCC_Mike) riffing on cigar etiquette while the shop is torn apart by renovations. Mike S. titles the episode "Don't Be an Asshole" after a recent bar/brewery event where he watched a first-time smoker sniff a cigar straight through the cellophane. His point: experienced smokers should guide novices gently — tell them to pull the cello off and smell the foot — rather than mock them, and novices should ask questions instead of pretending to know more than they do.

The conversation turns to whether you'd ever share a lit cigar. Both hosts are firmly against passing a cigar around (saliva, germs, and the fact that the flavor profile changes throughout the smoke), though they note it's common at Nicaraguan factories where a cigar worth trying gets the smoked end chopped off first — with Skip Martin at the NACSA/Nica Sueño factory cited as the one guy Mike would have a hard time refusing. They also cover judging other people's cigar choices, what you should hand a total beginner at an event (not Fuente Grand Reserva or Montecristo White territory), and the fact that many new smokers start on infused cigars.

Mike S. revisits his old "Cigar Mentor" honor-system giveaway program — where smokers introduced a non-smoking friend to a cigar, taught them about it, and shared the experience — and floats relaunching it. A long tangent detours into generational gripes, homework, and whether your kids are obligated to take care of you in old age, which the two hosts cheerfully fail to agree on.

The episode closes with event announcements: a December 7 appearance in Philadelphia, Mom's Cigars in Scarsdale NY (where the Lachnick Monster Contest prize pack gets delivered), Jack Toraño at the shop on the 30th, a full week in Miami the week of December 10 with a December 13 Florida Cigar Club event at Smoke on the Water, and a December 15 appearance on Kiss My Ash Radio. The first anniversary-contest hashtag is #StanLee.

Every day I'm hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling. Every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling. Welcome to Cigar Hustlers Podcast, where we take a closer look at the people of the cigar industry, with your host, Mike and Mike. Hustle and hustle, hustle and hustle and hustle.

So today. Wait a minute, something happened. I don't know what happened. I'm going to jump to the end.

Oh, we're going to start over? No, no, we're good. Just keep going. So.

Oh, there we go. So today I jogged today. I ran today. To your appointment?

No. Oh, this morning? Instead of just lifting weights, I ran for an hour. That doesn't sound like any fun at all.

It was like a running and kind of a walking thing. I didn't run the whole time. I don't like to run. And now my legs hurt.

I'm too old. Nobody likes to do it. I'm too old to run. That's a lie.

No, it's not. You're not too old. All right, let's do the thing. Do the thing.

Ready, one, two, three, go. Hi, I'm Mike. And I'm Mike also. See, I changed it up that time.

This is a Cigar Hustlers Podcast. Episode 755 million. We're almost at 52. This is 45.

Hey, it's like a year anniversary. We've been over a year, so I don't know why we're not at 52. I feel like we started, but we didn't, uh, we didn't like go, go. I don't think we were doing it weekly in the beginning.

Really? I don't think we did. That seems like we've always done that. I don't think so.

So? Because the first one we did was seeing a meal right after Halloween. Okay. So, let's give, uh, let's give our listeners a brief update with what's going on in the store, because...

Oh, yes, because they're all just, uh, you know... They gotta know. with bated breath of what's going on here. I mean, the place is still, uh, catastrophizing.

The office is slightly better-ish. Which, as of today, it is slightly better, it's true. We can actually get to the table. I was able to use the office bathroom today.

I made sure that that was a thing a few days ago. I figured as much. I was like, you know what, enough of using the regular bathroom. Yes, I need my privacy.

Privacy. Privacy? In the executive washroom, please. Chop, chop, everybody go.

So hopefully... How much longer? Another six, eight months? Yeah, sometime between now and eventually, it'll be done.

We'll be done. Oh, good. Which is exciting. I hear Greg left to go build the desk for the shipping department.

Ah, it all makes sense? No. And took David with him. Whatever.

It's evidently a two-man job. I think it's just 'cause he's lonely. Well, today's his birthday. Yeah.

Oh, I could've done the birthday stuff for Greg, done a Greg birthday show. So, I think that we should make this one an advice from the hustler. Well, we have to because we have no one to interview. I have a topic.

