Undercrown was born inside the Drew Estate factory itself — the torcedores were smoking so many Liga Privadas that they were told to stop depleting the inventory, so they blended a cigar of their own from many of the same tobaccos, which Jonathan Drew christened an "inverse Liga Privada." The line debuted in 2011. The Coronet is the 4 x 32 mixed-filler tin format Drew Estate announced at the 2017 IPCPR trade show, when the company put a small-format version of virtually every brand in its portfolio into tins of 10; the Undercrown Coronets were in the first wave, shipping in August 2017. Tin count: 10 cigars, packed in sleeves of 50.
A dark Mexican San Andrés Otapan Negro Último Corte wrapper over a Connecticut River Valley stalk-cut and stalk-cured Habano binder — the same leaf used on Liga Privada T52 — with Brazilian Mata Fina and Nicaraguan tobaccos inside. Unlike the hand-rolled Undercrown core line, the Coronet is a machine-made, mixed-filler cigar made in Nicaragua. Coronet format, 4 x 32. Tin count: 10 cigars.
Opens rich, sweet and smooth, the smoke thick and creamy in the mouth with a mild-to-medium spice heat that builds steadily. The second half turns big and meaty, with pepper spice and a mesquite smokiness held in balance by just enough natural sweetness, and it pumps out smoke in typical Drew Estate fashion. Full, rich, spicy and satisfying — it does not smoke like a mixed-filler cigar.
A short smoke of roughly 40 minutes — one to keep around for an afternoon break or any day when smoking time is limited.
