Episode 46 Advice from the Hustler..... Be A Team PlayerWe are on a roll

Episode Summary

Episode 46 of A Cigar Hustler's Podcast is a no-guest, two-hosts-and-a-microphone conversation between Mikey (the shop side) and Mike (FCC_Mike, the broker/rep side) about "core principles" in the cigar industry. After some banter about studio gremlins, the shop's post-renovation cleanup and the one-year mark since the re-grand opening on Black Friday, the hosts get into the real subject: how people in the cigar trade treat each other, and how easy it should be to simply do the right thing.

The heart of the episode is an honest look at life as a cigar broker. Mike shares what he's learning as a newer rep — brands that ghost him after a couple of questions, companies that want full territory coverage without paying properly, and the revolving door where reps get dropped, picked up by a competitor, and sometimes return to the same company that burned them. Mikey argues that if a brand owner can't pay a rep what they're worth but genuinely believes in them, the answer is equity and partnership, not squeezing them — and that no business, from a small cigar brand to Amazon or Microsoft, is built by one person alone. They also touch on the "everybody's self-serving" counterargument, the incestuous nature of Florida's rep community, and a comparison to pharmaceutical sales and the perks doctors receive.

Along the way the guys talk about what they're smoking and their daily rotation — Highclere Castle, E.C. Brotherly Kindness, the Aganorsa Connecticut box press, HVC La Rosa, and an aged Southern Draw Cigars stick pulled from a forgotten box — plus a birthday shout-out to HVC's Lorenzo. Mike closes with his appearance schedule: a Caffé 1901 cut-and-light at Cutters in Brandon alongside the Florida Cigar Club holiday party, the Cigar Heritage Festival in Ybor City, Mom's Cigar Warehouse in New York, Philadelphia with Vince Hill, JR Cigars in Paramus with John Jurgalette, and a Kiss My Ash Radio appearance translating for Johan.

Every day I'm hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling, hustling. Every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling, every day I'm hustling. Welcome to Cigar Hustlers Podcast, where we take a closer look at the people of the cigar industry, with your host, Mike and Mike. Hustle and hustle, hustle and hustle.

Hit the button, hit the button. I hit the button, hit the button. I hit the button. Hi, Michael.

Hello, Michael. How has your morning been, Michael? Great. Good.

A lot calmer now. Is this going to be better than last week's show? Hey, man, I got a lot of good compliments on last week's show. Did you really?

Just for the record. Oh. Just want you to know that people appreciate our witty banter. Oh.

We should make a drinking game. Every time I interrupt you, they have to take a drink. We will have all five listeners shit-faced. It's a 30-minute show, how drunk can they get?

I mean, possible levels of intoxication where... Talk about yourself, there's something in my eyeball. That has nothing to do with your voice. No, but I can't see.

How does one get something in their eye when they wear glasses? It was there to start with. Alright, you wanna go ahead and do the thing? I wanna do the thing, let's do the thing.

Alright, ready, one, two, three, go! Hi, I'm Mike, and my name is Mike, too. This is the Cigar Hustlers podcast. I'm going to try to do something different each time.

Episode 7500. 46, I believe it is. We are so close to the year. So close to the 52.

So close. What should we do for the 52 show? I don't know. Oh, we have an echo.

We should commit. No. No, no. It's like we're talking like robots.

Is it permanent? I don't know what happened. Can you fix it? Maybe.

Let's just go with it and see what happens. No, let's not go with it. All right, hold on, we'll start over. Keep this operation tip-top.

Okay, we're back. Okay. I don't know what happened. So it works?

It didn't sound bad when I went back to check the feed, so it must be in the headphones. What does "didn't sound bad" mean? It sounded good. Okay.

We sounded like robots in my head and it was really freaking me out. The drugs. The drugs. I need more drugs.

So just for the record, you know. Might be the Anathal I started the day with. Yeah. We don't need a fucking, we don't need anybody.

We don't need a guest. Fuck the guest. We need no guest. We did great.

We did great last week. You know, I mean, I feel like you weren't happy, but our listeners were happy. That's what's important, that we make the listeners happy. Yeah, they said, Jesus.