Well, it doesn't have to be an advice from the hustler. It could be like just a whatever. Well, that's our two options. We interview, we do advice from the Hustler.

The problem is... Advise? Advise from the Hustler? We've actually had a few people pass through the shop that I really wanted to interview, but...

Ryan was here today, while you were gone. Yeah. But one is the place is an absolute catastrophe. Yes, it is.

And two is, you know, you being the successful road warrior that you are... Road warrior, at least. Constantly, constantly out now, so... I'm going to point me tomorrow afternoon.

That's why we're doing this today. I really felt like... Closing another deal. Really?

Yeah. Very nice. Thank you. Proud of you.

Thank you very much. Proud of you. That one guy never answered back after that. That was it.

In dead air, Jay? Dead air. He ghosted me. That's all good.

That's all right. So, I think we should come up with titles for these. Okay. The title of this one is...

But you have to do that because the way this works, you don't tell me what it is beforehand. All right, so the title for this one... Need like a drumroll? Is "Don't Be an Asshole".

Don't be an... oh, I have to leave now. Don't be an asshole. So, I went out and I've done a couple of things, a couple of little events here and there.

Oh yeah, you did one yesterday, didn't you? I did, I did. Oh, I have done some, too. Yeah.

Go ahead. Sorry. I'm interrupting you. It's going to be constant.

Trust me. It's just me and you. So, it wasn't like, but it was more of like a bar scene than it was like a cigar scene. Did they sell cigars normally?

No. So, it was like a bar scene. So, what were you promoting? Well, it's tied in with Cigar City Brewery, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, you know.

You don't sell Cigar City Brewery. I know, but I sell cigars. So I was doing like a... They can't see my face.

I'm making a face at you. Yeah, you are making a face. I was doing like a trivia thing and just kind of get out there and... Mike Szczepankewicz trivia night?

Well, I wasn't doing, I was just participating and, you know, I had like... Oh, so now you're such a big deal that if you just attend someone else's event, they bill it as Michael Szczepankewicz is appearing. No, I think that was just slightly mentioned at the end, to be honest. After it's all over?

Oh yeah, but no, no. All right, the winner is Steve and Bob here from UCF. They won. Oh, and that guy over there, that's Mike Szczepankevich from Cigar Housley.

Well, either way, thank you for shitting all over me, but it was really cool, and I had a good time. I'm being an asshole. I'm trying to help you out. But, you know, that kind of gets me into the topic that I want to talk about.

Okay. It's very – there's a big – there's a huge gap between your entry-level kind of casual first-time cigar smoker and your guy who does it every day, right? A lot of times people will – they try and personify that they know more than what they do, right? Yes.

First and foremost. Yes. And that's a major issue on both ends of the spectrum, whether you're a novice, the guy that doesn't really smoke, as well as, you know, if you're a guy that smokes often, and, you know, you tote about this one particular brand, or whatever the case may be. That's two of the five guys that are in every cigar shop.

Yeah, yeah, so, you know, the, so a few things had occurred in front of me, and, you know, it took a minute for me to kind of realize that I need to not be an asshole. Oh, I see where this is going. And it kind of, and I'm like, wow, this is a good topic to discuss, because, you know, we all have friends that don't smoke, but they'll smoke around you and stuff like that, or, you know, they try, they feel like they try and be cool. I mean, I think I don't know about it, whatever the case may be, right?

But like the first thing that happened to me when I sat down is a guy, I started to talk to a guy about cigars, he picked up one, and he smelled it right through the cellar, right? Oh, I hate when they do that. So, but here's the thing. " The guy, but he doesn't know, right?

" Try it without the plastic, sir. See how much better it smells. Yeah, so like, you know, the right thing to do in that scenario is say, hey, you know, you really should take it out and smell the foot and, you know, get some scents, whatever. Right.

From the aroma of the cigar. The aroma of the cigar, not the cellar. Yes, please, try the aroma of the cigar. I think more often than not, the knee-jerk reaction is, this guy's a fucking idiot, and, you know, you wanna...

It'd be better if you, like, licked the flesh and go, oh, this tastes delicious. But, you know, so that's kind of like the first thing that is important. You know, don't don't if you're with somebody and they don't know what they're doing, even if they act like they know what they're doing, because they're going to act like they know what they're doing. You got to find a way to kind of casually guide them without embarrassing them.

Right. Say, hey, listen, you know, you really should try it like this. Hey, buddy, it smells like plastic. Take the plastic off and then sniff it again.

So that was the first thing. The second thing that was really kind of weird for me, and I'm going to start by asking you a question. Would you ever share your cigar with somebody? There's a very, very tiny group of people.

Really? Like my wife. I mean, that's like the entire group, because I light her cigars for her. Okay.

" Like right now I'm smoking a HVC Pan Caliente. Right, I noticed. If I passed it to you, would you take a draw from it? No.

No, I wouldn't. And I like to think we're pretty good friends, too. I mean, I'd give you mouth-to-mouth if you died right here in the office, but I don't think we're gonna share a cigar. I experienced a lot of sharing of a cigar in front of me yesterday, which was...

Really? Did you sell cigars there? No, I just gave a couple out, kind of talked with people. So you took the giant Powstanie and our.

I didn't, it wasn't a sale thing, it was more like just support and you know. Did you know the guy that owned the bar? No. The beer guy?

You knew the beer guy? No. Brittany's cousin, my wife's cousin, so I call her my cousin, runs the bar. So I wanted to, she asked me if I'd go out and you know.

So they allow smoking in the bar? No, they got like an outside patio, it was really nice. Okay. Like an ale house type deal?

Yeah. Yeah, so like, you know, I don't know where, I'm like a germaphobe, so I'm not a big, I'm not a huge fan of that, not to mention that it's like, for one, you know, saliva builds on the back end of a cigar, right, and for two, I mean, the flavor profile is different throughout the entire cigar, so you're going to pass off a hit and, you know. You know who likes to do that? Hunt.

" Well, you know, I mean, in Nicaragua, that's super common. Like, here, check this out. Try it, try it, try it. Really?

So like at the factory, you guys are testing cigars? Could that play out? Yes, that could play out. So just to drop his name, so you're hanging out with Skip, Skip Martin at the Nika Swinia factory, and he's going, hmm, this one's really good, Mike, here, here, try this.

Normally, if there's something that's a must-try, it'll get cut. So he'll bring it over to the table, he'll chop off the back end of it. Oh, chop off the smoking in where he was. Yeah.

Oh, okay, that makes more sense. Because, you know what, I might be a little intimidated to not offend Mr. Martin if he did that. no how do you say no all right all right what are you doing so you're saying so you're saying is with certain people in this industry if you find yourself in a dark room and their pants are down it's it's and it has to happen it's gonna happen i do have a line i don't want to disappoint you know what and i really can't i don't know why skip intimidates me so much on either but uh i can't really think of anybody else that i would uh you know go well that's kind of easygoing man It's just opinion, dude.

It's not wrong with that. I just don't know him well. I mean, I'd tell Rosales, go, nah, I'm not smoking after you, no. Really?

I know him a lot better than I know Skip. So you don't respect Rosales? That's not what I said. I respect his opinion and go, oh, I'm sure that is good.

I'll just take your word for it. Oh, I just found that out. I can use that with anybody. Really?

You know what? My palate is so underdeveloped, Skip, I don't think I would do it justice if I tried. So I'll just take your word for it. So my point for the kind of the conversation is like, how do you, for one, if you do smoke often, you need a lighter?

I got one in my pocket. I got one in my pocket. For one, if you are a regular cigar smoker, you really need to work on not being an asshole, right? Especially if you come across somebody that doesn't...

Okay, because I got a little confused at the beginning, so this is more about how you, as an experienced cigar smoker, is not an asshole to a novice. Well, it's kind of, it's both ends. It's both ends. I mean, you're kind of jumping to conclusions, which is fine.

I'm just trying to help out the crowd. That's not only what you do. Trying to help the crowd. The listeners.

So, you know, if you see a guy that's not doing the right thing as far as, you know, cello sniffing, or not cutting the cigar right, I'd probably let the not cutting go unless he was, you know, making it to a point where like, you know, he cuts three quarters of an inch off the end or something. I mean, that happens. Oh, I know it does. I mean, you know, I had a couple guys that were there yesterday and, you know, they were intrigued and they wanted to kind of learn about stuff.