Yogi's already asked me where to show us today. He's bored and needs something to listen to. They said, Mr. Palmer does not respect you at all or anything you have to say.

I'm like, yeah, that's my life. But nobody does. But nobody does. So what do you want to talk about today?

I don't know. It's cold here. Yeah? It's definitely cold here.

Definitely cold here. I don't know. I haven't seen you a lot lately. Been busy, busy.

Yeah. The shop is... The shop is much better. It is.

It's like at 95 and a half percent, maybe? I mean, I think that you're optimistic, but yes, it's much better. And I straightened up the studio this morning so that your lovely wife can get to her desk. Yes, I now have the task of my brothers like clean this office.

What are you gonna do with the stuff that's left? I don't know what the, I mean, it's not like I do anything around here, so I might as well just clean all this stuff up. I bought a new vacuum. I was very, very excited to use the new vacuum.

I ordered that on the Amazon. Well, the last one sounded like a nuclear bomb siren was going off. Well, it did, Craig and I sort of, it's got that button where you turn the beater bar on and off. That stopped working like a year ago, we hardwired it to, uh, it's always on.

It's always on. When you plug it in, it's always on. And the way that he talked about that vacuum was like that vacuum was God's gift. Is that a Dyson?

That thing lasted eight years. I don't think it lasted eight years. I think it was like a four year old. We've only been here.

Seven. We've been here eight years. Is it eight now? Yeah, but that vacuum, we didn't get that vacuum off the rip.

It didn't come with the shop? No. No. You know, yesterday on my Facebook time, hot memory thing, whatever, this is almost one year from the re-grand opening.

Yeah. That makes sense. Yeah. I didn't sound like it meant that long ago.

That was in, yeah, we did that in December. Well, I should have been the end of November. I feel like it was December. Oh, I know.

Oh, you know what? It was Black Friday. Oh, that's right. So yeah, that was, that it was November.

Okay. So yeah, we got that going. Got that going. Are you going to do a re-re-grand opening?

No. No. No. When's the customer appreciation thing?

Never. I no longer appreciate our customers. Oh, it's terrible. Womp womp.

That's terrible. I don't know, that's going to happen in a couple of weeks. Well, you normally do it when that other thing's going on, but that's not going to happen. It's too close.

Yeah, no. So, we've got to... Maybe the crab trees will come down. We've got to get that going actually.

It's December starting Saturday. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So, I think I know what I want to talk to you about, Michael. Yes.

Yeah. Yes, Michael. want to talk about principles principles like the principal of a high school no no principal of a bank because that's a whole your principles and the people that you know and your schools is a whole other topic of discussion topic and i don't want to put you on blast michael don't don't don't put me on blast don't put me in blast i will stop this show right now i want to talk about don't make me come over to the stable core principles core principles simple principles that you can live by That people should live by in the cigar industry that they don't. So many different personalities in the cigar industry, I find out.

There is a lot. There's a lot of people in the cigar industry. And so, I'm going to start this conversation by saying that I'm not talking about anybody in general, but for some strange reason, if you start thinking that maybe I'm talking about you, maybe you're doing something wrong. And maybe you should kind of look into your life and, you know, chain some shit around because you're not living off of the core principles.

You know what, I finished my cigar, so I'm going to grab something off the table here. Okay. Oh, I don't think, is there anything in that box? I know where everything is.

Son of a bitch, you checked before. Yes, when I was cleaning up the office so your wife could get their desk, there was one in there. An SBC? SBC 16.

Oh, my God. A 16. Not an 18. You can't have that.

Why not? Okay, you can have it. That's fine. Wait, everybody's here.

I'm opening the cellophane. Oh my god. You're giving me agita. Agita?

What's agita? Oh, I have no cutter. That's all right, I have a knife. I have a cutter.

You have your scissors? Yeah. I might have to get some scissors. Seems to be the tool of choice lately.

Be cool with all the other cool guys. So, how hard is it just to do the right fucking thing? I think it's gotta be hard as a rock. It's been sitting there for months.

I didn't even know it was in here. So, Michael, tell me, how hard is it to just do the right thing? Like, do unto others, right? Well, do unto others, but it's all a matter of your opinion of what you think the right thing is.

It's very subjective. " No. No, who would want to be the guy that gets fucked on? Fucked with?

Fucked over? But my issue is that, you know, I think more often than not, people try and justify it. They say, oh, it's okay because, you know, whatever the case may be, I built this and, you know, this is like my shtick and, you know, so I can not pay somebody the proper amount to handle my personal affairs and my business. Because, you know, I was here first.

Like, I don't get that. Like, I get, I understand that people make businesses. I understand that people make wise decisions and make mistakes in the decisions. And I think I'm being too cryptic.

No, you're not. I think I'm being too cryptic. I'm not being too cryptic. Like, I don't have brokers.

No, but everybody, my dad always says, son, everybody's self-serving. Don't be surprised when anybody does. Everybody's always looking out for number one. And you know what, dude?

There is nothing wrong with looking out for number one. You got to take care of yourself first, because nobody else is going to take care of you. No. I get that.

But that doesn't mean that you get the right to screw people over around you. Well, yeah, but I'm just being devil's advocate here, because I agree with everything you're saying. You always are devil's advocate. That's my job.

I'm the devil of the show. If you are just looking out for yourself, you don't think that you're doing anything bad to anybody else. Here's the problem, if you're just looking out for yourself, if you're just looking out for yourself, then you're not growing. If you're just looking out for yourself, then you're not...

Oh, we're getting deep again. Oh, absolutely, man. Deep, deep, deep, deep. It's the truth.

You know, it's good to look out for yourself. I agree with that. You need to. You need to protect your best interest.

But, with that being said, you know, if you have a vision, and that vision incorporates other people, you need to go ahead and give those people what they deserve. Let me know when you're off your phone. I feel like whenever I get on these tangents, you fucking get on your goddamn phone. No, no, I'm posting the picture to let everybody know that we're doing the show for today, now.

Let's take a wait ten fucking minutes when we're done with this short clip. This isn't a 10 minute show. This isn't or is a 10-minute show? This is not a 10-minute show.

We are a minimum of a 28-and-a-half-minute show. So they can wait 28-and-a-half minutes. Well, no, because people are asking for it now already! They can wait.

See? I'm done. You need to be selfish and take care of yourself first, before you tell these people what's going on with the podcast. You just said that if you're taking care of yourself, you're not looking out for others.

I'm thinking of all our five listeners. See, that's the problem. We have five devoted listeners. You may hear me, but you're not listening.

You're not listening. What did you say? The fact of the matter is that you do need to take care of yourself first. I get that.

But, and that's a big fucking but. Big but. You need to also look out. Like baby got back but.

Look out for the other people that are around you. The guys that are going to build you up. It's not a one man army. It doesn't work that way.

It doesn't work that way in any fucking business. No ifs ands or buts. You know? I don't know what I'm supposed to say.

Bezos fuckin' relied on the fuckin' United States Postal Service and abused the shit out of them and made him fuckin' the richest man on earth. I mean, that's not entirely true. My point is that he didn't do it alone. No, damn it.

Right? Bill Gates didn't do it alone. Takes a team. You know what?

He used to get up every day at 4:30 in the morning. It does take a team. Yeah? Yes.

Who? Bill Gates. Did he? I don't know.

I read that the other day. It was a list of all the... It's successful CEOs and how they're always up working where everybody else is sleeping. Yeah, you got to get up and take care of them.

Got to get up and go. Got to get up. Got to do it. Got to hustle.

But you don't shit on the people around you. " That proves to me that you're not, that that person doesn't have potential, that the person shouldn't be a part. You're better off saying, hey, look, I don't want you to be a part of this organization because you're just not a good fit for me. Like, there's nothing wrong with saying that.

No, like the guy that ghosted me? Like the guy that ghosted you, whoever that was. What guy ghosted you? I can't even pronounce the name of his brand, so I don't care.

Oh. But he asked a couple questions, and boop, she shut down. Yeah, no, absolutely. He didn't bother actually to find out that, you know...

That's the same scenario. Who I am and what I bring to the table. He didn't care. Right.