And then when they got, once they had their first couple hits of it, they ran away. " And you took your cigars? Yeah. Well, it's not like they were starting out with training wheels either at that point.

No, no, no. I didn't, you know, I didn't know what I was walking into. But, like, so, okay, so what should I bring next time? Some Fuente Grand Reservas and some fucking...

Monte Cristo Whites or something, you know? Fuck that. That shit, those are expensive. Those are way over-priced.

Well, Caffey's got a fine line of bundles of theirs. Oh, get out of here. Get out of here with that shit. This week's episode brought to you by...

No, no, no. So, anyways, I don't see a check anywhere. So anyways, you know, curving that behavior of the, or like, let's say a guy loves a particular cigar. Maybe you don't like that cigar, right?

I'm nodding. Nobody can see me nodding. But you instantly judge them. You're like, "That's a horrible cigar.

" See, I don't do that, because cigars are like food. I do that sometimes. I'm not gonna lie. Well, you do.

I'm sure you do. Usually to like... You're a snob. Wow, that's hurtful.

It's hurtful. You're a cigar star. Very aggressive. So, it's not, um, I don't, like, just randomly shit on people.

If you're like... No, but you can see it in your face as somebody... If they're inner circle to me, and they're close to me, um, sometimes I voice my opinion when I probably shouldn't. Um, but that brings us back to don't be an asshole.

The other side of don't be an asshole is, you know, if you really don't know, don't act like you know. It's better off to have questions. It's better off to learn. That's hard for a lot of guys, though.

" Well, that's just ignorant. So how do you change that, Michael? I don't know, I think it's the millennials' problem. I don't think that it's a millennial issue.

No, I'm just blaming them for everything, though. It's my new thing. Well, I would suggest that you stop doing that. Oh, you're a millennial, aren't you?

For one, I am. What's the generation after you? My wife and I were actually talking about this yesterday because she deals with high school kids. Generation Z or some shit?

I don't know, something like that. And there's a lot of them that don't apply for colleges, don't do the homework. Well, yeah, but now it's almost too late now to get into one in the fall. Get into one in the fall.

Actually, major university it is, the deadline was yesterday. Well, there's always next semester. Yeah, but that's just it, they keep putting it off. And now with the new, well, I'm probably, I shouldn't talk about this, so, no.

With the no child left behind? Yeah. Like, I don't know how it was when you were in school or when I was in school. If you did your homework, it was zero, it was done.

Right. Now it's like, well, just turn it in later, Billy, whenever you happen to get it finished. That's cool. Well, no, it's not.

These people are the ones who are going to take care of me when I'm old. The doctors and the lawyers who didn't do their homework and they just got grades. Participation trophies for everybody. Yeah, exactly.

That's who it is anymore. Well, you know. But no, you can't say that that's everybody. No, no, it's not everybody.

So there's still a couple of good ones out there. Oh, so. Which is realistically... I'm gambling on that.

Which is realistically every single generation. I reached my early to mid-50s. Well, if you're counting on somebody else to take care of you... I have children.

That's why you have children. Well, you're definitely fucked. If that's your mentality... My kids will.

Connor will. Connor will take care of me. Yeah, hey, why don't we just bank that? Put that away.

I'm taking care of my parents now. " Yeah, but you're a different... Printer doesn't work. But you have a - okay, first of all, you're the type of guy that has a mentality of "I am here to please, I want to take care of people", especially your parents, right?

Yes. But, saying that your kids are going to have that same mentality is ignorant. I don't think so. You raised them that way.

Okay. You think I'm not this way because of the way my parents raised me? We're getting into some deep shit here. We are.

We're kind of deviating. That's fine. No, I don't... You don't think your children take care of you when you get older?

I will never ever put that on them. No, you don't intentionally. I mean, it's not, you know, not the plan. Like, I'm going, spend all the money now, honey, because the kids will have some later.

It isn't a don't intentionally. It's just, you know, I would never put that on them. I think it becomes a challenge. I saw my parents take care of their parents when they got older.

We have a set of friends that have no children, and they brought up, they go like, "When we get old, this is it, it's just us. " Yeah, I don't agree with that. Well, who's gonna take care of them? The system?

No, I think that you're kind of responsible for yourself. Yes, but you do get to a point where there's certain things that you can't do because of either it's too hard for you to do physically or too hard for you to do mentally. So you get like a nice nurse or something like that? Or are you going to assisted living that you, you know, you save them, you pay for?

Use your kids. Couldn't disagree more on that topic. Well, then we'll just agree to disagree and go back to being an asshole. Yeah, you just bank on everybody else taking care of your fucking problems, Michael.

You'll be alright. Not everybody. I don't want your kids to come take care of me. It's not their job.

It's not your kids' job either. Yes, it is. I took care of them. They'll take care of me.

No, no, no. No, no, no. Yes, yes, yes. Yes, yes, yes.

So, back in the day, I did like a mentor program, and I'm thinking about- Like a big brother program? Well, I called it Cigar Mentor. Oh. So, it was all about- Back in the day, when did you do this?

I mean, you were only eight years into this. So, seven years ago? I don't know. You mentored someone, or someone mentored you?

I don't know. You want me to tell you, or you just want to guess? Sorry. You go ahead.

No, this is going to be my answer to your question there. I'm just going to shut up again. What's your next question? That's the next question.

Turn off my microphone. I'm trying to interact. No, so the cigar mentor, I know, and you're doing a great job, and I'm proud of you. Thank you.

Otherwise, it'd just be you talking for the last 20 minutes. I know, and when you can't talk, Connor will speak for you. Exactly, that's the plan. I'll just point at things.

So it was like a kind of a giveaway that I did that, you know, it was on the honor system, but people would reach out to a person that didn't smoke cigars and try and educate them on that. And if the person decided to smoke a cigar, they'd smoke the cigar with them, or whatever the case may be, and they posted it up, and I calculated everybody, and I gave away some stuff. I think it was pretty cool. So I might do that again.

Why don't you do like a class like Jose Blanco did at the event? Not as in-depth, actually. I mean, it's not like, you know, take a hit of your cigar and take a drink of this and see how well that went, but... That kind of defeats the purpose.

I mean, I'd rather, you know... We could do a whole show. It's more about, for me, you know, the culture and education of the industry as a whole, not particularly aimed at, you know, I don't know, a cigar or anything like that. I mean, because, you know, some people like smoking, start, a lot of people will start with an infused cigar.

Correct. So what am I going to do, light a bunch of blondies up? You could do a... A bunch of foundation small axes, I mean?

Cigar sampler starter pack. No, it's not about the sale. It's about a blanketing... Well, don't pay, don't charge people.

Just give it all away and just lose money. Sounds great. You know, I'm gonna do that. I'm actually gonna go set my wallet on fire and...

I found the lighters in my pocket. And I'll make sure that Connor can take care of me, your son. No, your children take care of you, not my children. No, my children are not responsible for me.

Well, mine certainly aren't responsible for you. They're responsible for me? No, I said certainly not responsible for you. Well, I mean, he's already got the pressure, so what's the difference?

There's no pressure. Doesn't Greg take care of your mother? I don't know. You do too.

Does your mother listen? No. Yeah, mine doesn't either. She doesn't like me smoking cigars.

You're smoking cigars! Better get over that, mom! So I guess that's pretty much what I got to say. So maybe we work on re-initiating that.

So explain again, I didn't follow you, how that worked. Cigar Mentor? Yeah, how did that work again? So let's say you have friends and one of these...

Let's say I do. Let's say you have friends. Okay. Let's say one of those friends that you're close with doesn't smoke cigars.

Okay, I got one in mind. Okay, so, you know, you present them a cigar, you educate them on it, and tell them, you know, why is it that you like it so much, and they ask them if they want to try one with you. Okay. So, you know, knowledge is kind of passed that way, right?

Right. With, you know, cultivation of relationships. But it was something where, so I have bought him a cigar. I have paid for his cigar.

Not necessarily. Well, how did I get it? Well... I'm trying to see how this works here in the shop.

So I bring this guy in, let's say. He's asked several questions about cigars. I have a friend in mind. He's asked questions.

He asked what I like to smoke and that kind of stuff. And we've talked about it, but he's never had one. Well, he has years ago, but didn't enjoy it. I think he inhaled because he got sick.