Yeah. Right. I can put that guy on blast if you want. Oh, we can put him on blast.

I don't care. What difference is that going to make to me at this point? We can do that. It's just kind of, I mean, but that's the funny thing.

Like, you know, as you're kind of going through this experience as being a broker, I'm definitely, it's definitely bringing my eyes wide open to me. Oh, yeah, because you're seeing another side. And it's just, it's atrocious. Like, I would never ever treat any human being the way that you're kind of treated with some of these dudes.

It's embarrassing to be a part of the cigar industry, or any industry that indirectly or directly treats people like shit. Just say it like it is. I mean, you know, it just doesn't make sense. Like, I don't have brokers.

I don't have brokers. You have had, though. I have. You have had in the past.

If I dabbled in that with not with Powstanie, but with Shogui, yeah, we have, and it's not a fit, you know, it's expensive, it cuts into margins, and, you know, the product that I represent is all small inventory, it doesn't make sense to do it, so, you know, when some people have tried, when some of the people that I represent wanted to have tried brokers, of course, we gave it a shot, but, you know, it doesn't make sense. But now, you know, our brands do fairly well, but I'm not... Well, you're your own broker. Yeah, of course.

You guys have the advantage to where there's two of you, you and Greg both, and you have separate jobs, so you can do the sales while he's doing something else. Whatever Greg does. Whatever Greg does. You just go ahead and let me know if you could fill me in.

He builds a lot of stuff. That'd be great. Yeah, he's very good at what he does. Whatever that is.

Whatever that is. But it's different than, let's say, well, like Victor, because Victor uses you guys. He uses you guys, Victor from Shogui, he couldn't do what you do by himself. Right, but my point is, of course, but like, I don't look at Victor and say, "Hey, you know, let me just take advantage of you and say, 'Hey, I can get you in these accounts and you have a great product, but you know, I'm gonna need you to pay me up front or something ridiculous, right?

Like, you work as a team. You build each other up. Like, that's kind of the thing. Whether you're on the same level playing field or not, the people that you work with are the guys you're supposed to take care of.

And that's kind of the part of this industry that I don't understand. I mean, brokers get fucked all the time. All the time. And, you know, it's very hard, it's difficult to see that, for one, it's so incestuous.

That if, you know, you're not one of three guys in the state of Florida, you know, you jump from company to company, and sometimes you go back to the company that screwed you over originally, which doesn't make sense to me either. Yeah, it doesn't make any sense at all. Why would you go back? They're just going to end up doing it again.

Like, I don't get any of that. It's just, you know, why not form a partnership and say, "Hey, look, this is what we're going to do. We're going to do the right thing by it. If it works out, great.

If it doesn't, it doesn't. There's no hard feelings. Like, I just don't get that. I don't get why you would go back, no.

And some of the people out there, I mean, they've been let go for various reasons, and then somebody else picks them up, don't they know where they were let go from the other place? Yeah. See, that makes no sense to me, either. Yeah, like, that, too, doesn't make any fucking sense.

No, you see the same people over and they're like, "You're with who now? " So you have situations where you have guys that don't do their job, but they can still get their job. They can still get other jobs, which is interesting. Then you have guys that own companies or, you know, to some degree, but they don't want to pay somebody properly, but they want them on as their team.

Like, I don't understand how that works. If you want to do something like that, that's fine. But give them shares in their corporation. Make them a partner.

If you believe in them and you think that they're going to be, you know, advantageous to your company, and you can't pay them, give them shares. Say, hey, look, man, you know, this is what I think. Here are the numbers that I want to be at. Here are my projections.

Here's what I need you to produce. Can you do that? Cool. If you think you can do that, awesome.

And if you can do that, here's what we're going to guarantee you. We're going to give you the X amount of the corporation. Because you are going to be a pillar in this business. Well, that's what everybody told me when I started doing this, that you really have two options.

Either you're really successful and then they bring a guy in-house and they let you go, or you don't make the numbers and then they let you go. Yeah, so you sort of just ride the wave as long as you can and hope you pick up enough. Even Groover goes, I get all the way up to here and then somebody drops me and then I'm back down. And then I get all the way back up to here and then somebody drops me and I'm back down.