So we come in here and I go, okay, you know what, this will be good. So then he smokes it. So then we bought it at that point. Well, in that scenario, if I were you, I'd probably buy him the cigar, you know, just because you're a good dude and you've got a good friend and, you know, you want to burn one with them.

Right. So, I mean, if you need the money for the cigar, because you're saving up for retirement, I'll gladly give you a pay-for-your-cigar. I've been eyeballing those three on the desk over there. They've been there for quite a while.

Leave them alone. They're mine. They have fit the profile for the mine. You haven't been able to get in this office in the past three weeks.

I have. Bullshit. Who do you think cleans this place up? David.

Not in here. And John. They've cleared all the boxes. It's because you had to go to the bathroom.

No, they did it afterwards. Oh. It's almost to the point where the office could be reclaimed. Maybe.

Maybe tomorrow. So yeah, that's all I got for you today. So that's it. You got any events coming up?

I'm going to B&B December 7th in Philadelphia. Is that where you're going to be smoking with our friend John? No, no. I'll be smoking with John more than likely at probably JR's and Whippany is where he likes to go.

But I have another event at Mom's Cigars Warehouse in Scarsdale? Scars? Scars? Scars?

New York? Scarsdale, California? Scarsdale, Arizona? Scarsboro?

Scars something or other? I don't know, Scars something or other. In New York. We should probably mention he did win the Lachnick Monster Contest.

Ah, yes. The Lachnick Monster. So, Mike will be bringing you your prize pack to Scarsdale or Winnipepe or whippany. As long as I can find them, because-- Well, you might have to give them something else.

Life is a disaster right now. Because even I don't know where they are. Which is bad. That's how bad it is, I don't know where they're at.

Mm-hmm. All right, well, 25 minutes. Sounds good to me. Um, well, you've got the 30th here at the shop, Jack Taranio will be here, Big Jack.

That's true. Oh, we could do a Big Jack show. I like Big Jack shows. As long as you're here.

It's a Friday, right? Yeah. Yeah, I'll be here. Okay.

And episode of FTG. FTG. The week of December 10th, I'm going to be down in Miami for the entire week, and there is a large event they're doing for me on the 13th at Smoke on the Water, if anybody wants to come by. You're going to be down at Smoke on the Water?

Are they carrying Florinatas? They, according to Joan, they do carry them, but they have not reordered. Hmm, okay. But it's not a Florinata event, it's a Florida Cigar Club event.

Well, I don't think I'll be back in town by then. Will I be back in town by then? I don't know. It's the 13th.

It's like a Thursday. When are you leaving for Miami? The 10th, on a Monday. I won't be back.

I'm going down there for the whole week. We're going to hit shops the whole week. I was going to suggest going with you. Oh.

But I won't be back in town until Tuesday. Well, come down Tuesday. No, I was going to jump in your car. Oh.

Well, fly down. Fly! You're a man of means. Wow.

Joan and I will pick you up. Johan. Johan. And then that Saturday, the 15th, as of right now, we're scheduled to be on Kiss My Ass Radio.

Again? No, that's, well, I'll be on it again with him. He's never been on it before. Oh.

Nice. I'll be on it with him. Good for you. You know, busy, busy, busy, busy, busy, busy, busy, busy, busy, busy, busy, busy.

I think that concludes this. So we need to, I feel like we just rambled here for 30 minutes. Don't be an asshole. Yeah, but there's only two things not to be an asshole.

Don't share your cigar with anyone. That isn't necessarily being an asshole. Cellophane, judging people by what they smoke, you know, stuff like that. Those things are important.

Oh. Right? There's gonna be a low-rated show. Low-rated show.

And on the other hand... Wow. And on the other hand... What was I saying?

So the advice of a hustler is... If you don't know... Yeah, if you don't know, don't act like I know. If you're a time sucker, you're an asshole?

I'm just stretching the show now. I'm done talking to you. Bye. Bye, guys.

Thanks for listening. Tune in next week when we will do a better job than we did this week. All right, guys. Thanks a lot.

This is the Operator with a collect ball from... To accept the charges, press one, now. All right, folks, that's it. Show's over.