It's so crazy, man. It is, it is. There's probably like that in any industry, though. I don't think so.

No? I don't think so. Are there brokers? I mean, you might not know either, but are there brokers like in, say, the pharmaceutical industry?

Because that's a famous salesman-type industry. But there's a ton of money in the pharmaceutical industry. Oh, tons of money, tons of money. But if you work, you normally work for one company.

You're not, I don't know if they have pharmaceutical brokers. I guess they would. I mean, which is corrupt in itself. I mean, they bring, you know, cakes and handle lunches and dinners and shit for people.

Yeah, you can't give the doctor money. But you can take them on a trip to Tahiti, though. Right. Yeah.

Oh, there was a big thing in the news recently. Doctors are using medical devices because they're getting perks from the companies that, like, you may not need. That was just in the news last week. Really?

Yeah. We could get an insulin pump. But I don't have diabetes. No, no, you need this.

Here's your prescription. Check this out. Check this out. Well, I'm fortunate to have, you know, I'm surrounded, I'm SBD.

Surrounded by doctors. Oh, yeah, I know. So, I have some good friends that guide me in the right direction, which is kind of nice. Yep, we do have that concierge doctor on call.

Which is, uh, he's mobile MD, I call him mobile MD. Mobile MD. Like, hey, does this rash look bad? Oh, yeah, him, yeah.

" Just outright, hey. You can't just call him, just send him a picture of his nose, have him take a look that way. So I don't- Which he probably would do actually. He would.

He would. So but like, I don't think that, you know, every- I don't think that that's kind of the going standard in all businesses. I think that the businesses that are successful properly develop and take care of the people that are part of their business. Like that makes sense.

Yes. You don't fucking take advantage of somebody. You don't turn around and say, hey, well, you know, I want you to handle, whatever, $100,000 in sales and in my location and, you know, or in your state and not handle anything else. Like, that's stupid.

That doesn't make sense to me. Stupid. If you want somebody, then properly pay them. If you don't want them, then...

Don't bring him in halfway. Then don't expect me to ever fucking carry you, I could tell you that much. Because that's just ridiculous. Ridiculous.

You got anything to add? I have no idea where this went. Just do the right thing. Do the right thing.

Take the advice from the hustler. You have no idea where it went because you keep playing on your phone. I haven't touched my phone. Your phone goes off and you look right and then you get side to it.

Well, I can't help that. I'll turn it over. Where's my phone, Michael? I don't know, normally it's right on the table.

I have no idea where my phone is. It's right there, it's it, it's right there. Oh, I can't see it from this view. It's 'cause you're laying down in the chair with your feet up, like you're the king.

I'm very relaxed. I had my off-air rant. Yes, we shouldn't have done the off-air rant. Prior to.

No, I think that the off-air rant went very well, 'cause I wouldn't want to come on here as hot as I was. No, no, no. Because it would have been like, I would have said really, really bad things about people. Yes, you can't do that.

People that, it doesn't matter what your religion is, what your beliefs are, whatever the case may be. The fact of the matter is that principles are principles, you know? They're universal. Sorry, I take a drink.

The cigar's a little dry. Principles are universal. So what are you smoking? Why change the subject?

I'm not, I'm just adding two. We're 20 minutes, we could actually cut now and we're good. A Highclere Castle. Oh.

I like to start my day with EC Brotherly Kindness, Highclere Castle, or the new Aganorsa Connecticut Box Press. I don't think I've had that one. Those are the three cigars that I like to work on. I like the HVC La Rosa as well, but that shit isn't on the regular, so.

Oh. That's who we need to get on the show. Lorenzo? Lorenzo.

He's a translator. He's got a voice for radio, though. You need a fuck... I think it's his birthday.

Today or tomorrow or something. Is it really? It's coming up, yeah. Oh, we should have him on for a birthday show.

Actually, I think he's up north. I saw he's doing an event somewhere else. So, happy birthday, Lorenzo. Happy birthday, Lorenzo.

I'm sure he's one of our five listeners. No, he's not. I'm sure he is. I think...

So, where are you going to be this upcoming week, Michael, let's do that and then we'll get off this whole circus. This weekend, on the 1st, I will be at Cutters in Brandon. We're doing a cut and light for Caffee 1901 and it's also the Florida Cigar Club holiday party. And then on the 2nd, I will be at the, what's it called, the Cigar Heritage Festival in Ybor.

Sweet! Yes, and then you're going somewhere very soon. December 7th, I'm going to be in New York at Mom's Cigar Warehouse. What day is the 7th?

Is that on Thursday? Thursday? Thursday. I think it's Scars.

We've got to work that out because you're coming back Tuesday. Something around there. Can I grab you at the airport when we head south? Oh, yeah.

We've got to work that out. We've got to work that out. I've got to drop that out. Johan.

Johan. We call him Johan. Johan. And then on the 15th, Johan and I will be on Kiss My Ass Radio.

We just confirmed that this morning. So you're going to listen to us on Kiss My Ass Radio. That's my ass radio. I'm his translator for the show.

That's cool. Hopefully he doesn't get nervous. Dude, I wasn't done saying where I'm going to be. I'm sorry, I thought you were done.

No, on the 8th, I'm going to be in Philadelphia with my boy Vince Hill, B&B. Where are you going to be smoking with John? With Johan? John.

John Jurgalette. Oh. You know, I think last time I said Whippany. Yeah, he told me he said it wrong.

It's Paramus. We chat like daily now. I'm going to be at JR's. He's my new BFF.

I'm going to be at JR's and Paramus. JR's and Paramus. JR's and Paramus. Paramus.

Yeah, yeah. Paramus. I know you can do that little thing for me. Yeah.

I should kick your ass for that. We haven't done it yet. Yeah, but I don't like how you... What happens is you go to these shops.

Since you bring that up, we'll go ahead and talk to you about this. You go to these shops and you see how shitty these people treat everybody else. And now you're starting to act that way. Oh, no.

That's not cool. You can't fucking... No. This is the fucking anomaly.

We don't fucking... We don't talk about people like that here, sir. We don't make... Oh, lighten up.

That was funny. We don't make those comments. That was funny. It was not funny.

Believe me, I appreciate all the advice in the sounding board that you and Greg provide. Sure. I'm not allowed to make any new decisions unless I check here first. Because apparently I don't make the right ones.

Well, that's good. I'm glad that, you know, that you learned that. So we can go from here. That's all that matters.

Just start from here. Start from 2019. And that's, uh, that's it. Um, but then, oh, okay.

Go ahead. No, wait, if you leave the 7th, we're gonna have to do another show, like, next week. Like, early in the week. Or later this week.

Oh, yeah, it's only Tuesday. It's Tuesday. Yeah. Yeah, my dad's got a procedure on Thursday, so I'll be in town all week.

Oh, we got Big Jack Friday! Yeah. What time is he showing up? I don't know.

Because my wife's birthday is Thursday. But we can't go out because of my dad's procedure, so I'm going to have to go on Friday. But she has a basketball game. That's not my fucking problem.

Hey, hey, you relax over there. I am relaxed. You are, basically. You're almost asleep in the chair.

The microphone's going to fall and hit you in the face. It's going to be a... Oh, that sounded good. Alright.

I feel like we really talked about nothing. This is like our new style. This is our new style. But we talked about.

We talked about some shit. This is our new thing. Shots fired. Shots fired.

Shots fired. Cross the bow, fire warning shot. We grow up fast, we roll up slow. That's all you got from me today.

So you're leaving? I'm outta here. You're out. Alright guys, thanks for listening.

We appreciate all the support. Please send your cards and letters and care of Cigar Hustler. Oh, here's my phone. 829 Deltona Boulevard.

Oh, see, now you're on your phone. Ooh. Yeah, I got some nice pictures. Oh.

Of who? My boys. Oh, they're so cute. Yeah, they are.

All right. Goodbye. All right, guys. Bye.

This is the operator with a collect ball from Emerald Cells. To accept the charges, press one now. Alright folks, that's it. Show's over.
